Former Boeing Everett... I was there when we were putting GE90's on our Triple Sevens... ginormous engine that would not fit inside an average home...

They developed it for 12 years and it is not yet delivered to any airline. Sounds expensive, it better be really good.

... so says the layman, over drinks.. When a company such as Boeing pushes things along, driven by accountants, profits, racing for market dominance, etc., corners are cut, planes crash, people die. All in good time, my friend. All in good time. 🤝 🍻

@@alicelund147 certification takes a long time now. especially for boeing, cuz the faa is right on their tail after the 737 max crashes and poor quality control. it could’ve been delivered to airlines in late 2020 but there were delays, and problems with the engines that ge provided due to a component in the engine.

People have no concept of the complexity of these engines. Not only the actual design but putting the design into action. The number of internal components is mind boggling and each one has to operate under enormous heat and pressure for thousands of hours, perfectly. Often, new materials are developed that can withstand the heat and pressure and other manufacturers are used to provide these parts on time and perfect. This takes time, lots of time.

These engines are just ridiculous. It amazes me how man kind created these. The amount of power is astounding, almost unreal.

I don't understand how this engine makes sense for the 8x/9x? It produces less thrust than the 115B.
@user-yt198
@user-yt198 5 ай бұрын
Magic is in the 777X wings. Composite, high aspect ratio wings create less drag, so engines can have less thrust. GE90 with less thrust can have higher by-pass ratio fans which now becomes GE9X, with better efficiency. Larger wing area also means better lift which allows more aircraft weight, which in turn translates to longer fuselage and more seats. 777 becomes 777X.

@@user-yt198 “On November 10, 2017, a GE9X engine reached a record thrust of 134,300 lbf (597 kN) in Peebles, a new Guinness World Record breaking the GE90-115B 127,900 lbf (569 kN) record set in 2002.[15][16] The block test engine ran at its operational limits, at triple red-line conditions: maximum fan speed, maximum core speed, and maximum exhaust gas temperature. Icing tests started in Winnipeg at the end of 2017. The initial 777X flight-test engines were shipped in 2018 for an initial 777-9 flight in early 2019.[17] A quarter of the certification testing was done by May 2018: icing, crosswind/inlet distortion, inlet distortion , fan and booster blade vibrations, HP turbine blade vibrations and thermal survey.[13]” -Wikipedia. You can also see that the GE9X surpassed the GE90 and broke its record on GE Aviation’s KZbin page too. It generated 134,300lbs of thrust, surpassing the GE90-115B’s 127,900lbs of thrust. The GE9X’s might be set lower to 105,000lbs of thrust on the 777x for efficiency purposes though I’m not sure if Boeing did it.

Years late, lots of problems and nothing yet delivered. Meanwhile RR and Airbus can’t make A350s fast enough. GE advantage if it ever happens could be overtaken by the RR ultra fan.
@_.twixxx
@_.twixxx 4 ай бұрын
ultrafan might take the advantage once it’s completed and tested, but what manufacturer will put it on a plane? i mean boeing could put it on the 777x, but i don’t think airbus will be able to put it on the a350.
@artrandy

@@_.twixxx The UltraFan is a test bed only, with new tech already transferring from it to the Trents. News is however, that 2 other testbed UFs are being developed, both of different and smaller sizes, as this engine is scaleable. What could RR possibly want with a smaller version??🙂🙂..........
@_.twixxx
@_.twixxx 4 ай бұрын
@@artrandy maybe an a350 or a380 neo, but i was referring to the original size of the ultrafan due to how massive it was. that original engine could definitely fit in the 777x, but not the a350.
@artrandy
@artrandy 4 ай бұрын
@@_.twixxx You're missing the point entirely. UltraFan is a test bed only, (how can I make this point more clear😀😀?) RR have no ambition for UltraFan to power a commercial airliner in passenger service. Neither an A380 nor an A350. However, developments from UltraFan could develop into a new engine, which presumably is why its being scaled down. Think narrow bodies, buddy..............
@_.twixxx
@_.twixxx 4 ай бұрын
@@artrandy well i did do an educated guess. didn’t think narrowbodies tho. smaller and more improved new engines that rr could or definitely will make could definitely hit in the a320 neo family market or boeing’s 797, which should be the 757’s replacement i presume, or boeings new 737 replacement.
