I've got Montrero/Pajero/Shogun myself. If you take 2nd and 3rd row of the seats you will end up with 185-190cm space at the back which is big enough to sleep inside comfy, without need to spend $$$$ on the tent. Then you don't have to worry about extra weight, air drag and problems with tent in general. You can as well attach british 9x9 command post tent to it, which has a special sleeve to be attached to the car on one side.

Tip on the stereo- you can remove the factory cd player and move the climate control to its location and then youhave a double din space to install a double din stereo. You got lucky with that blank key if its matched to the car, they go for like 400 bucks matched to the car.

No problem. Factory stereo does a decent job, but its a nice upgrade to make it a little more modern. Another hack if you dont know already is that you can totally remove the 3rd row seat and give yourself a huge amount of extra storage space inthe seat storage area. Also, the intake plenum has 6 butterfly valves that have little bolts that fall off and ruin the engine. You can either loctite themand reove te butterflies altogether. The procedure is posted all over the forums so google it to figure it out..

Good platform to overland with. Much better than the Crosstrek. I would caution against buying a RTT (Roof Top Tent). It is all the craze right now but no one really talks about the disadvantages of owning one. I had one (CVT Mt Rainer) for two years and sold it back in 2018. 1. First disadvantage is that your mpg is going to drop 2 to 4 mpg especially on this Montero since the RTT is a brick on top of your already tall vehicle. 2. Second, your center of gravity will increase which means you will not be doing any bouncy terrain or feel comfortable driving in the sand dunes (like at Sand Lakes Recreation Area) without feeling like you will tipping over. 3. Third, you will likely not fit in any parking garages if you go to downtown anywhere or the airport parking unless you park in the street/open parking site. Especially if you decide to lift the Montero and put bigger off-road tires on. 4. Fourth, you will be saying to yourself that you will take the RTT down winter time so it won't have mold or other stuff growing inside. The reality is that it is too bulky/heavy to do it by yourself and that the mounting is too tight under the roof rack cross rails to dismount/mount. BTW, I also fabricated my own custom low profile flat aluminum roof rack and good luck getting the RTT mounted if you go that route because you will have even less clearance to mount the the RTT unless you fabricate your own special RTT mount. 5. Fifth disadvantage, your house goes with you everywhere. That means after you setup camp and you want to go somewhere else to pick up firewood, fishing, or exploring, you will need to pack up your RTT because it goes with the vehicle. It is much easier to fold the seats down in the Montero and create a sleeping platform to camp than using the RTT. Much faster to setup/pack up the camp too. This is what I do now. If my family comes along, I carry a ground tent or pull my trailer. If you understand those disadvantages and can live with them, then having the RTT makes sense. There are advantages to having RTT as well but I am sure you are aware of them. The primary reason I have the RTT before I sold it was that I felt safer in the RTT than ground tent since no cougars or wolves can get to me (same can be said if you camp inside your vehicle).

Thanks for all the great information! I definitely think they aren’t for everyone but I love taking photos and doing weekend trips and it’s gonna work out great having a rtt for me 😁

Thule makes a garage lift for their rooftop cargo boxes that consist of ropes and pulleys and cross bars called the MultiLift for about 130 bucks. There are several systems out there for cargo boxes that look like they could easily be adapted to handle storing a RTT. Just make sure 1. You can drive in the garage with a RTT installed and 2. You anchor the lift system and use ropes that sufficently handle the weight of the RTT.. Good luck.
