Here's some fun trivia for you. The "Hall of Justice" was modeled after the Cincinnati Museum Center (Union Terminal). It is still here and if you ever visit, be sure to check it out. It's a gorgeous place.

If only… DC had printed the Showcase volumes in color instead of black and white. Even for a few dollars more.

I loved the Showcase and Essentials volumes. I wish they had continued them. All the new stuff is cost prohibitive but the others were an inexpensive way to read all that classic material.😊
@spaceknight7934 күн бұрын
Of all the series, Showcase Batman should have continued. At least until 1983 when the new Robin appears.

The Swamp Thing Omnibus is my pick out of the volumes you showed Michael - it's a superb collection of exceptional material including the much-neglected Martin Pasko/Tom Yeates issues that kicked off the second series. You're right about Aquaman, he has been around for a long time yet not much has ever been done with him; even the murder of his son by Black Manta, an incident which should have reverberated around the superhero community, seems to have been pushed into the background.

Early, early 70s I stumbled across a couple of very-used Green Lantern comics (like issue #6 and the like!) with torn covers ect. That omnibus volume would be worth it; the comics were fun! Likewise an omnibus of the Golden Age Flash.

I'm a DC guy from way back. The DC's Finest and the DC Compact Comics (at 9.99 for the budget-minded reader) are both wonderful new initiatives. Crisis in and of itself was fantastic. DC editorial messed up the follow through. Perez's Wonder Woman was my gateway into DC post-Crisis. I have been inspired by your Marvel project and will be reading all of the Silver Age Green Lantern through the end of the volume (including the retitled The Green Lantern Corps run). Thanks, as always, for your inspiration and your always enjoyable videos. Happy New Year, Michael!

that Wonder Woman series is really good. He honored the characters that had come before, and increased the scope of her story and the stakes. By having Perez draw it, you get a lot more detail on the buildings and the characters than you would get with any penciller today.

Currently reading Superman: Exile omnibus and really enjoying it. I agree with you on the John Byrne stuff though. I think they could have done a soft reboot with a new #1 and it could have worked out better for the character. They wanted Superman to be the last son of krypton so badly that they swept his continuity out the door, but then made him unattached and uninterested in his birth planet. I mean, kandor was pretty much out of the picture, and Supergirl had just died. He pretty much was alone anyway. I do think that bringing back ma and pa was a good move, but I was even reading one issue where Superman was thinking to himself that his Kryptonian parents only gave him life, but that ma and pa gave him love. I love ma and pa, but what do you think Jor-El and Lara were doing when they put baby Kal on a ship to save him from Krypton? That’s love! Why make those silly distinctions anyway? Who knows. Excited for the upcoming movie though!

I honestly think that DC (Marvel too, although it would be less beneficial) should reprint at least SOME books as general anthologies, with large samples of characters in them. Like a real SHOWCASE series but with reprints. Get you a big batch of whatnot for ten bucks. Sounds good.

I was actually surprised that buy sales listings on Amazon, the DC Finest collection has done very well, but particularly Superman, Batman, The Legion, The Flash, and Wonder Woman in that order. The Legion of Superheroes outsold Wonder Woman and The Flash. I thought that was strange.

Cor.. that's a stack of chunky DC books. I got a kick out of the inclusion of some Showcase books, for some dopey reason they make me smile when I see people enjoying them, have a few myself, I like black and white comics.. and no, the All-Star Comics JSA stories have never been reprinted since the DC Archives. My comic reading plan for 2025 is pulpy, vintage, and littered with golden age heroes. Started today with one of my favourites, The Rocketeer, great comic inspired by pulp adventure cinema serials I loved watching.

When I was a kid I was more of a DC fan than a Marvel one. I was just be contrary to the majority of kids in my school. I was actually treated as a weirdo for prefer it. I think Marvel sold better but I think DC may have had the better writing at the time. (Marvel was better in the 60s though.) I've been reading old Flash comics on the DC app and they are a lot of fun. Wonder Woman despite being a character that has been around forever doesn't seem to have a lot of notable runs. The Perez one seems to be an exception. The Showcase Presents are good hunting down if you like obscure characers. (There's no real reason to get major characters in those formats when you can get DC's Finest and Omnibuses.) For lesser known characters they are great. I first read Bob Haney's Metamorpho in those. I turned it in to the used bookstore only because a DC's Finest volume is coming out. I found that comic to be a hidden gem of the Silver Age. It was to a certain degree a parody of the Lee/Kirby Marvel. Haney would take shots at the big M in his comics. (He was actually an admirer of Marvel and one of the first to see it would be major competition to DC.)

Crisis made it possible for DC to get new readers. Some of the characters who were killed were really in the doldrums before the event, especially The Flash,. The Wally West version was a lot more lively and the post Final Crisis relaunch of Barry Allen Flash was better.
