Validation first, I have 40 plus years in traditional professional woodworking, and have used the Veritas system both the flat and cambered roller, which seems to be the only thing this jig did not have come with it. I think this tool looks outstanding and will be getting one as think students will find it easier to use than the Veritas system...Thank you for sharing this...!!!

One might could achive a similar slight cambering of a plane iron by applying additional pressure to the outside edges of the iron. At least that's what I'm telling myself while I'm waiting on mine to arrive.

@@90FormulaE8 You can, but it is not easy nor accurate and can "gouge" softer stones...and I share that from experience trying to make a flat roller system "work" as compared to one with a camber. However "cambering" an extra roller would work and what I have done to other jigs for students that could not afford the Veritas system...but I will be sending them toward this one now...Thank you for your comment!!!

I have the Mooho sharpening system. So far I really like it. I free hand sharpen most of the time but I have to have a jig to restablished the bevel every so often. I highly recommend it for beginners and veterans too.

Just a word of caution on the "Digital Height Gauge". This version have changed since it was reviewed. It no longer has a harden steel tip soldered on and just have what looks like a solid steel scriber. It was at least what i got when I ordered this a while back. I find that the quality and fit of things are a bit of a hit and miss on these items. Quality just varies a lot since quality control is basically non existent at these prices. Hongdui has always been good though. Thanks for the video

Hey Dennis. Another great video. A thought for a possible video re Banggood ordering. I have experienced many frustration with the whole ordering process due to their confusing descriptions compared to pictures. I have often received one item when I expected two. Or I have expected to get a complete set of something and then only receive one part. You may have some suggestions on how best to ensure what you order is what you expect to get.

I bought that red set based on your recommendation. It can't hold my chisels between the jaws. The jaws are not parallel. This seems to be much better, but I won't buy a second one.

This looks amazing. The look and finish is like the Bridge City Tools (now Harvey of China) HG-4. But it has the additions of the Veritus wheel for secondary bevel. The additional support for the chisel as the Lie Nielsen. This ticks a lot of boxes. The value is also on the money!

Amazing. The first real competitor to the Veritas sharpener. The only thing that this Hongdui system lacks is an optional barrel roller for sharpening plane blades with a light radius. (Veritas mk II has such a roller and the results are awesome)

The upper clamp is like Bridge City, and the long jaws are like Lee Nielsen. But with Nielsen, each new pair of jaws must be purchased separately, and here it is done better: one pair of jaws with the ability to skew them. Smart.

I've been looking at sharpening systems for a long time, and couldn't quite pull the trigger on the Veritas system because it just wasn't quite enough for the price, and the Lie Nielsen system was more than I wanted to spend. I'm already a huge fan of Hongdui stuff, and this seems to get all of the features of the LN system at the price point of the Veritas one. Hongdui has yet to let me down, so … early Christmas present for myself.

Dennis, I think that it might be about time that you have a "above and beyond" within your star scoring system. Especially when certain tool's are way above what you expect. So for instance the first sharpening system in red was a 5 star review. This sharpening system is also a 5 star from your review, but because of how this works you could score it as a " 5 star +". Overall another fantastic product and in all honesty I really am considering purchasing one to replace my Veritas sharpening system 🤔. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

I have the vertias sharpening system but it appears that this system would replace that whole setup and probably do better on the secondary bevels since my veritas has a bad habit of skewing when honing the secondary.

Ja, ben ik wel met je eens. Hoewel er altijd wel omschreven wordt wat er in zit. In dit geval is de complete set zonder de "extended claws" Die heb je ook alleen in specifieke situaties nodig. Maar wil je die erbij hebben, dan zal je deze los erbij moeten bestellen. Dus je krijg dan de complete set van rond de 100 euro plus de extended claws voor 33 uit mijn hoofd. De prijs voor de basis unit met "extended claws" is 115 euro, maar als je dan de overige spullen erbij moet bestellen kom je veel duurder uit. Dus het goedkoopste is nog steeds de complete set plus de Extended claws seperaat erbij. Bedankt voor je feedback.

Hi Dennis. Thank you for an excellent review. I do have one major concern that maybe you can address; will the Hongdui Sharpening System fit traditional japanese chisels ? I have a full set that I bought in 1982/83 when I was a student and they have always been my go-to chisels. As I am sure you know the blade on these are very short and I have not yet seen a sharpening system that take this into account. Keep up the good work. It is impossible to order a complete item as one item for both of sharpening devices. Hongdui could be ordered as 4 piece device though there are 5 pieces in total. Frustrating!

Safe to say, its heavily inspired by the Veritas Mk2 (which imo is massively overrated). Have you tried it with Japanese plane blades? (they taper in thickness and width)

Well, I do not know about the "heavily" part, but I agree it looks more to the Veritas system than the Woodpeckers system. That said, compared to the Hongdui version, the Veritas just looks like a bad attempt to copy it. The Hongdui version is so much more sophisticated, and I think it is cool to see how many innovations they brought to this system. They certainly did not take the easy road.

@@HookedonWood Yeah, sorry, but I have to disagree an a few parts here. I have the Veritas system and apart from a vastly(!) lower price (in 2023 when I bought it at least, the standard kit was 62€) I fail to see any major advantage of the Hongdui clone and also I don't see a higher build quality -- not sure what the Hongdui is made of but Aluminium wouldn't be great and if it was steel then it wouldn't be great. The Veritas standard set clamps down from the top so it can be used for blades and chisels of any size effectively, however there's also a side clamping vice which simplifies and speeds up the centered fixation of smaller chisels (which I have bought for another 50€). I'm a bit sceptical about the non-locking/non-fixed secondary bevel setting on the Hongdui as it could move and also makes it difficult to get consistent secondary bevel angles -- as you've pointed out, consistency it key for sharpening! Also important is the ability to easily get replacement brass rollers as they will wear (also affecting the angles!). Veritas also offers barelled rollers to round of the edges of scrub planes which is a rather useful feature, compared to the skewed angles the Hongdui allows for (and are also achievable with the Veritas if needed, albeit at the "expense" of having to create an angled piece with the desired angle for the ruler. I would probably buy it if I didn't have the Veritas already since Veritas is harder to obtain and prices jump up and down but I wouldn't replace the Veritas with it, it is far too expensive for what it is at the 11.11 price.

I told in my video that the complete set is a bit above 100 euros. So, that did not change. A woodpeckers system costs 270 dollars. Considering the fact this system is so much more flexible, innovative, and of better quality, makes it a steal. I will not argue that 100 euros is a lot of money. But for what you get, it is very high value!

Strange pricing options though,... 1 pcs set shows it has everyting in it (in the discription) but is not available to choose,... 2pcs set that is available is most expensive... there doesn't seem to be an option to buy the whole set... (or am I missing something)? What I do not like about the Mohoo system is the 2 rolers that are often wider than my diamond stones. This new Hongdui design solves that!

I agree that the complete set is without the extended claws. But you need these extended claws on rare occasions. So, If you want them, you have to buy them separately. Besides that, it seems pretty logic to me.
