They sell Huskee brand around here at Tractor Supply. I believe they are made by MTD (Murrey). You had a good run with your Craftsman...I was a lawn and Garden Technician for Sears for about eight years and replaced a lot of transmissions in those things. Sounds like your engine took a dump though, hole in the block, valves and/or blown head gasket. Might check and see if the spark plug hasn't worked it's way out, that would be a great quick fix eh?...lol
@JoeandZachSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+wtailhunter1 Its something internal for sure. I know I have quite a few people that are saying to get a new motor for it but one other issue that had been coming up more and more was that when I was tilling it wants to pop out of gear. Maybe its linkage but I am thinking that after 15+ years it may be the transmission and now that you said you replaced quite a few im thinking that more strongly. I mean it still tilled but doing my garden I am guessing it would pop out of gear 7 to 10 times now and I found that frustrating. Thank you. Joe
@wtailhunter18 жыл бұрын
+JoeandZachSurvival Probably a good idea to let it go then, someone on Craislist might want it for $50 or so. The new one you got seems to work pretty well. I highly recommend using Stabil in the fuel, cheaper than replacing the carb down the road. Gas we get these days is crap.

the point of my comment was that the old tiller is still a functional machine with resale value that you can recoup costs. Or you can use it at the tent or your dad's cabin for landscaping or gardening. The swing handle can be used for your observation or what we always sold the option is that you can swing the handle away from your worked area and leave the garden foot track free and be able to walk in the next row gap over when using the machine for cultivating rows. The tines are usually able to be removed or reversed for cultivating so that the outside reach wont rip up the roots of your planted rows
@JoeandZachSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Randy J I had no clue that was what it was for until I started reading the comments. I guess I still have some learning left in me to do Lol. I may look into fixing the old tiller just for a back up but at the tent, if you were to dig a hole in the ground exactly the same size as a 5 gallon bucket and then put everything you dug out in that bucket and dump it out. Over 3/4 of the bucket would be rocks. I think using a tiller up there may kill the tiller pretty fast or at the least you better have a 5 gallon bucket of bolts to use as the tine shaft shear pins. Thanks Randy. Joe
@BornRandy628 жыл бұрын
+JoeandZachSurvival tiller engines usually eat a bunch of dirt. If the motor wasnt smoking like a chimney then the air fitler was doing the job. So the test is to take the cylinder head off and observe the piston and valves when you pull the cord. If the piston doesnt move but the valves open and close then the end cap has come off the connecting rod. Depending on if it came off nicely or half way and got ripped the rest of the way you may be able to just put the parts back together. Get it running and sell it for garden season. Tell the new owner that the engine is weak and you arent being shady. Or you can spend the money on a new connecting rod. I have a 16 horse Briggs that was in the same condition that your tiller is. No resistance to being turned over. I put the bolts back together and it is still running 12 years later. Sometimes you get lucky. As long as the camshaft and crankshaft didnt get wiped out or damaged then a new connecting rod and a gasket set is a really cheap fix. Otherwise the replacement motor or a short block will probably be the cheapest route other than selling it as a broke machine needing a engine.

Joe, you could have went to Harbor Freight and bought an engine from there to replace the one on the other tiller, for around 200 dollars and is an almost direct replacement for old engine, maybe a bit of re-routing of cables for carburetor and kill switch. They also have a 13 horse power electric start model for around 350 dollars. The engines are an exact copy of the Honda engines and parts from Honda will swap fit the Predator. I have several of those engines and have for several years, they still start on first pull after sitting in barn all winter. spring and summer on the hydraulic log splitter and I have a couple on old vintage lawn tractors that I have restored and also on a couple tillers. In my opinion they are a great engine and hard to beat for the price even if they only lasted 2 or 3 years they would still be a cheaper alternative than buying brand name.
@JoeandZachSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Nortekj Thank you Nortekj. I may end up doing that. Does tilling still make sense? If I look at no-till, soil food web or Back to Eden gardening, I think that tilling is doing more harm than good, except as in very few scenarios... Any thoughts on the no-till approaches?
@JoeandZachSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+yxcvmk I do not like that scenario (for myself), you are constantly dealing with weeds. Also look at the root crops like potatoes and carrots and beets etc. having the soil tilled down and tilling in composted material greatly helps keep that soil loose so the roots can grow. Even in my garden, I till but that only goes down so far so I sometimes end up with carrots that are short and fat because they were not able to grow down any deeper. I have nothing against the approach and like when I see farmers doing it but even then, they are using spray on weed killers to do the partial job of the "till" I try and be as organic as possible. Another thing which is just a "me" thing i guess, I am a real stickler on my garden looking as perfect as possible. I believe that proper and well weeded with straight rows garden becomes a beautiful piece of the yards landscape. I wish I was not like that so much but I really can not stand when my garden looks messy. Tilling it truly does give you a clean slate and beautiful landscape to create a possible garden masterpiece for the season. I realize that all of that takes away from the true spirit of the garden being there just to sustain a person and grow veggies so I may be a bit weird LOL. In short, The no till approach is a really awesome idea but would drive me freaking nuts. haha. Thank you. Joe
@yxcvmk8 жыл бұрын
+JoeandZachSurvival Thank you. Yeah, a tidy garden... I can understand.. If interested, there seems to be at least one commercial farmer, who went no-till for various reasons with lots of success. If I remember right, his name is Gabe Brown. He shows what can help for long root crops too, I guess (have seen so much by now). Also "teaming with microbes" book is interesting, as is "Soil and diverse cover crops" and "Life in the soil" on YT. I have to admit, for me it's mainly theories as of today (am working on it), but I really think it's valid information and therefore important prepper knowledge.

+Josh Lukowicz We shall see. I used to think that about craftsman riding mowers, I had one for years that never had an issue and then it died. What did I do? I went and spent quite a lot and bought a brand new one. It was the biggest piece of crap I had ever owned (at that time, I have had a cub cadet that was even a bigger piece of crap since then) I think you either get a good one or a bad one and I am hoping this one is good. Thanks Josh. Stay tuned. Joe

JoeandZachSurvival There is one brand i can speak highly of, Airens. Every year for the passed 15-18 years I till my garden with an Airens front tine tiller. The only issue that tiller has given was the carburetor had to be rebuilt last year. Hands down the best machine I've ever owned.
