To address some of your concerns about The Resentment's familiar ability, "conditions" are discrete effects in PF2. There is a conditions appendix in the CRB on pages 618-623 (according to AoN; too busy to redownload the pdf right now). Using the Synesthesia example, it would only extend the clumsy 3 because it's the only part of the spell that is a condition. Also, it would not (usually) affect conditions like prone or sickened, because they do not use durations. I did however find a possibly overpowered combo: IF you can get an enemy "stunned for 1 round" they can be locked out of the fight as long as the Witch and their familiar can maintain it. Luckily, every effect on the occult spell list that can stun for a round also has the incapacitation trait. I think another balancing factor is that, against intelligent enemies, doing this will make at least the familiar a high priority target. After looking into it, I'm not sure if it's overpowered or not. I'd need to see some actual play. At any rate, I hope this was helpful and not more confusing! Keep up the great work!
@7heHierarch
@7heHierarch Жыл бұрын
"Stunned for one round" doesn't actually even make sense. Stunned always has an associated value and lasts until you regain actions. That's an oversight in Color Spray as far as I can see So technically I don't believe Stunned even has a duration. Edit: I double checked this and I'm wrong very rarely it does have a duration which just means you cannot act at all until the duration is complete
@marshallharck
@marshallharck Жыл бұрын
@@7heHierarch Even then, I believe it would act like "Enemy Stunned 3" -> "Witch extends" -> "Enemy Stunned 4" -> "Enemy turn starts, Stunned 1" -> "Witch extends" -> "Enemy Stunned 2" -> "Enemy turn starts, no longer stunned". Which is definitely powerful, but not locking the enemy completely out of the turn every round.

According to some online folks, you can Cast a Spell even if a target. Which sounds like a metagamey way of Sustaining a non-hex effect. Not sure if I fully agree. It sounds like legalistic pedantry.
@DakonBlackblade2
@DakonBlackblade2 Жыл бұрын
@@7heHierarch Stunned can have no associated value and instead have a duration, in which case the target loses all their actions for the duration. This skill is not OP because familiars are super fragile, everything involving your familiar will have a risk reward factor, you are exposing your familiar and it might get killed. It works kind the same with animal companions for example, they aren't really very good at staying alive so the player needs to be smart about how they position and utilize their abilities.
@7heHierarch
@7heHierarch Жыл бұрын
@@marshallharck the ability specifically says it "only extends conditions with a timed duration (such as 1 round or "until the end of your turn")" So you could only extend Stunned if it was a version of Stun with a duration rather than an associated value.
@Zedrinbot

I suspect the intention for the Resentment is that it extends the effects of the hex specifically, not simply any and all conditions affecting the target. Alternatively as someone else said, if I'm wrong and it does affect all conditions, it'd only affect conditions that have an actual duration so it wouldn't affect things like prone.
@TheRulesLawyerRPG

ADDITIONS/ERRATA: -The Resentment's familiar ability does not work says it only works against conditions WITH A DURATION, so that allows us to proscribe it to what are classified as Conditions in the book. That addresses some issues but not the MAIN problem: making a foe Clumsy 3 for an entire fight after it SUCCEEDS on its save, by spamming hex cantrips, seems very strong. Also, Blinded and Stunned are conditions that can be imposed on some spells' successful saves. (And the Resentment extends ALL conditions, not just one.) The heightened Sleep spell has incap and requires a failure, but can impose the Unconscious condition. -The counter-play is to kill the familiar, however! It would kind of lead to the dynamic we see in 5e fights, where the hurting the caster to break their Concentration becomes part of the meta. We'll see if this leads to fun in play and is less broken in practice... Which might mitigate it... but still not balance it against the other Patrons imo. It still seems much more powerful than the abilities from the other Patrons. A conditional Frightened 1 when your Familiar is concealed is decidedly less strong than the ability to impose Clumsy 3, Blinded, Slowed, Unconscious, and Stunned for an entire combat. -Spirit Familiar and Stitch Familiar are the FAMILIAR using the 2 actions. So it only costs the Witch ONE action to Command the familiar to do it! -Witch's Bottle is already in the Advanced Player's Guide and I'd just never read it before lol! But you can be more flexible with it now, with how recovering Focus Points works. -Jason Bulmahn says it very quickly in the stream, but if you want to craft a Common item, no formula is required. No inference necessary! Thanks to the commenter who pointed this out!

I think a mild frustration I have with the remaster is how it really is an opportunity to make the game easier and more expressive for new players by condensing or combining more features and activities. Hell, a majority of the Player’s Core 1 is casters, and the rigid spellcasting is kinda frustrating for some players. I love the new features and language changes across the board. They emphasized the “Rumpelstiltskin Principle” where naming a thing can give clarity and story, and they’re doubling down on that hardcore here. Love it.

@@jackthepres There is a pretty old school organized spellcasting method of Vancian casting, where each Spell you have is fixed and prepared. So in those prepared cases if you have three 2nd Rank Spells, you list out those three ahead of time. And then learning the same spell at different Ranks for some spellcasters must be learned separately. So if you know a 2nd Rank summon undead spell, you don’t automatically know a 1st or 3rd Rank version. I also kinda just hate Vancian magic (the organized spell levels / ranks system), and kinda wish more magic felt like magical powers you just know (the psychic and kineticist classes are pretty good at giving this fantasy). It kinda reminds me of how many “How to Play [Fictional magical character] in D&D!” videos are kinda trash since these games use a spellcasting system that doesn’t feel like actual superpowers or supernatural abilities.

I think the thing about Synethesia and Slow is that they are some of the only debuff spells that function against boss fights. While the encounter building rules are good, it does seem like there is a trend in the community to perceive an encounter with a single enemy to be much harder than one with many lower level enemies. There are TONS of AoE spells that allow spellcasters to specifically counter group fights, how many single target spells are there that are effective against boss fights? They basically have to have no incap and a potent success effect to make the cut, which makes for a very short list. Nerfing Slow and Synethesia to have incap would further widen the gap between solo and group fights and make the encounter balance system less accurate. If anything we need MORE spells designed to counter bosses so that players have more choice within that space, then you could nerf Synethesia (but not by giving it incap, incap should only go on AoE's imo, maybe remove the flat checks).

The sheer difference in action economy mean I usually see a small group of enemies (2-3) be a harder fight than a singular boss. A group of 5 players has 15 actions per round, and a single boss only has 3. This makes it super easy to stack debuffs and conditions to simply annihilate the boss as long as good teamwork is being used. A group of 3 monsters would have a total of 9 actions vs the party’s 15 thus making for a tougher fight. Groups of 5, 6, or more creatures end up being really quick however and get mowed through.

I see the logic, but I don't think it makes sense to have a fair chance to defeat a campaign-ending Level 23 or 24 villain with a 5th-rank spell slot and hex cantrips. When put next to similar spells and how PF2 has balanced them, Slow and Synesthesia come off as oversights. As I say in my now-pinned comment, the counterplay is to kill the familiar or the witch! Which might mitigate it... but still not balance it against the other Patrons imo. It still seems much more powerful than the abilities from the other Patrons. My big issue with the wizard schools is sure it's flavorful, but I want my flavor to come with strengths, not just limitations. For example, Battle Mage doesn't make you a BETTER blaster, it just forces you to blast at the same effectiveness as everyone else, which kinda kills the flavor of the subclass imo. I think a neat idea to give the wizard subclasses a unique mechanical identity would be to change the way their curriculum spells work in a unique way. So you could have every subclass have a "curriculum augmentation" that only applies when using the curriculum spell slots (so you couldn't get the benefit by preparing spells in your curriculum in non curriculum slots or scrolls/wands). For example, a lot of the damage spells the Battle Mage has access to become total wastes once you reach a high enough level that even your cantrips outdamage them. To make the Battle Mage feel more like a blaster caster you could give them this ability: "You may use your Curriculum spells as though they are heightened to a spell rank equal to your max spell rank - 2". Not sure if it's balanced but the idea is to sell flavor with STRENGTHS, not just weaknesses.

To me the 1e* Paizo witch class was the absolute poster-child for splitting feats (and class features) into two radically different categories -> power and flavour. Then you give everyone N power feats (over the course of 20 levels) and M flavour feats (over the course of 20 levels). Another example (not to pick on Paizo) would be 5e's cooking feat. That'd be _great_ as a flavour (sic) feat, but if you put it into a general pool with all other feats suddenly it's competing with things like +10 damage to all your attacks - multiple times per round, or 'hey, that spell damage type you invested heavily in? Yeah, enemies don't get resistance to that anymore'. *I don't know much about 2e, because it just _hurts_ to look at it. Dead levels everywhere, casters all get different charts (not sure if it changed at some point, they seem a lot more standardised than I remember, but I do remember thinking they could just save 10-12 pages in the rulebook if they didn't dick around with giving class X feature Y at 12th level and giving the exact same feature Y to class Z at 13th level. Grokking 1 or 2 charts (maybe even 3 if we standardise half-casters) is way better than having to grok 20 different charts. So it seems like a couple of steps forward, a bunch of steps back, and a whole lot of skipping sideways. I don't wish them ill (more variety is a good thing, vive la revolucion and all that jazz), but I'm sad they clearly didn't learn (or forgot) the lesson they taught everyone else with 3.75 (maybe those designers moved on to other things in the meantime?), and I'm not heartbroken that nobody I know is playing 2e PF.

So the witch is potentially committing precious feats towards focus spells to have more focus spells. The familiar must be within 15 feet (3 squares), so the witch would have to either be close themselves, or spend actions commanding the familiar to get into range itself. Or add adjustments to the spell, like for example I have some key rules set aside for teleportation circle and teleportation! [currently my key rules for teleportation circle is the circle can only send you to other circled locations, that you are self knows of! Now for basic teleport it requires for you to 1 not be hindered or pinned, second you need to attach it to said item like a staff or something and you can only teleport within a range of 20 to 30 feet depending on your power level[ ignoring the thickness of an object] without setting up a relay antenna. Hence why I created the spell teleportation totem which is you spend time creating a totem place it upon your path and you can teleport to that totem so long as it's attuned to you're staffed or object that you have listed as your teleportation device! Also if your device is destroyed at any point or the totems you cannot use them.][I totally did not steal this from Star Trek][he said sarcastically] also I really love the nephilim new flavor set up because, now we can have that awkward romantic story: the mother" well young Virgil I met your father on upon a battlefield when he slayed the evil demon to save me." Virgil." but he's a demon too and yet your Angel what does this mean?" look there are some things that they'll make devilcry remake did that I find very much more interesting! Yet they will never touch on because in the regular continuity there are no such things as angels. Or is there Bayonetta?

Regarding the Resentment and having read comments: -There is a specific appendix for conditions. Only the conditions listed would be affected by raw. -Slowed 1, Stunned 1, and anything that is just listed as Condition # without including a duration is not affected. Conditions like Prone or Grabbed would also not be extended unless the source providing those conditions lists a duration. You cannot extend Stunned 1 but you could extend 'Stunned until the end of their next turn' or 'Slowed 1 for 1 round.' -The value of the condition doesn't increase; for example slowed 1 for 1 round does not become slowed 2.

One thing I'd like to see them fix is the in-game economy. Let me explain; Some kits/sets are poorly priced, the most egregious I've noticed is the adventurer's pack, its contents add up to 8 silver 8 copper while the bundle is 1 gold 5 silver (a full 70% mark-up). There's also the fact 50ft rope and a climbing kit (which contains 50ft rope among other things) are both 5 silver. There's also a Rules issue between crafting and selling. Basically the crafting section says you pay half the base value to make an item, while the downtime section says you can only sell items for half their base value (unless commissioned). So if you craft an item and then sell it you get nothing.

Good question, though I personally know that if I were in-person, I would be using a physical Core book if it were easy to navigate, for certain use cases. To find a specific item I already know the name of, I'd use AON. Looking for a good Level 2 alchemical formula to get at level-up and just wanting a smaller list? I'd use the CRB. Also, the sidebars look useful for when you want to find "Hero Point" rule, etc. since they have their own label. For me that's faster than pulling up my browser and/or finger typing something

As a caster heavy player, I have always felt that in Pathfinder, spell casters are too weak compared to the other types for one reason: Spell resistance. Spells were already a limited resource. No where else have I seen a rule where you have to roll to see if your spell even had a chance of working. I wish I didn't have to waste feats on spell penetration plus those teo vital ranged attack feats. I just doesn't seem fair to me.

Wizards have curriculum spells automatically added to their spellbook AND they get a unique slot at each spell level/rank that can only be used for curriculum spells. Ultimately, you're right some spells are too strong and need to be nerfed. If they bring down synthesia, inner radiance torrent, invis, slow, etc, I worry casters are going to feel even worse to new players. Ultimately, balance doesn't often drive game adoption. Most of these spells are popular because even on success they still do something, so the user feels good.

They are coming in Core 2, probably because they're arguably even more structured around alignment than Clerics are and wanted to give themselves more development time maybe? I hope Wizard has a poaching feat at higher levels to yoink another college's focus spell, since they're locked in at 2 max presently. Also, the "universalist" wizard is the "school of unified magic" which is the backmost entry in the college area, and thus was not previewed during the stream. I was sad to not see stamina in the variant rules area, especially considering that SF2 is going to be PF2 compatible, and SF1 has HP/Stamina as a baked in rule; this makes me think either PF2 is switching to HP/Stamina, SF2 is dropping it, or SF2 will have rules on imposing HP/Stamina on PF2 and vice versa. Also ability/skill points (point buy) also seems to have died, and I'm a little sad about that, but it seemed like an uncommon variant to use, so it makes sense.

There currently is Universal Versatility, which I'm guessing they're going to keep in the Remaster: 2e.aonprd.com/Feats.aspx?ID=649 There are quite a few variant rules that are not included here, including Ability Score Variants, Ancestral Paragon, Skill Points, etc. Also, pre-published stuff officially is NOT ruled out with the Remaster. When SF2 releases its four(?) "table legs" including a GM Core eventually, maybe Stamina will be re-introduced there?

They should change Halo to be something a bit more general imo. Since a nephilim technically could be from any background, a fiendish nephilim could wreathe their body in fire that gives off light, etc. Calling it a 'halo of light and goodness' makes me think it hasn't fully transitioned to the new heritage yet. Also to comment about giving spells the incapacitation trait, I think Hideous Laughter should have it as well. It's not bad if they succeed, but if they fail they're slowed 1. You can sustain it to infinity. There is no limitation to how long it can be sustained. In a small boss encounter, this could legitimately mean that a 2nd level spell could permanently slowed 1 a boss (since you can sustain a spell up to 10 minutes before suffering consequences). It's honestly baffling that this spell doesn't have the incapacitate trait.

I extrapolate what Level someone would need to be able to succeed with Assurance, and charge 200% what their Earn Income amount would be. It ends up not being a whole lot. I once had to move my demented grandpa and let me tell you it was not easy at all when he resisted, but when he was mostly just lying there it required effort, and I was a pretty scrawny pubescent boy, moving a man who was a bit fat, which means that moving a person who is just lying there, should be a cakewalk for a powerful hero, even IF the PC lying there is loaded with a bunch of gear.

A caster being overpowered? Sure, sounds good! Edit: I can understand wanting to touch down Slow and Synthesthesia, but I don't think they ought to. Touch up bad spells? Yeah, for sure. Staple Incapacitation on to a single-target spell (the latter of the two), effectively giving it a 50% chance (assuming it's equal chances of the 4 degrees, not dramatically weighted towards success) of doing fuck all? IMO that sounds like trading the 'really good spell' for a different 'really good spell' instead of offering competition.

It is no better than saying dude you can house rule it bro. As whether you have access to it is at the whims of your DM and if you are starting with the remaster like a lot of one D&D transfers a you can buy two sets of core rule books and maybe your DM will let you use it answer does not really work.

the .1 seems perfectly fair to me. It's like programmer speak, where we had "2.0.###" (insert the following numbers with however many erratas were released), and now with the first major update we're going into 2.1.0 Also because so little feels like it actually changed. Alignment is likely going to be the only thing that actually impacts my games, especially since just about everything else hardly had any impact to begin with (like spell schools) or is completely optional (like the revised classes and ancestries). The only reason to call it a "2.5" is because that's what D&D did. One time. Hardly much of a precedent to set, and especially since the whole point of this revision to break away from D&D tradition.
