As a ky boy that bleeds blue and loves uk basketball more than most love their children, this is really a tough pill to swallow. Cal is bringing in these 5 star recruits that don't give a damn about ky basketball, don't give a damn about BBN, don't give a damn about college period. They have dreamed of the NBA since grade school and are just worried about those stats and where they're at in the draft prospects rankings. We had the fiddlin five, the fabulous five, the untouchables, the comback cats. Rupps runts and the unforgettables didn't even win titles and they still get remembered. Cal is using the university of Kentucky like his personal whore and we're all getting screwed.

I remember a few years ago when he said his #1 job is to make sure the players he recruits are ready for the NBA. That's absurd. With his ability to recruit, UK basketball should be winning titles like Bama does in football.

​@@christenn32 Well said. From 2016 - 2019, UK fans like myself saw Calipari morph from a hardworking coach into a new entity known as Swaggy Cal. Swaggy Cal thinks he can rule the court on the strength of his recruiting plus his Savoir-faire. He doesn't realize that the freshmen he recruits have just finished high school and still have a lot to learn. Swaggy Cal has a responsibility to teach these kids all the fundamentals such as how to play defense and play thru screens. Swaggy Cal thinks all he has to do is recruit a freshmen class that ranks in the top 5 or better. Afterwards, all he has to do is turn them loose on the court and let them play street ball (those are Cal's words not mine). When UK went thru that dreadful stretch in late Feb-early March of this year where they won 6 games and lost 6 games (including several home loses), I knew we were in TROUBLE. Although the team and all the players had moments where their individual Defense looked good, there were more moments where the defense looked awful. Due to lapses in team discipline, there were moments where even the best UK players looked detached. A player might make an incredible block. On the very next series, the same player would look as if he had fallen asleep for a moment and would allow the guy he should have been defending to be wide open. There were also lapses on offense where players looked uninvolved and this would lead to turnovers. Does next year have to end with another 1st round NCAA Tourney loss? Probably, but not necessarily. If somehow UK can get old Cal back and get rid of Swaggy Cal they might go as far as the Elite Eight next year. Maybe a Final Four. However, this means: 1) Cal needs to change his attitude and his coaching philosophy. If he can't get his head around the "Transfer Portal", perhaps he needs to find an assistant who can or perhaps he should make up with Coach Stoops (instead of antagonizing him), who could teach him a few things about the Portal. 2) Cal needs to bring some discipline to the team and stop turning his super-freshmen loose. UK needs a coach not someone who just wants to let his team play street ball. There are no coaches in "Street Ball". Why are we paying $30 million dollars for a coach, who doesn't coach during the game? 3) Cal needs to start teaching. Yes, he recruits super-freshmen, but they came from high school. They are in college now and need some college courses in Basketball Fundamentals. If he getting forgetful in his old-age, he needs to hire an assistant and let him be the teacher. 4) Cal needs to start acting like a coach. We need a coach who knows how to play chess. When an opposing team introduces a new offense or a new defense that causes problems for his players, we need a coach who understands the basics and knows how to make the necessary tweaks and adjustments. The next time the Wildcat Defense makes last year's Division 2 player look like the 2nd Coming of Pistol Pete, we need a coach who knows how to make adjustments to his defense. Even freshmen should know how to play through a screen. If they are having issues, it should be corrected at halftime. 5) We need a coach who knows the "Coaching Fundamentals". First on the list of Coaching Fundamentals is: "Defense, not Offense, Wins Championships". The one thing that bothered me the most about Calipari this year was when he tried to sell the media and the fans that this team would go far in March because "this is the best scoring team I've ever had." While he was probably right, what he failed to mention was "this was the worst defensive team he had ever had." Even the best offense, will have cold spells. It happens to them all. The only way to marginalize these cold spells is to have a good defense. When you play 12 games and only win 6 of them, you shouldn't be telling your fans that this team will go far in March. Most of the fans didn't believe it, nor did the players. They did not go into the NCAA Tournament feeling confident. Next year, if this team finds itself in the NCAA Tournament, it will be scared shitless going into that first game because Cal's job will be on the line.

As a UK can since age 8 45 years ago I have never seen a head coach here get this kind of pass. Joe B Hall won it in 78 my parents wanted him gone by 81 Tubby consistently took underrated teams to ridiculous heights they out for sale signs in his yard not for losing but for not getting to the final four I never knew what it was like to not get in the tournament let alone lose in the first round. This man has managed to do both those things twice in four years. The people in our fan base that still defend him blows my mind

The biggest name we have ever seen coming from this town. He’s not the only player from our town to make it to the league but he is 100% the biggest . Insane is a correct statement in letting Cal stay. Why, you ask: -- The first 10 years were great for Kentucky. First was his different look on both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. -- He got better players for his type of game. But not having the best player for the older group, he got more into the young players with great athletes. Not basketball players. But he had success in sending them to the NBA. CAL then forgot the BBN BUT, the first 10 years make him a hall of fame coach. But since covid, you began to see coaches were breaking UK dominance was no more. That's because Cal could not adapt, and he put down the BIG BLUE NATION and pretended he was smarter. Then came the remarks that he could not coach the game, and he always and I mean always played the blame game when it counted. I got so tired of " they are so young" So last 5 years, he tried the older players once. John Calapsri has shown he can not coach in the new NCAA. Barnheart is not the best AD. Far from it. He has made terrible hires and bad decisions. Mitch Barnheart is very lazy and plays through his guts and not by facts. Why would Barnheart give a 33 million dollar by out. Because he does not do his homework. Cal was losing his wedge, and Mitch again failed for it. Of course, these are just opinions, and some are ify at best because I have always thought Mitch Barnheart was a bad pick for the athletic director. Both should be fired. That may hurt for a few years, but if done right, the Craft money would come out and fix the progra6wbere it could be again. But it will take some cat balls to do it. Thanks CE

Well everytime sheppard/dillingham started or played xtra minutes this year we lost. 3game streak @rupp and loss to unc chatlotte. They came off the bench because those 2 werent the best at D & we all saw it. Cal tried to make the fans happy by playing mitchell & benching wagner in the tourbey game. Not hard to figure out what happened. We seem to have too many ppl wgo think they are coaches & if they just listen to what thet say we would have won at title. Leave the coaching to the hall of famer. We arent that far from our goal of winning, not enough to pay that much $ then hope only marxh improves. Its called march madness for a reason. First thing that needs to happen is for the ppl causing the uheaval & backstabbing to turn in their fan cards. Cal changed his whole style of play this year. Now ppl want his original style back. Just take ur passy out and go donate so we can buy a championship. Period.

The problem with Cal, is Cal himself. He has no incentive to win once he got the lifetime contract. Just check out his record once he signed the deal. He can't live outside that big head on his shoulders. This won't get better next year either. He is in bed with all the libs in Lexington and they are the only ones that think he walks on water. They will loose again next year. You know what makes a good coach??? It's not how you start, it's how you finish, so how has he finished the last how many years??? You will be surprised just how low of a coach he is.

I don't understand you. Stoops is the best football coach UK has had since Bear Bryant. Fran Curci was a cheating dog, Jerry Claiborne had a good gimmick with the wide-tackle 6, but he wasn't as successful as Stoops. Bill Curry came in and showed us why he got fired at Alabama. Hal Mumme designed a fun way to lose. Papaw Brooks was a good coach but he was too old when we got him. Then we had the Joker Phillips debacle. He is the worst head football coach in history. THEN Stoops came in and had to start from below the bottom.

You point out Mark Richt but that worked out perfect for Georgia. Other programs, like Tennessee football fired a stagnant coach (Fulmer) and went into the toilet. It is a real risk. Despite that, UK should probably have made the move because their fans have turned on the program.

Calipari is not a good coach. The results speak for themselves. It's even more obvious in the NIL era because freshmen teams aren't cutting it anymore. Look at this year's team. Incredible amount of talent, best 3 point shooting team in UK history, two lottery picks, etc. 10 losses, no conference championship, and zero postseason wins. Calipari has only had success in the postseason when he has overwhelming talent. Now that the freshmen arent getting it done, Cal is lost.

Cal outsmarts himself with the baffling lineup choices. Devon Booker is a great example, Let's not forget Karl Athony Town splitting minutes with Dakari Johnson on that team as well. Two of the best scorers in the NBA of the last decade and that team only average 72ppg is still one of the most embarrassing stats in CBB history. And dont get me started on, yeah but they went 38-1....Dude the 2015 SEC conference outside of UK was the worst collection of teams since I began watching UK in 1986. SGA not starting till January is a great example, Quickly not being featured over bum ass Ashton Hagan only because he was ranked a few spots higher in the recruiting ranks till it was desperation time in 2020 was baffling. Yes I get he's trying to build chemistry and not alienate the AAU gatekeepers by featuring the highest ranked players, but at what cost. And of course bring Sheppard and Dillingham off bench all year will only look worse in 10 yrs when Sheppard is the next Steve Nash

Keeping him is smart. UK is just spoiled from all the prior success in basketball. Plus, it's a hefty payout. This guy produced some great talent on the court this year. They just needed to be a little better defensively. Maybe it's about just having the right assistant coaches as well, especially defense.

Just a thought I think a couple of reasons why they didn't fire Cal is because they didn't want to lose the players that aren't going to NBA and Cal has another 6 players coming in next year which is suppose to be one of the top rated classes again. He needs to quite recruiting kids until the season is done. College basketball needs to be like football can't leave until after junior year this sh!t would stop. Fair assessment imo, but Calipari is a great coach, and with top coaches players come first. That is what made Calipari great. Seriously, I wonder what the players would say about who is losing the games. No team wins without going through adversity, not even Kentucky.
