The New Face of Trucking - Trucking is constantly evolving and changing, much like any other business. But, there's one highly notable thing about the changes in trucking that have taken place over the past 20 years or so...... that is that few to none of these changes have benefited the truck driver. In this video, Dave gives an overview of how trucking has changed in the past 50 years or so, into what it is today.

Good day Drivers. Thank you for taking the time to catch today's upload. How do you feel about the new face of trucking? Do you feel that the changes over the last few decades have benefited the driver in any way? Are you contented staying with your truck driving job until truck drivers are no longer needed? Love to hear your thoughts.

Sir, I am not a truck driver , never will be. But you guys are so respected by me! You're the best drivers on the road, you get it done , backing up these big trucks , in these small spots and you get it done. God bless all of you and stay safe.

I drove for 8 yrs . The last job I had video taped me all day with audio . I felt very uneasy about it . Along with the stress , long hours , traffic, and all the other bs I decided to do something else. I started my own landscaping company and my very first week in business I made more money than when I was trucking and in about less than half the time . I wouldn't recommend trucking to anyone looking to get into it . There's way too much bs for what the job pays .

I'm a retired teamster. Drove for 31 years, and retired at the age of 54 in 2001, with a nice pension that pays me to this day. My point about the changes is that with the influx of immigrant drivers you cannot trust the driver in any truck. It's gotten very dangerous to even be on the interstate with these driver school graduates.

Well said Dave, 100% the truth. its a sad state of affairs the way the industry has turned into. I ask myself every week why did us drivers just sit back and let this happen??? The ATA is not your friend. The trucking industry in some part did this to themselves, companies should of offered more in house training and mentoring to produce better qualified safe drivers out on the road and where is the incentive to attract new drivers that want to work to replace retiring drivers....oh and BTW the old truck still has a great shine on it not bad for a 17 year old truck

I started in 82 being mentored by my buddy's parents ( a husband and wife team). He taught 4 of us to drive and the etiquette of the road. We worked hard kept our trucks and ourselves clean and respectful. Never drove past a drive in need without lending a hand. We made a good living for quite a while but things started to change. Drivers lost respect for everyone and themselves. Trashed everything they came in contact with and made a mockery out of a once proud and respected industry. Can't find parking anywhere. No good places to eat and shower. Always felt unsafe from the 2000's on till now. I'm glad I got out around 2010 and finished my working life doing something else. Thought I would never see what has happened to our industry but Pop ( my mentor) warned us what was coming. Damn was he right.

I started driving in 1978 and spent a lot of time learning the ropes. I ran grain locally for a few years then went out over the road and eventually became an owner/operator. I loved my job and the people too. The other drivers were my family away from home and we enjoyed a brotherhood that will never be duplicated. I eventually went back to being a company driver which does have some advantages. I've been out here now for 44 years and I've seen a lot of change. Some of it good, but most of it not so much. I've got three years left until I retire and I cannot wait to pull the parking brake button for the last time. I already miss trucking the way it used to be, but I won't miss this mess we have now. Thanks for the great videos.

Couldn't agree more with everything you just said . I've been in the seat 20 years now and I've seen so much change , not for the better I might add . It's really sad to see what was once a great thing slowly going to the wayside and the lack of respect on the road....... Love the videos, keep the shiny side up and the pedal down.

I still love being an owner operator but, unlike 10 or 20 years ago, I'm looking forward to retirement. In January 2024, my 2006 Classic XL will be sent off to be converted into the biggest, baddest motorhome on the road. My wife and I will be in our mid 50s so, hopefully, we'll still have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves.

One problem has been the influx of foreign drivers. They bring their driving habits with them, much as I would if I moved to a foreign country. Social issues also come into play, affecting, sometimes, the way a driver may act in certain situations. I drive hazmat loads nowadays, but a long ...long time ago I was in EMS in Southern California, and have seen things I wish I hadn't. It affects the way I operate, clean, courteous, and try to be safe on the road. I don't ever want to be responsible for the loss of anybody's loved ones.

Railroads pay FAR better than trucking does and driving a truck is more laborious than operating a locomotive. Plus you're home every other day in railroading. Too much micro managing and too much safety nonsense is why trucking industry is short of drivers as well as the lousy pay. Trucking companies furnish small sleeper, low governed trucks, and expect drivers to be content and to be on time with slow governed trucks. Ridiculous!

I've been driving for 6 years now and I'm sick of it. My current company pays well but I feel like a kid at day care. They have cameras, lane assist warnings, automatic braking, and alarms when any of those things activate. I immediately disconnected everything I could get away with. The only thing left is the camera and thats all I'm willing to drive with. I don't understand why companies will hire people if they don't trust us to do the job. It just pushes the good drivers into other careers

A unified trucker's union needs to be formed so that we can stop all of the bs that's going on within the DOT, FMCSA, and whoever else has a hand in the regression of this much-needed profession. After all, truckers make the world go round. Without truckers, the planet would just simply stop moving.

I have solution to the trucking industry. Trucking companies should not be publicly traded companies. The shareholders are more important than the drivers according to companies. A sole proprietor truck driver should be exempt from paying taxes. An owner operator earns a living from his own labor. He should be exempt!

I agree to a point. First off, the LORD is to thank for everything one has. Pay can mean more than just money, such as paid time off (food delivery companies typically give 3 weeks PTO, why not OTR too?) paid holidays, meal allowance (the actual reason per diem was invented), hotel stays if a driver is ill, and parking. Nice to here from you Dave and remember your neighbors out on the open road!

Well, lots of that is true. One of the biggest problems is that the traditional old time drivers (the ones who are still around) don’t like any drivers who aren’t like them…you can hear it on the CB, when they were used a lot. Also, you can read it all over the bathroom stalls, which is a reflection of what they think of others who are unlike them! Those older drivers are a reflection of where they come from, and mostly because of how they treat others is one of the big problems why younger ppl don’t like older drivers. Maybe like the rebel flags on the grill…the older racist drivers will disappear, but don’t count on it happening soon! The base dies hard and slowly!

People are delusional trying to organize strikes or shutdowns, like he said the only hope we had to send a message died along with Hoffa. If he was still around there wouldn’t be a single threat of shutdowns, they would have happened, only Hoffa had the power to shut trucks down, he could send the message and get us anything we want. Only Hoffa could shut the trucks down, these days they can’t get 20 trucks to show up. Hoffa was absolutely the gatekeeper to the entire industry

Low wages, Rivalry, and creature comforts that equal being baby sat by the powers that be. I spell it out because of the now returned lower rates. Over capacity, and general silence about the regulations and technology being proposed by the ATA and FMCSA. The attitude of me first and a little is better than nothing has become king. Capitalism requires businesses to constantly increase profits. That comes at workers' expense. Karl Marx explained this almost 200 years ago. This is just the impact of capitalism on one industry. (That's the short story. The long story is that the big trucking companies hired lobbyists to bribe Congress members to pass laws that let them screw drivers, and the smaller companies had to do the same to compete. But it was all to grow profits.)

Third world immigrants, with a third world country driving mindset. Don't follow the rules of the road, courtesy to others, etc. You can look at the equipment . New, but not in good shape, or taken care of by the driver's, or the company they work for. FMCSA, and the D.O.T., putting themselves out of work, and into early retirement. Just by targeting the smaller companies, and letting the bigger companies slide. The new technologies, self-driving trucks, automated systems, etc are going to reduce their numbers too. They will also be victims of lies . I've seen it in other industries.

I agree Dave, rarely does something come out that benefits me, as a tank truck driver. I run tanker in the Alberta oil patch. In the last 5 years I now have 3 Apps on my phone that I MUST use every single load. Before I load I have to go into all 3 apps, punch in all the info they want, after I'm loaded, same thing, go into all 3 apps. 7 hours later when I get to where I unload, go into all 3 Apps again, after unloading, yup, you guessed it, go into those Apps again. All of this has added 2 hours on to my day. The company loves it because they were able to get rid of 2 office jobs, passing their work unto us, the drivers.

I remember being taught that you ALWAYS give the trucker a break when he needs to turn or is merging, and that value just isn't there today.....although I still let the big rigs have right of way. I have always loved driving and being on the open road, and I thought that could be the seed of a career in trucking - - BUT - - every time I have taken a serious look at it (at least a half-dozen times over the years) it always came down to the same thing: TOO MANY SACRIFICES you have to make in exchange for FAR TOO SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY. Yes, I know there are some "good" i.e.- good paying, "cushy" drop-and-hook jobs within the industry, but a lot of that comes down to "who-you-know" ~ OR ~ being in the 'right-place-at-the-right-time' and I just didn't have those connections. Best of luck to all of you out there!

We got through the late hours on the road with the c.b. radio while reading every newspaper of the regions we traveled through. It's not dead. (trucking industry)It's changed. Embrace the challenges to make the industry better. I'm an optimist. 10-4

2 more weeks and then I get to start pulling trucks into the shop to get the ELDs set up for the January first deadline. The new manager asked me which units need them installed, I told her everything newer than 2000 that requires a log book. She had to put a rush order in for some more units LOL I told her she was going to need to hire some more drivers too.
