Hi Mark, Squint/Rob here. Thanks for a brilliant review. I agree with you entirely. Gillette has tested the water and found it to be very nice a warm. They weren't going to jump into the shark infested deep end by producing a razor that would potentially put off a new generation of wet shavers. We vintage razor enthusiasts accept that we will occasionally self-inflict ourselves with a few nicks, weepers and cuts because we know the score when it comes to shaving with a DE. Newcomers to proper wet shaving want a product that will give them a good close shave akin to the cartridge razors that they have always used. The last thing we would want is for a new generation of shavers to be put off on their first attempt by being left with blood on their faces and egg on the face of Gillette. Let's give Gillette some credit, folks. They have listened to our moans and groans and done something about it. I hope that by this time next year, we will all be discussing another new Gillette DE razor.
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
Hey Squint/Rob 😃 I think a newcomer would find this very appealing: the price point is good, it's very nicely presented and it's a really nice shave. I imagine a newcomer wouldn't give two stuffs where the head was made - it's probably only shaving nerds that discuss such things. Next year, I fully expect their to be a heritage Gillette Toggle - are you reading this Gillette? Hello... 😉

I'm intrigued that Gillette seems to have seen the resurgence of safety razors in recent years and is now catering to rising demand. I'm really curious to try one of these to see how it compares with my Merkur 34c Heavy Duty. I also understand why the company would outsource the head-cost saving until it can catch up and open a plant in the U.S., which it should absolutely do if sales take off. I know Gillette isn't well liked in shaving circles for its business practices, but it's still the granddaddy of razors and that it's returning to its roots after decades is something that should be encouraged.
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
It is very interesting especially as they recently produced a shaving cream as well. It really seems as if someone at Gillette is paying quite close attention to the traditional enthusiasts. I think it's quite amazing that a group of guys who've got ourselves together in groups and forums can have some little influence, I know there maybe other reasons too, over a huge company. It'll be interesting to follow this.

Great review Mark, is the razor more aggressive than an EJ DE89?
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I was never very impressed with my Mühle R89 - it was a nice enough shave but always a touch too mild. At the time, a subscriber was getting a touch of razor burn from his R106, which I couldn't understand, as it has the same head. When I tested the razor, it was an entirely different, and better experience; definitely more effective. I even wrote to Mühle, to verify it was exactly the same head! The only difference was the heavier handle. To me, the Gillette Heritage feels just like that. I find it more effective. I've just had a brilliant shave with it! 😃

Great shave, Mark. When I first heard the Heritage head was made in Germany, my first thought was wondering if it was maybe a Merkur or Muhle. I finally received my Gillette Heritage on 11/18 and have shaved with it twice. The first shave gave me some irritation which was 100% my fault. I was having such fun that I over shaved. The 2nd shave (Gillette Silver Blue) was perfect, comfortable and no irritation. I love this razor!! Like you, it doesn't bother me that they outsourced the head. I view it as Gillette's way of testing the DE market for possible future releases. It would be nice if they decided to release a "Heritage Series" to include the Fat Boy and Slim Adjustable. I'd use my kid's inheritance to buy them!! The only disappointment for me about this razor is that the Gillette name/logo was not somewhere on the razor head. I just bought a vintage cased Gillette English Flat Bottom Tech (fat handle). Looks to be in great condition. Cant's wait to receive and use it. Have a great and safe weekend, my friend!
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
It is a great razor; I'm so glad you're enjoying yours. I did laugh when you said you'd spend the kid's inheritance 😅 Gillette might not have the machinery anymore to stamp a metal razor. Hey, like the sound of the flat bottomed Tech, they're meant to be very good and pretty rare, too. Nice one. I have a couple of old Gillettes on my wish list for next year. I'm currently on the lookout for a US army, old type to complete my khaki set. It'll be a miracle if I find one of those. Take care, Claude. Be well.

Yes, I do get the “Arkwright’s Till” reference. One of my all-time favourite comedies starring Ronnie Barker and David Jason who of course went on to star in “A Touch Of Frost”, another favourite of mine. As to the Gillette Heritage, I have only used it once so far, but was amazed at how close and comfortable the shave was. I used it with a Wilkinson Sword blade, first time use. Perhaps not everyone will agree, but this might be my current “go to” razor.
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
I like the German Wilkinson Sword blades and I'll bet they match up very well with the Heritage. I don't know if I'm imagining this, but it feels like they are a fraction thicker than some other blades. Either way, they work well for me. 🙂 I'm glad you got the Open All Hours reference. @@FriendshipShaving Thanks, Mark. I do like it very much! Had a couple shaves with it and it's a very smooth and surprisingly efficient shaver. A pleasant surprise how good this razor is. What a bargain! I don't understand all the controversy about this razor. People complained forever Gillette abandoned the safety razor market and when they offer one, it's not good enough. It's a good first step. I tend not to read forums where there is a lot of negativity or conspiracy theories, however, I did read about this Gillette Heritage. I found it a little odd. I stayed silent on the issue. I find trying to convince people on the internet a losing proposition. To each their own. In all of the investigative posts and reviews there's a lot of conjecture of what this razor is made of. Surely the head is zamak, like a Muhle. That doesn't bother me. What's often missed is there are seven grades of zamak, and zamak 2 is very durable. The surprising thing is that no one I've read has tried to check the handle with a magnet. The handle is ferrous! I suspect stainless steel, as all SS has iron content. Some grades more than others. I do understand why some are disappointed with the toxic masculinity advert. I really hated it myself and considered never buying Gillette products again. The thing is, I've been in manufacturing for many decades and I've seen layoffs and plant closings. Boycotting a company for a PR failure only hurts the rank and file employees. The big money makers at P&G and Gillette won't suffer at all. People working 40+ hours a week to stay 30 days ahead of the bill collectors will suffer. All the best!

@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
They are similar. Initially, Edwin Jagger and Mühle developed and produced the DE89 and the R89 respectively, in partnership as the manufacturing machinery was very expensive. Now they both have their own manufacturing process but Edwin Jagger has made changes to the design; they use a brass centre post which should make the head slightly heavier and affect the shave. I don't care what critics of this razor say or think. It looks good. It works well and it is the "Real Thing"= Authentic Product of Gillette, regardless where it was made, and people should accept it as such. If they don't like it; don't buy it. If they think it's nothing but a renamed preexisting razor; don't buy it. Gillette is part of a Giant Corporate Conglomerate that sells diverse products; if people keep that in mind and stop being nostalgic and emotional and projecting a romantic view of the Gillette of the Past onto present day products; they'd be much better off. Besides, who knows, the Gillette of the Past may not be the warm and fuzzy corporate entity some people think of it as. I've read content by FOOLS complaining that head is made of Zamak as if this makes a difference. Unless those people are metallurgists and the type of metal is somehow critical in the item's usage then A- they don't even know what this actually means in any practical sense. And B- since they don't know what they are talking they should just STFU and find something that is genuinely broken, misrepresented or an out and out scam to complain about. A good majority of wet shavers are as ignorant as they are intolerant. Too often they express opinions as facts or ignore verifiable facts(there is a lot of this going on in the world today!) and this why you'll never find me as a member in ANY wet shaving forums. I think people should just appreciate this "Limited Edition" razor and leave it at that. Maybe there will be another. Maybe not and it seems as if some are practically demanding a reproduction of This or That, before the Heritage Razor gets wet for the first time so to speak,. In their passion and enthusiasm they come across as entitled and spoiled and this helps no one.
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
Now, Keith - don't hold back mate. 😃 I'm just going to pick up on one point: I've found that I quite like a head made of zinc alloy. Using the Heritage as an example, the weight and balance is pretty perfect for me and, of course, it's cheaper to manufacture than brass, hence the very reasonable prices of most zinc alloy razors. I have read that the centre post, in the head cap, may be likely to break, if you drop a zinc alloy razor but, in all honestly I don't think I've ever dropped a safer razor, so I don't feel it's an issue at all. Interestingly, Edwin Jagger now put a brass centre post in their DE89, I've come to realise, over the last year or so of trying many very nice razors that an awful lot of stainless steel razors, as nice as they may be, are too heavy for me. I prefer a lighter more manoeuvrable razor. One things for sure, we are blessed with choice and that can only be good for everyone - whatever their preference. For myself, this new Heritage is a wonder razor and well worth the wait. Cheers.

Try corking the blade, but only once and notice the difference. Should eliminate bumps etc.

Just a hair more blade feel from my jagger 89 than on my gillette heritage so I would say they are not the exact same head
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
The information from Gillette is that head is made in Germany, so logic dictates that it isn't made by Edwin Jagger but Mühle, unless you know differently. It may be that in changing some of the elements of the DE89, for example: it has a brass central post and therefore the head is heavier than it used to be when the post was zinc alloy, that the Edwin Jagger DE89 head, does shave differently to the Mühle head.

Great video and super helpful as per usually. It's nice to see Gillette making DE razors again. But disappointing to see that its mostly an Edwin Jagger DE89/R89, and I feel it's lazy on Gillette's part, considering their history of manufacturing DE razors. Hopefully sales will be good and this will make Gillette release more DE razors. But please Gillette use your own design. It would be great to see Gillette remanufacture the Fatboy or the Slim Adjustable. Hope you feel better soon Mark.

I can understand that some fellows are disappointed. It would be nice to see another Gillette production razor - I'd vote for a new Super Adjustable 84 (I'd love a vintage one too) and a Gillette Toggle in nickel plate. Phwoar! Fingers crossed we will see more from Gillette. 👍

Great shave mate...I bought a couple on the Amazon US site. One to use and one to keep. I ordered it late on the 20th US time and it is already in the country as of the afternoon of the 22nd AU time. I guess they have sufficient stock now LOL. Yeah it has the Muhle style head but hey...at least they decided to acknowledge their past eh? I doubt they'll ever see the economics of making DEs themselves again but maybe they can get someone to create authentic style olds and news. hehehe...I know the 'Open All Hours reference well...I loved that snatchy cash register LOL. It was a mean as he was LOL

Hey Marc. I hope you're doing well. I wish I'd bought two now 🙂 It will be interesting to see how Gillette progress from here as I'm sure the sales of this razor are pretty good. I wonder how many guys are being tempted away from cartridge razors with this offering. Yes, the Open All Hours reference has been recognised. My work is done! Take care mate.

Mine is on it's way from America as I watch. I am glad that Gillette bothered at all to do this, they can't corner the market in blade sales for it so it's no surprise that they didn't pour money into designing a bespoke unit. Outsourcing is in every market and it makes economical sense to use someones established facilities or parts. At least they bothered to keep their standards and produce a wonderful case and decent handle for it. That has always bothered me with other razors is it coming in rubbish cases or just simple boxes. I understand that it would cost a small fortune to reproduce one of their TTO adjustable razors and if I'm honest I wouldn't want them to. I'd rather see a bespoke TTO if they're going to bother, perhaps something like the flare tip. I'm curious though if they bothered to advertise this at all though, I only stumbled across it cos I watch these types of videos otherwise I would have missed it altogether. Hopefully it does sell well enough.

I'm totally with you, on this. Whatever prompted them to do this, I'm really glad they did! 😃 The case is really nice and it's really made this razor stand out from the crowd, particularly in it's price range. Yeah, I don't understand the lack of advertising. I found out through the group - I didn't believe it, at first! It's strange because it wouldn't really have cost anything to advertise on their own website, at least. Very odd.
@buddhamack14915 жыл бұрын
@@FriendshipShaving Perhaps that is part of what kept the cost down or part of the experiment. They are likely aware that the wet shaving community keeps tabs on things and actively shares their knowledge. If they make money off this the next step might be trialing it with those not already into wet shaving by actively advertising it.

its a rebranded EJ89

It's made in Germany though, not Sheffield but that aside, I think everyone is fully aware that it is a rebranded razor.

Is the average life of a DE blade one week? So I can change out a blade each week for a better shave? They (Gillete) let the other razor manufacturers duke it out and then reaped the rewards of choosing a popular razor head. Wish the Futur razor makers would add knurling to their razor handle!
@FriendshipShaving4 жыл бұрын
The life of the blade seems to depend on a few things; brand or type of blade coating but also how coarse a fellows stubble is affects the blade. I seem to get a good five or six shaves before I feel the need to change, some only get a couple of shaves. I agree about the Futur knurling!

Just buy a Edwin jagger razor. It’s the same head
@FriendshipShaving4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for enlightening me, Michael but I wanted this razor rather than an Edwin Jagger or Mühle razor. I do explain in the video about the head. The EJ head is slightly different as it has a brass screw which makes the overall weight of the head slightly heavier than it's Mühle counterpart, which is the head on this razor. Cheers.

Edwin Jagger DE89 knockoff, an opportunity missed for Gillette to shine in a new era... very unfortunate thing.
@FriendshipShaving5 жыл бұрын
I understand why you would think that. At the moment, Gillette are all set up to make plastic cartridge razors, so this razor doesn't surprise me. I think we'll see more from Gillette. I hope so.
