The New Wave of British Heavy Metal really put the Newcastle area on the Metal map. Tygers of Pan Tang are from the area, Raven, Satan, Venom. I call them the 'Newcastle Big Four' and each are totally different - hinting at the directions that Metal would take in the future. Venom especially - definitely the big outlier - they would push Extreme Metal more than any other band of the early 80s. Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal - all of these wouldn't be quite the same without the impact of these bands.

I understand the potential provocative nature of this comment, but I for one never liked Saxon nearly as much as other NWOBHM bands. There are good reasons they never broke in the U.S. Childish lyrics, weak production, second-rate musicianship, cringe videos. They always seemed a couple steps behind. Their stuff over the past 15 years is far superior IMO.

I think that Def Leppard - On Through the Night captures the sound of NWOBHM better than any other of the popular albums of the era. Sledgehammer, Ethel the Frog, Sabre, Persian Risk , Mythra, Gaskin , Incubus, EF Band ( Sweden relocation) , Incubus, Trespass, Geddes Axe ,Millennium, Syar, Black Axe , Paralex all sound closer to early Def Leppard than anything else available on LP or EP. If aliens visited Earth and asked what NWOBHM sounded like I would have to play them either Millennium - the Devil Rides Out , Def Leppard - Answer to the Master, or Geddes Axe - Gods of Rock . Arguably NWOBHM was what truly marked the beginning of music becoming as important as Vocals in Hard Rock or Metal subgenres of Rock music

Martin from Newcastle here, who was 16 in 1982. The hub of NWOBHM is Saxon. Listening to your chat here, I'd say that Def Leppard stood outside of the genre because they were considered to be wanting to 'break' America and their music was considered softer in the UK. Satan were not on the radar at all. Tygers of PanTang is a good choice. Saxon, in those early days, were exactly what you are looking for. Strong Arm of the Law and Wheels of Steel are NWOBHM. Diamondhead are also worth a mention, from a UK perspective. Again, Tokyo Blade just not in the conversation.

I am 63 years old and since 1979 I have followed NWOBHM intensely. I was a regular subscriber to Sounds and Kerrang!! In fact the essence of NWBHM came and went very quickly, perhaps genuinely from 79 - 82. Sounds, Kerrang!!, Metal For Muthas, Reading Festival, Neat & Heavy Metal Records, Marquee Club, Neal Kay and The Bandwagon, but the Things started to stop being more underground and become more mainstream. In the USA came the Metal Massacre series and a movement of hair bands, heavy metal bands proliferated around the world. In my opinion, some bands represented the essence of the movement Iron Maiden (with Paul Di´Anno and Clive Burr) Samson (with Bruce Bruce) Def Leppard (On Through The Night), Dark Star, Trespass, White Spirit, Venon, Holocaust, Angel Witch, Saxon , Blitzkrieg, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Vardis, Praying Mantis, Whitchfynde, WitchFinder General, Demon (two first albums), Diamond Head, Girlschool, Girl, Rock Goddes, More, Tank, Raven, Fist, AIIZ, Jaguar, Bitches Sin . .etc It's almost impossible to name just 5 albums, but I would use the criterion that which ones came first were actually the most important albums. Metal For Muthas (compilation) Iron Maiden - First Angel Witch - First Saxon - Wheels of Steel Tygers of Pan Tang - Wild Cat

You could relate the three major themes of heavy metal to realms in Norse mythology. Asgard, Midgard, and Nifelheim. Asgard would be epic metal bands with concepts based in war, history, literature, and mythology. (Hammerfall, Sabaton, Bruce era Iron Maiden, Manowar) Midgard would be bands with a more "down to earth" or blue collar vibe. ( The Rods, old Riot, 80s Saxon, Def Leppard, Tygers of Pan Tang) Nifelheim would be the bands with darker concepts , more horror and occult themes. (Venom, Angel Witch, early Stormwitch, the first two Running Wild)

However, I think it's a mistake to omit Saxon and "Power and the Glory" from this list. Along with "The Number of the Beast" this is the two seminal albums of the genre and Maiden and Saxon are without a doubt the two most important bands. Besides those two, for sure Satans debut needs to be on a list like this and I would take the debuts from Diamond Head and Savage as well.

I would add Angelwitch, probably the best damn NWOBHM ever and that Witchfinder General album just because that cover got the genre some heavy press coverage in the UK. I also think single Take on The World by Priest was the precursor to what was to come. In the UK the song came out of nowhere to reach the top 20. It was so heavy and less than a year later Geoff Barton coined the phrase that brought in the genre

Interesting how you suggest that 'Satan' as a band name was not going to appeal to the masses. I'm sure that was true in most of the US, but I doubt if it was any barrier in the UK - they just weren't as good as other NWOBHM bands. Same reason that no-one in the UK was talking about backmasking in Judas Priest records and the name Black Sabbath was probably a help rather than a hindrance in the early days (to the UK 'masses' even if it did cause worry in record company head offices)

I really enjoyed this, even though I don't know that I quite understand the specifications of the topic. A good illusration of what you guys were saying last week, about us all hearing things differently -- never thought there was anything wrong with the sound of that early Maiden stuff and definitely wouldn't describe the first album as "cavernous" -- it's a very dry, clean sound...yeah it's not martin Birch, but you get that on the second album -- way crunchier and a heaviness that really brings their sound into the 80s. newer Satan stuff is far better sounding than Court in the Act, production-wise, in my opinion. They really found a good balance when they came back of keeping it raw but being a lot clearer and less messy-sounding than their classic debut. Even the earlier demo stuff sounds better than that record in my opinion. But that's Neat Records for you.

Hello chaps, runnlng a bit behind. Good discussion, my thoughts are that maiden and satan are on the spokes not youre hub. Maiden's first two albums are as you say yourselves derived from punk . Similar to the french band trust, satan are speed metal or early thrash. The other three are more in the melodic rock/metal, i think other choices could be as follows; Praying mantis,Diamond Head or Persian Risk. You could even throw in Samson. thanks for the shows, many times over.

How about Dark Star? Underrated album.

I like the British sound; raw and pure, almost demo like where you can hear the tone of instruments, amps and maybe even some of the environment. I don't understand why an album has to have that kind of produced or even bombastic sound to have "great production". Maybe that's more of an American thing where nwobhm ends; bands or people behind them trying to break the US. That being said, for me early Saxon up to and including the first live album (1979-1982) is on top of the list!

Suggestion for next week: Speed vs. Thrash discussion?

For me it depends on the singer in the thrash band. Bands like Vio Lence and Death Angel didn't do anything for me because of the singer
