The NEW SMALLER Renogy 220w Suitcase Solar Panel Compared to the 400w Suitcase!

I have the Renogy 400w, I like it and it works fine. Not too bulky to move around (like the horrible EcoFlow 400w panel). I went ahead and got the 400w due to shrinking sunlight area in my backyard to set up. Over the past few years, the shadows from some oak tree canopies (think 80-100ft tall trees) has grown more and reduced the area of full sunlight my yard gets, so I need to get as much solar input for my AC180 and Delta Max 2 in a hurry before shadows take over. Spreading out two 220w panels would get tricky.

I really like both of these. The rigid frame is so much better than most other portable panels. I have two of the Blueti PV350's and although not as bad as the EcoFlow 400 watt panel, they do droop quite a bit especially when hot. The 220 watt model seems to have the perfect Voc to make putting 2 in series a great match for most of those power stations that have the 60 volt, 500 watt input limit. Thanks for reviewing!

I look at the footprint, it seems the 400 watt panel would be the best choice if you need the extra power. Having 2 of the 220 watt panels out would obviously cover more area and twice the hook up. With my generator controlling the input myself I can ease off the power if all I used was the 400 watt if needed. It is to each his own. I think it's great to have many panels but would look at putting panels on the roof and forgetting about any footprint worry or damage from outside accidents or activities. In my opinion the more powerful and a single set up is def the way to go. Expand your power system and use all panels together. Either way this is a great video and I appreciate your concise effort very much.

Excellent reviews of both types of panels. I think I would buy a pair of the 220's and one of the bigger 400w to keep at home for emergency power. This last hurricane knocked power out in TX for a couple of days at my son's place would have come in handy for him. Safe thing for us in AR where the power is constantly going out.

I have a 5 year old 200 watt suitcase panel from renogy. Its biggest downside is the build in PWM controller. Would have preferred just mc4 connectors

I have a Dodge Grand Caravan intended for longer travel, leaning toward the 400w model to save space over 2 panels. Have Bluetti AC180 & need to power APL35 Iceco 24/7 & electronics, occasional small appliances & fans. Stated dimensions on 400w should fit just behind sliding door. Considering 2nd AC180 on sale to power non-fridge items & for fridge when re-charging the other one. Alternate could be rooftop solar. Great reviews & love the frame, quality & waterproofness!!

Thanks for the review. I've always gone with Renogy and currently have 3 suitcase panels, the older heavy units, one 100w and two 60w which they discontinued long ago. So I have 220w going to a 30A Wanderer which is rated for 400w. I would prefer to get 2 220w units but Renogy says no way to the Wanderer and they have to since it technically isn't rated for 440w. But it sure seems like it would be very unlikely you would ever get an actual 440 out of these panels. But better safe I guess so probably a 40A in my future.

Hi Jason, your channel is a real gem, thanks very much for the education. Based in large part due to a number of your videos, I recently purchased a Bluetti AC180 power station along with a Renogy 220W suitcase solar panel. We went on a 6000 mile road trip and powered an ICECO VL45Pro refrigerator in the truck with no problem. The only "issue" I had was that the cable from the 220W suitcase to the AC180 was quite short. I'd like to keep the AC180 in the shade/vehicle while having the 220W suitcase panel nicely out in the sun without having to move it around a lot during the day at a base camp while overlanding. My question (for the equipment listed above) is would it be best to use a 20 foot or 30 foot (or other?) extension cable; additionally would it be better to use 12 gauge wiring or 10 gauge wiring (or other?) I'd appreciate your expertise on this. Thanks very much.

I'd recommend a 12awg cable for 20 feet, anything longer I'd go with 10 awg. This is a great option where the cables are connected together: amzn.to/3LWUT0S

While it was a fair bit more $$ than a 20 foot 12awg, I figured the extra length would be better able to get the 220W suitcase into the sunlight; it would also have a little less voltage drop; plus if I ever need to do a parallel panel setup (not with the AC180 though), the 10awg will better handle the increased amperage. I noticed walmart is selling ecoflow power stations with slightly lower battery capacity than other retailers. Example w-mart ecoflow river 2 has 243wh vs the normal 256wh. They seem to be carrying a derated unit in every size category. very strange.

Jason, I really like your videos. I'm thinking of getting the 220W suitcase to pair in series with my Renogy 400W suitcase. I have an Ecopro Delta 2 Max and the solar input max is 60V. Do you think it would be okay to use these together as a series pair? I'm pretty sure the voltage would be less than 60V due to line losses, but it would be great to get some feedback from you.

The rated VOC of those panels is over 60v. If it's hot and you confirm the VOC is less than 60v you should be good to use them in series. If it gets cold, you won't be able to use them together on the same port, you can plug one into one port and the other panel into the second port (since the D2M has two solar inputs).

It's hard to decide I'm new to solar generators & it seems you almost have to go slightly over what your solar input limit is just to get close to a maximum charge.. I have a Jackery 2000 with two charge ports that's limited to 400w each for a total of 800w two 400w panels on a average day won't have me near my max input

You can over amp the chargerl controller, just don't go over the max voltage.

@Jasonoid My goal would be 500w per side if I read correctly (i cant remember where) if you run your panels I believe it was in Parallel the open Circuit voltage is my main concern & would stay the same as long as all the panels are the same which I think means I'll need five 100w panels .. per side.. And that would be uncivilized 😄 .. After Browsing more info I realize I was wrong. Open circuit voltage gets multiply. So never mind, thank you.

Some of Renogys panels do offer built in charge controllers, and I think this 220w panel has that option.

Buy a good quality charge controller, from a company builds quality and has, at the very least poor customer support. Sadly and unfortunately, with Renogy you have poor quality in both area's. You will be left desperately frustrated

I watched your video before I decided on a solar panel. I went with the 220w Renogy. I did a quick test in 105 degrees F on a cloudy day and got about 80w. I took it camping and got about 130w to 150w in 90F plus weather. My 1000x GoalZero will not let me have my 100w panel run with this panel. I would like to get a second 220w panel and either y connect it to my 8 mm 20 ft cable or get a second 20 ft 8mm cable, and see if I can get them both to charge at the same time. I still have to drill a hole in my trailer and put a grommet in. I also want to get the 200ah Renogy battery and run the trailer off of that and the Truma C44 Fridge off of the GoalZero. I think I am asking too much of Renogy when I had the fridge at 34 Degrees F. IT just couldn't keep up, I had to run it at 37 degrees F. The 220w Renogy Solar panel does produce more energy than my DC to DC charging with my Outback Wilderness, 112w.

Does your fridge have a Max setting? If it's set to ECO mode it usually cant run fast enough to hold the setpoint but if you can set it to max mode, it should hold the lower temp just fine.

@@Jasonoid Ohh dang that was a quick response. Max setting, I'll check that. There are 2 items to check: Make sure turbo mode is off. Make sure I didn't flick the switch over to emergency over ride. The fridge is in the back with my Goalzero and the exhaust is pointed right at the Goalzero. Its not a lot of room back there. I added a fan to push the air around. I also have it plugged in AC to AC, so I'm losing a little bit in the conversion over to DC on the Goalzero. My Goalzero doesnt have the 2 prong plug on it. I have 2, 8mm ports, cigarette lighter port and an anderson port. I'm looking for a 2 prong to 8mm, don't even know if they make that. It's all about keeping my homebrew mead cold.

Great review as usual Jason. Would the Renogy 220 work together with my Bluetti PV200 on my Bluetti 180 power station? Or would it just be better to get 2 Renogy 220's? I heard the PV200 really only works well with another PV200.

To get the most power you'll need both solar panels to have the same voltage and amperage at peak power. You can see these specs on the back of the panel. Compare both and see how they differ.

Since I have small power stations, I will get the 220W one. Once I get a larger power station then I would have to decide if I would add another 220 and / or get a 440 and use the 220 stand alone for my smaller power stations. One question- are the kickstands adjustable for angle or do they open and lock in at a certain angle? I think this is great! Thanks for this great video!!!

Katy, the 400 is a little awkward for this 74 year old, but I don't have to move it very far. You have to watch for the total volt input with two panels.

I bought this product based on your review, and it's been a nightmare ever since. It arrived as a used, well-worn-out POS. After several phone calls, I returned it for a refund. Six weeks later, when I received a tracking number, they told me I was crazy and that they needed to educate me on the process. Now I have another panel and have to return it again. I showed real world performance of the panel, I could have just taken it right outside the case when it was cold and showed the full 200w+ but I let it sit in the sun and get hot....
