Love the original True Grit. Terrific movie. Wayne was great and Kim Darby also deserved the academy award. She was really good.

Basically, that's straight sour mash whiskey of at least 80 proof. In the time frame of the movie he's probably talking about Old Crow brand Bourbon.

I like both movies. I don't think one is particularly better than the other, just different takes on the same story. That being said, I think Strother Martin's scenes with Kim Darby in the original are some of his best moments on screen.

This clip really shows the shortcomings of the recent release of True Grit. The flow and humor here is just a lot better. Every one is talking about the Coen bros. Maybe someone ought to give old Henry Hathaway a bit of credit for the 1969 version. I like the younger Mattie concept in the newer version (and actually filming near Ft. Smith instead of Colorado), but so much about the older one is better...despite Glen Campbell trying to push his skills a bit far here. Rat scne alone is great.

@baggabliss my biggest issue with the new version is as good as Jeff Bridges is as an actor he had to way over play the part just to attempt to remake what John Wayne did with out effort. That diminished his role thus not meeting the standard set in the original. It was foolish to reboot a role that was already done to perfection by an actor who got a Oscar for the part.

The ending, yeah. Mattie never slept in the funeral parlor. No hanging. No RAT. No off the wall Bear Man/ dentist. No guy hanging 40 ft in a tree. La Beef and Rooster never went their separete ways, I was happy to see they got the clothes right, and the guns. But these segues into strangeness having NOTHING to do with the narrative ruined what arguably should've been BEST PICTURE. A test, pilgrim. Who played Stonehill in each version?
@johntabler349 Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the remake and won't, I think this version very faithful as an adaptation, most of the changes (Rooster with a mustache for instance) are superficial the book gives what happened after and the movie chose not to, the only big change is LaBoughs survives in one and not the other I think this version captures the feel, pace and most importantly the characters very well
@patsheppard26162 жыл бұрын
If you watch this movie several times, you will come to see that all the major characters make compromises in their behavior and their attitude towards each other. It increased their chances for survival. By the end of the movie they seem different people. The Marshall is more the man he used to be. Mattie Ross is a very independent minded young lady who never turns away from her pursuit of her fathers killer. She over comes overbearing lawmen and the brutal killers in the Ned pepper gang. The ranger died because he turned his back on danger. She almost dies at the hands of her fathers killer. But the Marshall with his toughness, his unwavering skill as a killer in his own right and his stern principles over comes all who come against him. He shows his heart when he does every thing he can to save her. He dispensed justice in a lawless wilderness. Mattie showed the change in her by inviting him to be buried with her family. The new true grit was a stunning disappointment after the first one. It had a few good moments. But no great cineography or music score

Haha old 'busthead', 'popskull', whiskey that got those monikers from the next morning hangover that left a man wishing he had died instead. No aspirin at this time either, but you could get a patent medicine with a high dose of opium or morphine to set things right. People criticize Glen Campbell's performance, but I thought he did fine for his very first acting gig. (John Wayne complained Campbell got the role just for singing the theme song, and didn't care for the movie or Kim Darby for that matter.)

shit if we had over the counter morphine or heroin today I don't see the point in drinking. if Theyre both legal I would say that alcohol is arguably just as bad or even worse. at least heroin doesn't turn some people into raging balls of anger like alchol does to alot of people
@ONTHEEDGEFRED3 жыл бұрын
@@untilitookanarrow While you are right about alcohol being just as bad as heroin, but, in a different way, I can't imagine preferring what heroin turns people into as opposed to what alcohol turns people into.

What is double rectified busthead? Is that moonshine or something? When I saw this part when I was a little kid, I just started laughing. I did not know what it meant, it just sounded funny.

Yep that's moonshine alright, the really good stuff

Oh I forgot to mention that double rectified indicates that it was distilled two time which wood make it about min of 190 % pure alcohol therefore the bust head. They proof it with water as no one can consume alcohol at 190%. Oh they could drink it but probable kill you. It wouldn't take a lot of it either. Not many are that stupid

Lol. John Wayne kills it here. 'You can't serve papers on no rat. You either gotta kill 'em, or let 'em be.' Well said, Rooster. Well said. EDIT: I see LaBeouf is even more of a douche nozzle in this version. If Chaney is gonna be dead no matter where he hangs, why chance bringing him all the way back to Texas? Why not just hang him there, in the same district where he murdered his last and latest victim? And calling a young lady 'unattractive' just because she doesn't bow and scrape for you and is immune to your charms really cements his douche nozzle status.

The original is infinitely better.....Wayne is brilliant...warmth, humor, kindness and pure badass .....a warrior of honor ...who is God's justice and fairness in this girls life. .the cinematography is beautiful the colors so robust and breathtaking.... the professionalism of the way the scenes were filmed....the pacing....brilliant. makes the remake look very ameturish . The remake with the yellow and brown muted color tones is a bore and a one trick poney.. It had no sincere charm to it...it was like a graphic novel version of this film for teenage boys. The original is art and a classic. Wayne is to westerns what superman is to comics.
@tjanderson58922 жыл бұрын
Wow I couldn’t disagree more. The original is great when judging it within the era it was made. But the remake elevates every scene and line of dialogue to another level. Bridges Cogburn looks exactly like a disheveled drunken Marshall. Wayne looks and acts like classic great Wayne playing another great character. Damons pride mixing w/ his insecurities and self absorption was an all time representation for the genre imo. Ya could like, hate, and root for Damons Labeouf and it feels like an actual person, not a character. Both girls did great as Mattie. I think Bridges and Damons added on screen banter sets the remake eons above the original. But the OG is still great for the time in which it was made
