This will be a massive success. The world is hungry for more air cargo capacity, and there is about to be a flood of cheap 777-300er aircraft available for conversion. I’m excited to watch the program grow and mature.

The last years have shown how successful converted freighters are and how high the demand for them is. With some 777-300ERs now sadly retired I could imagine that many will have a future life as a freighter!

I think the only competition this could have is an a350-9 or 10 freighter! The problem with airbus is that those would be new or almost new and thus the purchasing price would be waaay higher (not sure if the fuel save makes sense for less than 10 years or not).

The 777 is the perfect aircraft to start replacing the aging MD-11 fleets @ both UPS and FedEx. FedEx has already started its process buying 777F direct from Boeing, curious if either company will show interest in this converter.

I work for FedEx and the 777 isn’t a suitable replacement for the MD-11. There isn’t an aircraft on the market that’s capable of replacing the MD-11 yet. 777 is too big for the parking slots the 767 and MD-11 fit in. At LAX we only have 1 gate capable of accommodating the 777 and ONT has 2 gates.

If this conversion get successful then Boeing will use this idea for higher capacity 777-300ER freighter since 777x has certification problems and delays. How many retired 777-300ERs are sitting in bone yards right now? I know Delta retired their 777 fleet last year. Not sure of the mix of variants they flew though. Etihad and Air New Zealand are retiring their 777s this year as well. I think this program will make the resale value of these frames go up significantly

The number will increase in the next few years with the start of production of the 777X, where airlines will begin retiring their -300ER’s (a bulk of which will come from Emirates). But since there aren’t too many on the after market right now, they still have a decent resale cost as opposed to the 747-400.
@StratMatt777
@StratMatt777 3 жыл бұрын
Delta had no -300 models. I suspect that not having the -300's seat-mile cost advantages made it pretty easy for Delta to retire the -200s. The A350 burns 21% less fuel than Delta's 777-200ERs

Converting the 300ER could work, with quite a few reaching the end of their career as passenger planes. With good maintenance an aircraft can fly much longer than the manufacturers suggest, although it’s rare to see an aircraft that exceeds the average life span by many years. These conversions don’t have to fly for another 30 years like a new freighter could. After all, they’re a lot cheaper so even operating them for around 15 years is profitable!

Does not make any good sense to me. There is a good reason why cargo operators chose the 747 four engine aircrafts, its because the weights of cargoes vary from low tons to extremely high tons. With a four engine aircraft freighters can compensate for this when loading high tonnage. The 777-300 can't compensate for this with its two engines initially ment for passenger use.

It might change something, but I'm not sure with the payload 777 300ERSF can carry compare to its space With MTOW for most 77W 351,534 kgs / 775000 lbs, After transfer from pax to freighter, its DOW should be around 160Tons We are looking at a payload around 90~100 Tons, which 77F can carry up to 105~105.5 ton. The only time it wins 77F is carry light cargo with large volume.........

I think that's why they call it SF (special freighter) because usually cargo airplane are already at max payload in smaller cabin (-200 series) because cargo is much more dense compared to people and luggage. Longer fuselage versions means less weight for payload for about the same total authorized weight. This version is at max efficiency for less dense cargo, but can still be intesting for normal cargo depending of capital cost and availability of aircrafts.
@StratMatt777

@@12345fowler But you have to pay for the fuel to haul the useless extra fuselage (and there is a lot). Saudi Arabian's 1999 777-200ERs are for sale right now. Better to buy them and have IAI do this retrofit on them. The -300 would be more fun as a "Zero G" airplane though! :)

Why not a 777-300 combi like the 747 combi? 2 less engines but just as much capacity.

Yep 777-300ERs have very good cargo abilities. However this is another nail in the 747 coffin.

Not necessarily, the 747 can carry heavier cargo with larger volumes. It’s also easier to load 747s with these large volume cargoes thanks to the nose door.

There is a very good reason UPS bought up the last few 747's coming off the line. They're better and cheaper to operate than, even this 777. The 747 freighters will probably outlast the 777 freighters.

@@spongebubatz Yes, it will take a lot longer than 130 days if the engineering stress analysis for that big cargo door had not been. More like 2 years.

I am lucky enough to have both 777 and 747-400 type rating. Sadly 747 is going away. 777 is just too efficient.

Boeing should have designed a 777-300F from the get go.

I was thinking the same thing, but after analyzing everything it’s simple. A 773F would have competed directly with the 748F. Makes sense to do it just the way they did. Discontinue the 748 THEN move forward with 778F or dare I say a 779F... A 77XF along with a 773SF are going to change the game.
