I'm an operator, but I fab and weld too. When I was a boy, my dad thought me to weld a cross hatch pattern so the mud and clay would stick to the surface. This adds more wear protection to the steel. You end up with 7-8mm thick weld beads and the clay is the same thickness. I do no smaller than about 50mm square/diamond/circles.

The material around the drum of our Wirtgen pulverizers have hilarious hard faced hieroglyphics from the shop guys in the winter. Some day a guy in a scrap yard will cut the machine up and have a good laugh

Who’s out here stealing buckets? I believe in hardfacing, but I’ve got my doubts about bucket thieves. Can you imagine the amount of work and equipment needed to steal one of these?

I hard face no other way. Each company gets a different look, I.d'd. And unit numbered. Even the company name gets slapped on there by stick weld.
