I'll never forget reading comments by New Girl viewers that said things like it seemed unfair that Winston would have to compete and be overshadowed by Coach because they truly couldn't understand how two black men could both be on the same show. But as far as "generic" sitcoms based on non-familial units such as New Girl, it's definitely uncommon.

I’m not even going to pretend like I wasn’t worried they’d boot Winston off the show. Or slowly try to ease him out. Stupid ass question to ask on the carpet though. It’s not really talked about, but New Girl having three black/brown main characters and three white ones was major to me. They kind of under played Winston’s storyline a bit (which was very frustrating) but still I’ll give the show credit for having him there and keeping all six until the end of the show.

To be fair, of the four roommates, Winston was by far the least developed character on the show and was largely used for comic relief as opposed to actual dramatic content. Later in the series he gets more real attention, though. But I think beyond the racial implication, if you assume that the reintroduction of Coach will result in the resignation of a different character (not a necessary assumption, but let's roll with it), then the character of Winston would be the one to replace just due to the fact that he did not serve a significant dramatic role up to that point in the series. Now why was Winston disserviced early on in the series? I don't think it would be out of the question to explore the idea that maybe his character was mainly introduced for the sake of racial diversity. Not that I think the black character should be relegated simply to that role, but perhaps that's what the writers or producers were thinking. And if we follow that line of thought, then introduction of another black character would again suggest that the character of Winston is no longer as valuable and would be the character to be cut if any character needed cut. And therefore the inquisition of people about whether or not the Winston character would be leaving is not due to the prejudices of the interviewers, but rather by their acknowledgement of the existence of this prejudice in the industry. They are not asking it because they want it to be true, but simply because it is a question that sadly needed to be asked.

Idk, Winston was brought on the show to replace Coach leaving. I think this is why there were a lot of people asking what happens to Winston if Coach came back. I'm not sure that has anything to with race, but casting choices and concerns. I was actually annoyed Coach came back and I didn't like his character. It also felt like Damon only came back because New Girl was a hit and that made me sour about his character.

The problem wasn't two black guys. It was that the characters were all the same, so it just got sloppy. Coach should have been written as more of a foil since he was clearly supposed to be a guy who was disciplined and athletic. Yet. He always came off as just as nutty, insecure, childish, and undisciplined as everyone else. He needed better writing and direction, which seemed to seriously falter in the final seasons. Since they wouldn't do that, they just sent him to new york to get rid of him.

I mean they really just switched coach out with winston after the first episode... The show lost coach's character after the pilot and just swapped him out with a different black guy... safe to say the execs at fox felt the same way as fans about the show having enough for 1 black guy.

pretty sure they had lamorne picked out as coach beforehand but he was like filming another pilot for another show and so they picked damon which coincidentally also had another show he had to get back to after the pilot of new girl. The other show that lamorne was on wasnt renewed so they got him back on new girl as a different character after coach was already introduced. i dont see how its a problem that we make fun of people who ask stupid questions like those though

The character of Winston was literally created when Coach couldn't commit after the pilot. The show itself setup those questions by swapping a black actor with another. I'm not sure why they are more mad at fans for assuming a returning Coach would mean that the guy who replaced him would be the one to leave than the show for doing that in the first place.

But the fact is Winston would not exist if Coach stayed after the pilot. The writers literally write him in to replace Coach and of course they didn’t make him an exact clone character.
