Love your previous stuff and feels surreal having you make a video on me haha, wanted to give you some reasoning on some of the things you talk about - Ocean - I actually forgot i had the 7 obsidian from the blacksmith, and I should have talked about it more in the video, but i wanted as much ocean travel as possible because i didnt think i was gonna fast travel in that moment Bastion Trades/Pearls - I dont know how familiar you are with bastion strats, but the thought process is to get more pearls then you need and throw yourself around the nether until you find a fortress, I obviously didnt know where the fortress was so i didnt know how many i needed, so to play it safe i wanted to wait for a little more Again, thank you for the video! The number of enderpearls he got wasn’t crazy. I left this as a reply, but I’ll leave it as its own comment too: So I did some math. Using the fact that Piglins take exactly 6 seconds to examine gold items, I timed how long each Piglin was trading to determine that there were a total of 85 Piglin trades before Couriway left them. Next, recall that Piglin’s have a 20/423 chance of dropping ender pearls in Minecraft 1.61.1 and when they do, they drop a random amount between 4 and 8. Using this in a Binomial distribution with some case analysis, I calculated that the probability of getting 21 ender pearls or more from 85 Piglin trades in Minecraft 1.61.1 is about 58.403127%. In other words, if a player did the same thing Couriway did, they would most likely receive the same number of ender pearls or more than Couriway did. In that sense, the number of ender pearls Couriway got was about average if not slightly unlucky.

While it is quite lucky to get good bastion+fortress and a good stronghold after nether traveling, this run looks WAY less suspicious than the previous record. It looks like a standard bastion run, but everything else went right. The previous wr looked like 2000 stars aligned at the same time.

The waiting for more thing is called Bastion Strats, and it is a new strategy used by speed runners. Also, the fortress spawn is because of the fact that structures generate in 4 quadrants around 0,0 and he was going to the most likely quadrant where it could be. The pearl trades are not that lucky since he traded a stack of gold and likely got 4 trades, which is was different than korbanoes’s 5 gold for 2 trades. Edit: at 7:18 you can see that I’m placed number 13 right now, which is why I know all of this.

About the pearl trades, I think it’s real, because one time I was practicing speed running and traded with a piglin, the piglin first gave me 16 pearls then 8 more. So it could have just been luck like mine.

Mate, I understand your scepticism, but you should've thought about pearls situation for a bit longer. Bastion pearl grind and regular one are quite different. While in regular runs you barter with 1 or if you're lucky around 3 piglins while getting gold from ore, or sometimes having like 5-9 or 18 from chests or blocks on ruined portals, you don't really have any wiggle room and most runs are 10-13 pearls from 2 trades. Here he had 126 gold with 4 piglins from start and up to 7 after some time, in this types of runs the rate of getting pearls is so high that you can easily get around 2 stacks of pearls and use them as means of traveling. This strat is rare, but used by a lot of speedruners if there's an opportunity. I'll go in depth in my reply to this comment

In 1.16.1 there's a 4.73% chance of getting 4-8 pearls from 1 gold(6 on average), I'm pretty sure it's correct, you can check it by hand in game. After throwing a stack of gold into a few piglins they'll take it simultaneously in a second or 2 and will give you an item every 6 seconds, rarely wasting like a second of time to get to gold, but it's rare and doesn't take a lot of time, so something like 10 trades with 10 piglins usually takes around 62-68 seconds(2 while starting and sometimes a phew from some of them not picking up the gold for a second, cumulatively adding up to 1 cycle time for 1 or 2 piglins), so usually its 6xN of barters/N of piglins+a few seconds. In his run on 6:08 of the run he accidentally drops gold block, this attracts 4 piglins to that spot with 1 more a few blocks away, on 6:15 he trows a stack of gold on those 4 piglins, on 6:40 another piglin goes into the hole of gold, from that point those piglins stay on the same place as well as gold, so practically no time loss, and most of trades would take 6 seconds, then on 7:21 hoglin attacks him but 1 piglin tries to kill that hoglin, appearing just a block from gold hole, on 7:30 piglin goes away, by 7:50, when Couriway returns to the hole piglin that was under the plank stairs being like 2 blocks from the hole isn't there anymore, but now there's 7 piglins in the hole, we aren't sure when they got there during that period of time. At 7:52 he gets to 16 pearls by hetting 8 in the beginning, then 4 while he was away with hoglin, and 4 more when he returns, getting 8 and 2 4s is an unusual combination, but every drop has the same chance, and it's not like he got 3 8s or 3 4s, then on 8:07 he gets 5 more pearls, that's also quite low, ho he only got 13 pearls from 3 times he got pearls but 8 on the first one compensates for that. At that point there was 7 piglins in the hole with something like 40-50 ingots on the ground or not traded, and with those conditions he should get 1 pearl trade approximately every 21 seconds from that pint, so waiting for getting more than 16 pearls wasn't a waste of time. Finally if you'll calculate how many trades happened during that time you'll get 22.7 pearls or 3.8 pearl trades when he got 16(this is if 2 piglins went for gold trading just as he was attacked by hoglin(I forgot that 1 piglin went after hoglin, so it's actually a bit lowwer than that)), or 20.2 pearls or 3.4 pearl trades if 2 piglins jumped into the hole seconds before he came back, witch is still higher than what he got with 16 pearls and 3 trades, and then if we will calculate the chances for when he gets 21 pearls, then the average is 21.9-24.1 pearls or 3.6-4 pearl trades, that's pretty close to what he actually got, but probability calculations don't include the fact that he leaves just after getting those pearls, and remember that it doesn't include those seconds and cycle shifts, but that adds only a few seconds to some trades or can fully shift like 1 or 2 trades . In conclusion he isn't only not crazy lucky as you said, but he got bellow average luck. I'm not saying that he didn't cheat, but at least it wasn't in drop rates or something, or at least he made them give him around average trades instead of awful luck that usually kills a ton of runs. This was an interesting morning for me

You seem to be missing that bartering chances were tweaked in 1.16.2, and this run is on 1.16.1. For 1.16.1 bartering, you get 4-8 ender pearls for about 5% of the time. In 1.16.2, you get 2-4 ender pearls for about 2% of the time. So, if this run was in 1.16.2, then yeah that pearl trade is extremely lucky, however in 1.16.1, it's not that impressive.

You keep saying that he had no reason to stay for more extra pearls, and that is blatantly false. 12 are needed on average to account for portal + eye breaks, and extra pearls save an immense amount of time in both the nether and when traveling to the stronghold. Yes he could have left with 4 spare, but that meant he was banking on a very close fortress and stronghold. He ended up getting exactly that, but if he hadn’t, which is what is expected, he would still be able to make world record time because of pearl travel. The argument that it was crazy lucky to get so many pearls is also false, he had traded 40-50 gold which yields 12-15 pearls on average (1 in 20 ingots yield 4-8 pearls, 6 on average). Please check your facts next time.

Though it is statistically viable, I think that getting the 1 in 20 chance that you want is inherently luck based. If you flip a coin and call heads. Your lucky if it lands on heads, eventhough the odds would place you as just a normal result

this video is an awesome time capsule - the community's shock at bastion strats and how surprised everyone was that trading 64 gold might give you over 12 pearls (4:48 is painful to listen to nowadays). also nobody knowing the fundamentals of pearl travel; mentioning that he should've went for the perfectly good enclosed nether wastes over the very scary open lava sea with a huge sightline. shows how quick everything evolves and how normal is just a relative thing. leaving on 16 is a totally overboard safe strat back then, what are you gonna use those for? maybe if you get 4 eye breaks :P but leaving on 16 is totally a highroll nowadays, you're totally using at least 2 of those to get to fort, 2 minimum on postblind with double travel, 1 in the end is nice or 2-3 if you're doing zero. also the paranoia following dream's scandal. not only is everyone fresh out of trust, there's also a huge emerging viewer market for speedrun cheating content.

After seeing this vid I really felt how much speedrunning has changed. I mean nowadays literally every runner would have gone for the bastion, waited for extra pearls go to positive positive and PErch manipulation. So could we argue this is the run which revolutionist speedrunning?

Unless they changed drop rates, those pearl trades are pretty common, when I was playing right after 1.16.2 came out it was ridiculously easy to get pearls

Some of your argument are... a bit weird, sounds like you're squeezing out those points just to make a video he get a extra pearl trade is clearly for travalling since fortress are most likely far away, getting it just saves time and his pearl trade luck is amazing? Imagine if he didn't get this bastion, his gonna mine for ages, definitely worse than average also, fortress spawns more in basalt is false, what he is saying is mobs spawn more in basalt because there is no other mobs spawn in basalt (except magma cube) stronghold is also not "just luck", the thing that's useful about 4 4 strat is that portal spawns near entrance, so its not just to finding stronghold, its also useful to find portal room I think this run is VERY suspicious too, but I just can't agree on this points

“He got super lucky with his pearl trades” Honestly he didn’t. He plays on 1.16.1 instead of 1.16.5 (like all speed runners going for wr) increasing the pearl drop chance from ~2% to ~5% and with that amount of gold and that many pigelins, he honestly got fairly average luck there.

Its mostly since his first ever posted runs were already insane. Its quite normal to be suspicious of insane and fast improvements by someone who hasn’t been in the scene long and therefore doesn’t have the same trustworthiness as existing runners. (Since its rarely well known runners who suddenly start cheating). Its alright to be suspicious, just a lot less cool when people immediately jump to claiming its fake.

the reason he gets 16+ ender pearls is because of the sheer amount of gold bastions have, typically people trade around 12 gold blocks (108 gold ingots) with an average pearl chance of about 4.73%, pearls drop in groups of 4-8, average of 6, if you wait for all the gold to be traded on average you'll get 30.64 ender pearls, bastion strats are insane, getting 16+ enderpearls is expected from them bastions also have a large amount of piglins just ready to trade with you this can makes getting enderpearls extremely fast, now its even faster, with bastion routing these strats have been advanced even further, for someone who doesn't know how bastion strats work I can see how that looks sus but I assure you it isn't, people sometimes walk out with 2 or more stacks

Two reasons why he would want more pearls- 1. Nether travel faster 2. Over world travel faster It is much faster wait for more pearls and using them than just going at 16
