I'm a lifelong Legion fan, but the 5 Years Later run is far and away my favourite era. In fact, it's one of the single greatest runs of any comic (up to and including the destruction of Earth).

Keith Giffen's costume redesigns were brilliant. They were so different from any other superhero costumes ever created before.

The fear of the Durlans was based on the fact that they could camouflage as anything, so people were suspicious of them which was how Marla met RJ way back when. It is kinda like people being suspicious of the Titanians like Saturn Girl because they were afraid that the Titanians could read their minds, and Titanians were made to wear tags saying they were from Titan. Good memories :)

I just got the last of the Giffen issues from this run today so it was a happy coincidence to stumble across your channel. I kinda have a love/hate relationship with this series - I loved the new direction and the willingness to try something radically different, but I hated what they did to Blok. He was such a gentle character and didn't deserve what happened to him.

I loved the 5YG era, but I also always viewed it as "not real" - basically an ongoing Elseworlds Legion series because there were too many incongruities between it and previous continuity (even though the series was steeped in that history like no other). I suppose technically everything both after Crisis and after the early in-series reality alteration with Mon-El replacing Superboy in stature was a different continuity anyway, but with the eventual reboot happening (giving us a clean post-Crisis version with the "Archie Legion", as we jokingly called it on the DC message boards), it always felt right to me to think of the 5YG era as an alternate reality.

My view is that 5YL stories after the Three-Issue-Sidestep are just as much in continuity as the previous stories. Basically, when Mon-El destroys The Time Trapper it undoes everything that The Time Trapper did (he warned Mon-El of this). This resulted in a universe where The Legion never existed and Mordru has ruled the Galaxy for 17 years (this is the reason The Time Trapper altered events, to create The Legion to stop Mordru). However, Mordru apparently had memories of the previous timeline and started talking about them to entertain his subjects. Several individuals (including Querl Dox) pieced together Mordru's comments and figured out what had happened. With the assistance of Glorith (whose death was undone and was now one of Mordru's wives) cast a spell to restore a version of the old timeline. In the resulting timeline: (1) Glorith took The Time Trapper's place in history and manipulated events to create The Legion, (2) replaced Superboy with Valor and Supergirl with Laurel Gand, and (3) Ultra Boy went from being a dumb jock to being a savvy and highly intelligent person who pretends to be a bit dumb and became the secret savior of the Galaxy by manipulating Mordru to attack Glorith before either was ready, preventing either of them from becoming an unstoppable force and keeping the Galaxy free. As far as I'm concerned the Legion that came out of the Three-Issue-Sidestep is a valid Legion. I don't fault The Creative Team for the changes that they were forced to make, they tried to keep as much of the old continuity as possible. They did the best they could but in the end they were forced to wipe everything out and start again because they were spending more time fixing continuity issues rather than telling stories.

I tapped out with this issue! I'd been a casual Legion fan for years but the team of PAUL LEVITZ and KEITH GIFFEN made me a fan 4 LIFE.... then this happened, the "Magic Wars" aftermath! DC's "Dark and Gritty" trend had gone too far!

Loved this series been following legion since 1974 when I started reading but the five years later version was one of my favorites until they did the zero hour tie in issues

The reason they still used "Boy/Girl/Lad/Lass" names was explained in a story where they established that due to extension of life expectancy in the 30th Century. Due to that people in their 30s and 40s are still considered children.

Unghhhh… I was a legion fanatic…my cousin introduced me to the LSH in 5th grade like ‘78… I followed the LSH throu the levitz/giffen era, then became a teenager and got distracted lol… came back to the LSH in the beginning of college and checked out the 5 years later arc … absolutely f’ng hated it… giffen art had changed drastically ( in my opinion)… and just couldn’t get behind the new “ grim n gritty “ feel of this new arc.. it did not capture the magic that I loved about the legion… lol.. still waiting for that old legion magic… 45 years later… it’s my dream for someone… someone!… to restore the greatest comic that ever was… long live the legion!!!…

The Imskites are able to shrink down to subatomic size, allowing them to go pretty much anywhere. As far as how they were able to subjugate the Brallians, they developed a weapon that turned the Brallians magnetic powers against them. It would either cause them to explode (that's what happened to Loomis' arm) or strip them of their magnetic abilities (as happened with Rokk). That, combined with the ability to shrink down, allowed the Imskites to defeat the Brallians. Vi objected to what her people did during the war and when she spoke out against it her superiors put her in prison.

I loved the Legion, but Giffin's art caused me to drop Legion. Giffin was a good writer, but his art stunk in my opinion! I go all the way to 1964! And even though Marvel was stealing me away, Adventure Comic featuring The Legion of Super Heroes was my favorite Comic. I even entered a 'Create a Character' contest in 1967 and sent in a 30th Century Justice League of the United Planets consisting of characters who were worthy, but are in their 20s. I had a Krytonian/Daxxamite, a throwback Thanagarian, the Wonder Woman of the 30th Century, a professor who rediscovered the Plastic Man formula, the Female Tornado Twin, a non Green Lantern female alien who had Green Lantern powers without weakness.

Try to describe them. Questar: a Krytonian/Daxxamite hybred. He's basically Superman but he is immune to Kryptonite and Lead. What he looks like: a Young Athletic Jean Claude Van Damme. Wears a Roxxon police uniform, with a small 'S' shaped badge like all Roxxon police do as a tribute to Superman Wonder Woman 10: The 10th Descendant of the first Wonder Woman. She's actually a little more powerful than the original. Slightly stronger and can actually fly, which the Silver Age WW could only 'ride air currents' What she looks like: I actually cheated and had her look like Raquel Welch. Professor Manplastic: A chemistry Professor, mid-20s but brilliant. A former Basketball player, kind of tall, and thin still. He rediscovers the formula that 'Eel' O'Brian was exposed to, reinforces it with Gingold used by Elongated Man. This becomes Super stretchy. Able to do things even Plastic Man and Elongated Man couldn't do. What he looks like: I kind of envisioned him as a young Jimmy Stewart type. I think I just had him in all black. Condor: A Thanagarian Policeman who earned the coveted Winged Helmet. He discovered that he was a 'Throwback' who could grow his own wings and that his hands and feet could morph into supersteel razor sharp talons capable of slicing through Starship steel! What he looks like: Hawkman with real wings, talons, and his hair and eyebrows have become feathers. Tornado; the Female Tornado Twin who permanently regained her 'Flash Powers'. What she looks like: Pretty much like her Comics counterpart but 20 years old. Emerald: The Guardians of Oa gifted a Baton like 'Test Weapon' to the 'Protector' of the planet Gelatia. The wand had 90% of the power of a Green Lantern power Ring but with no weakness to yellow or wood and also never needed recharging. The 'Wand of the Protector' was passed down from Mother to 'Worthy' Daughter. Gelatian's live 1,000 years BTW. Emerald was the most skilled user in History. But she feared someone taking the Wand even though they couldn't use it. As such she absorbed the Power into herself. Also Gelatia is a high gravity planet. On Earth she has the strength of 10 men. What she looks like: A really Buff Jarella or the pretty She Dragon with the long hair! Her race has Green skin and the vast majority are blonde.

To me, the major change in Giffen's art began with this series. Although you can still see some of his old style (the one I liked) on the page with the White Witch, it definitely changed after this, looking almost like a completely different artist.
