During Moscow’s Victory Parade in May of 2015, the Russian Defense Ministry debuted Russia’s latest secret project: the T14 Armata.
The most advanced tank ever produced was developed from scratch using a unified heavy vehicle platform that bears the same name, and it has been universally heralded as the first groundbreaking innovation in armored vehicles since their debut during World War 1.
If all goes according to plan, it is expected that the Armata will be delivered by 2023 and 2025 to the Russian Army and its allies, effectively starting a new era of tank warfare…

@WhizzingFish12 2 жыл бұрын
M1 tanker here. T14 is interesting but way overhyped. The hull and crew compartment in it are expected to be highly protected, but the turrets armor is REALLY thin and thus a good turret hit from any significantly sized gun or missile will destroy its ability to be more than a troop carrier. And the shock from even smaller rounds will likely destroy optics and thus any value. Plus a track/mobility kill is still a kill. Looking at javelins ability to defeat Russian ERA, I really don't think they would stand up to those either. In short, this is not in any way a super tank in actual usefulness.

I agree with Mr. Fisher on every point; i would also like to add that Russia's tank factories and design bureaus are all state run and owned or run by an oligarch who answers to the Kremlin. There for there is no variety which in an economy like Russia's is a big achilles heel. Take the US for instance when the Army/Navy/Air Force or Marine Corp need a new vehicle to replace an existing one they don't just ask one company but a bunch of Defense Contractors to build prototypes and undergo a multitude of trials to meet certain requirements put out by each of the branches. Take the JLTV replacing the humvee on the frontlines now, or the new IFV competition to develop newest IFV to replace the ageing fleet of Bradly fighting vehicles. Russia lacks diversity so they get half cocked blocky unproven tech on a shaky platform claiming invincibility from most modern vehicles but they are just tooting the own horn hoping the West doesn't develop something better.

The T-34 was NOT '30 years ahead' of its contemporaries. It was a slightly better than average design, that was absolutely butchered by production quality issues that utterly hobbled its actual real world performance. It suffered from numerous production defects; like missing crew seating, lack of rubber on the wheels, a garbage transmission that couldn't be shifted into its top gear, underpowered ammunition (bad powder in the shells), horrible sights/periscopes (i.e. polished metal rather than glass, unsealed and unheated so they fogged up and froze), lack of properly heat treated parts that broke down from wear prematurely, and armor spalling that would turn the crew into a shrapnel riddled mess even on non-penetrating hits and contributed to the tanks atrocious 85% crew casualty rate. The T-34 would have been a national embarrassment had it been fielded by any other nation in WWII.

@davidb8373 2 жыл бұрын
Whenever a number is given denoting thickness of armor, it’s not the actual thickness of the metal. It’s a strength equivalent to rolled homogeneous steel. It could be a mix of metal, ceramics, air gaps, plastic, or some other material. It’s just an estimate of how much steel it would be, since different tanks use different materials and designs. Even ww2 battleships didn’t have five feet of actual steel armor.

Very interesting topics and excellent (articulate) narration, but this channel really needs better editing. This vid, like many others, has an erratic script and occasional clear errors, which would have been caught and easily corrected, with a knowledgeable "2nd set of eyes". Examples: 03:02 "it was secretly announced ..." (Huh? How do you do this?) 04:24 broken down tank was "... able to continue on it's trajectory" (was it launched into the air?) 07:00 "... with LCD monitors with thermal imaging that further enhances their remote control capabilities." (the thermal imaging system is primarily used to augment the targeting system and only because of that, enhances the remote control.) 07:21 "tracking of up to 25 aerodynamic or 40 dynamic targets...' (What is an aerodynamic target? These are not standard tanker terms. - perhaps a poor translation from Russian brochures?) Finally, the video describes this as "the most advanced tank ever produced", and yet makes NO mention it's main gun specifications.

The thing with this tank is that it's a little to advanced for its own good. I will give the Russians credit they hit a home run with this concept. Even if this tank comes out 10 years from now it will still be the most advanced tank on the field with how current designs for other countries are going. The problems with it are really that it's to expensive for the Russians, the tank has a whole relys heavily on the new Relic ERA with poor armor on most of the tank especially the turret. That is supposed to be combated by the new steel they made for the tank but that's unknown at best. And while this will launch with the new Afghanit hard kill defense system I think the Russians are relying to much on that. Always open go debate this but I think it's a great concept and design but only time can tell if it will actually play out that way.

The T-14's breakdown during its debut at the military parade in 2015 was apparently due to the driver accidentally engaging the tank's emergency brake, which took several minutes to sort out before the obvious was discovered and it could resume its run in Red Square. That said, such a minor problem could potentially be fatal on the battlefield if the crew is panicked during an ambush. Besides its so-called revolutionary armor and new reactive armor, the T-14 boasts several anti-weapons sensors designed to very quickly detect and defeat weapons such as the Javelin, NLAW, AT-4, etc. But this remains to be seen how such systems will hold up IRL since Ukraine forces have proven to be very skillful in defeating all Russian armor so far. It would be easy to swarm a T-14 with multiple ATGMs to overwhelm its sensors and countermeasures, and blow both the tank and its crew all the way back to Moscow. Or maybe Putin is too chicken to send out the few T-14s available and risk losing face when his latest toy is turned into an expensive BBQ or is bogged down in the spring mud in Ukraine. Hopefully we will all find out soon. This tank was designed and manufactured by men, so it can be destroyed by other men who are defending their country. Slava Ukraini!

I think the t-14 handbrake issue you mentioned would not be an issue. We are talking about the debut of the tank, there is a high possibility the driver was sitting in that tank for the very first time. That said, it is still a tank, and will therefore obviously be incredibly vulnerable to the same things all tanks are. Ie Anti tank weapons (its in the name after all) attacks from above, losing mobility, etc. (And judging by the current conflict, the ukranians are very much aware of this, and they are doing a very good job at exploiting said weaknesses)

Russia flies the majority of supplies to the ISS. As a matter of fact you should look up Russian inventions/discoveries throughout history. Some of the most brilliant chemists and physicists have come out of Russia. And their discoveries have been widely adapted and used by the rest of the world. They have a budget like the UKs, but a vastly larger army. Even if they do get some things cheaper (soldiers pay fx) it is obvious they cut corners. They can only finance mass production of all their newest, fancy hardware by finding futue buyers for it, and as such they (Russia) have an interest in being portrayed as “on the cutting edge, or even ahead of the US and China in military hardware”. They’re not.

Considering the gun was not moving independently from the tank boy, I don't think it is stabilized to fire while in motion and remain on target, it looks like an old piece of crap with a few electronic toys and an independant crew compartment. So after blowing the gun off the thing you might have to get closer before killing the crew, if they don't die from the shockwave of whatever hits their tank.

T-90, ABRAMS, LEOPARD-2, CHALLENGER-2 are 3RD generation of tanks with some model given a 4rth generation tech Considering the new design and features of T-14 armata, this tank could actually be cosidered 4rth gen on its whole based on new design principle, just like how you would differentiate 4th gen to 4+ gen to a 4++ gen to a 5th gen fighter jets, ofcourse if all given specs and features are real, too bad this tank might not be mass produced and reach its goal numbers because of the current situation of the santions imposed, still depends how things would work out after mr.putin said that they would only accept rubbles as payment on their gas🤷

@@stc2828 All tanks have the same weakness, like the Abrams, one might say that "ABRAMS have 800mm armor in turrret" but its a composite armor wich will always be penetrated no matter what, also tank turrets isn't really that whole rotating thing rather the inner part or some sort, also any HE projectile including ATGM wont penetrate T-14 turret because of afghanit active protection system, Aghanit can also reduce APFSDS penetration but will still recieve damage so in conclusion only other tanks might be able to do some damage on the turret but in these time tank vs tank battle is kinda rare

ie when showing it off, the best crewman they could put into the job was inadequately trained (and so was the rest of the crew, because clearly not one of them said "have you checked the park brake?"). it also tells you that the drivers ergonomics suck - you shouldn't be able to accidentally engage the park brake, that could be lethal in combat. but the story explains a lot about how they are going in Ukraine, doesn't it.
