About the industry system in Korea, it is definitely true that there is a lot of problematic parts of it and that it often works very young adults/teens or even children way too hard, but I would advice to take a lot of western media's coverage of it with a little grain of salt, whether it's from "traditional" media or social media. They love to focus in on the darkest parts of it or even very specific events or companies and paint the whole industry with the same brush. It has become a bit of a game of telephone, where they keep repeating slowly worsening versions of how the industry looked 10 years ago, refusing to acknowledge that it has changes significantly in many aspects. There is undisputedly more work to be done, but much of the coverage makes it sound way more gloomy and hopeless.

It’s not only Western media though. I have just watched a k-drama which was entirely centred around the various toxic aspects of the k-pop/idol/trainee industry (not exempting toxic fan behaviour!)
@Annaonesun
@Annaonesun 2 жыл бұрын
@@butterbuttersbetter3689 I am a lot more inclined to take criticism againt the Korean entertainment industry seriously when it comes from Korean media, but I've also watched a few recent k-dramas about fictional idols that seem to be very stuck on how the industry looked like back in 2013 or so. Of course, as an outsider I'll never know what the industry truly looks like on the inside and I don't doubt that there is a lot of terrible and exploitative stuff happening even today, especially in smaller companies, but k-dramas about the idol industry probably wouldn't be very interesting if they made it less dramatic lol. But I guess my point is that western media loves to kinda "demonise" and "other" the k-pop industry and k-media in a way k-media doesn't really do to itself, at least not to the same extent, while fully pretending like the western entertainment world isn't just as bad. (Also, as a k-drama addict, I'm very curious which drama you watched. Wondering if ive seen it or if it's something that i should put on my to watch list)

Muscle memory is the act of committing a specific motor task into memory through repetition. While your muscles themselves can’t actually remember anything, they are full of neurons attached to your nervous system that play a role in motor learning. Any movement requires brain activity, and repeating a movement, even complicated ones, enough times triggers recognizable patterns in your brain regions responsible for motor skills. Thus leading to a learned motion that will require less brainpower in the future.

I kind of like what they did with the intro - it's almost a cacophony of voices and opinions, most of which are definitely true to an extent. I feel like the focus here was one of the big questions that's asked all the time ("is BTS' success due to them being part of the K-Pop industry, despite of it, or because they did something radically different?"). Imo, you could argue for all three, depending on what you think defines the industry - did it start with Seo Taiji and Boys and their socio-critical music, or with Lee Sooman's ideas of cultural technology, and trying to create the perfect idols to step into the void they left behind? Btw, since you mentioned the VICE documentary: There is a really great two-part breakdown of that one on YT, by the channel "bby gang mag". They look at what the documentary does narratively, and where it falls short - the videos are called "the media is wrong about k-pop" and "k-pop vs. orientalism: no more than a machine". Especially the second part, I feel like, is incredibly well-made and definitely worth a watch. Oh yeah, and nobody should "stan" corporations, that's just ... weird. The idols that we're watching are workers, and should be supported against unfair labour practices, like everyone else.

@@Psynergic That's cool! I follow a bit of what Elliot (the guy who writes/presents the videos) does, and since putting out those videos, he's become more ... idk, cynical about the topic of change in the industry and fan culture? But imo they still hold up, and he does a good job of not playing devil's advocate for the things the VICE doc criticised. Also, the editing is funny as hell. Loved your reaction, young Bangtan are adorable :D they have this awkward sincerity that's just really touching.

26:50 nice catch bc that's practically the exact reason why Bang PD said he established Big Hit Entertainment. He essentially stated that he made his own label bc he got angry with how the industry was operating, how it was passing over talent and hard-work to cater to connections and money. And he has a really good relationship with the guys. He encourages the members to gain life experience so that it'd help with their music and the label allows them to work on projects outside of both the label and the grp (every member has solo projects unrelated to BTS, as a brand, and/or their label). During the transition when Hybe was established as a parent company and BTS's label rebranded as a subsidiary under it (Big Hit Music), Bang PD ensured that their label remained independent and that the artists' creative rights wouldn't be impeded on.

The Members used to dress up as woman a lot, so you're not kinda wrong, lul. Watch the Bonus and Deleted Scenes to see them in female Cosplay and owning it. J Hope and Jimin sometimes wear skirts and female coded designer shirts because they like it, and putting gender on clothing is weird anyway. The Person who edits the Videos is an OG ARMY and a Hollywood Editor, she worked on the recent Batman Movie. She kinda risked her Mental Health for the Series, because it got so Popular and the Schedule was really tight, but this Series is non-commercial and Hobby to her, but she is taking a break and does it on her own time. It's cut and edited in a way that people can upload it to KZbin, it's rare that this Series gets blocked all big channels go through with it.

BTS were so hungry to succeed. They put up with a lot because they were so motivated. There are a lot of things about the "dark side of kpop" out there, but I feel like a lot of it has been overblown. Are there companies that are terrible? Yes. Did BTS' company make mistakes especially in the early years? Also yes, but I also feel that they learned from those mistakes. Their idols don't have trainee debt and they did try to do the right thing. Suga was working a part time job during his trainee days because he needed money to pay for school. He was hit by a car while doing that job and hurt his shoulder really bad. He didn't tell the company because he was afraid that they'd let him go, but when they found out they asked why he didn't say anything and offered to pay for his school. So many of the "dark side of kpop" narratives come out of SM, JYP, and YG. Some of the hard work that they do seems harsh to us, but wouldn't be that harsh by Korean standards. You'll see in future episodes that it starts with their education system and just continues on into their jobs. It is part of their culture. They are always promising to work harder. I don't see how they can work harder, but they still promise it to this day. I guess it's good that they don't just sit on their laurels now that they are successful and just coast. They work insanely hard to continue to improve. It is impressive.

What would never stop amazing me about this first episode of this documentary is the editing in Choi Siwon's part. When he was talking about a rising superstar in future, no way did he or anyone ever thought that it would come from a small near bankrupt agency rather than his juniors or other Big 2. No one saw BTS coming, not even BTS ( maybe just Bang PD 😂)

I like Big Hit (Music)/Hybe. They are mostly good. What the managers did for them is incredible. They can also call Bang "hyung" and BTS is very proud of that. Hybe is proud of being authentic and despite being cooperate they also style themselves as a family even when a lot of money is involved. A perfect example is the Kim Garam of Le Sserafim case. The group has just debuted. As soon as she was introduced bullying allegations came up. There were a lot of questionable statements and photographs: a real campaign. She is 16. The only thing that is based on some fact happened in 2018 (when she was 12). Than she and some friends confronted another girl and became verbally abusive as she had taken a photo of another girl changing and posted it on social media via a foreign account. Garam got a level 5 punishment and that usually counts as very high consindering her age but not for physical violence. The other girl had called the school commitee on them. Before that girl could be punished - and probably thrown out of the school/forcefully transfered - she left voluntary and so has no record (that would have been destroyed when she came offage) Garam was punished with a few lessons and got relatively easy of for a level that high (which is usually bound to other numbers for physical violence) so the mother didn't fight it which she now regrets. With the attacks the company made a statement that Garam is innocent and sued some of the allegations. That first girl? Seeing the Online hate she refused to go to school and said that it would only end if she died (she was disbelieved - and there seems to be a fight between friends groups or so it is said). The mother of that girl is sueing. The label is now talking to the lawyers because everyone involved is underage - I think. Garam had to be taken from her debut duties as she is getting hate from fans. Any other company would have Garam fired because of it. But they are defending her/trying to solve the issue - without ruining anyone's life (lets face it: they are all 3 only about 16) This is just one example in how I think they are different (Scooter Braun is not liked but he also told an interesting story of how Bang aquired his label and how he made social bonds first before coming down to business). It is not surprising that Jin looks tired: he is doing double duty learning from scratch of how to be an Idol (singing/dancing) and also at an acting program at university (+ help taking care of especially JK and also on occasionaly (at least) cooking for the others). Jimin is by the way a hypocrate. He also barely slept during training (2 - 3 hours a night or so; short training period) and also went to school. We see here some of the extremes or at least some examples. There is a reason the others gasp in that clip: That was not true for them. Muscle memory as drilling from a young age that things become practicle a reflex and can be built training on (I know that biological memories are stored in the brain). You can see the difference in a lot of things between someone who has worked on it before they hit double digets and those who began in puberty or later. Training from a young age happens for example in certain sports, ballette, boy choirs and classical music. Usually you pay for that training to. A good voice has to be taught or you can destroy it (for example Whitney Houston). Sometimes it costs more than you can afford and you have to burry a dream or pay a very high price to get it. Was there is a problem with the music copyright? I have seen it in other reactions vids but it could have been different for you? Usually there is only a copyright claim (not strike) as it is their music and their money. Thank you for the reaction. You nice! Keep going! 💜

also while the industry does have its issues you will come to realize that a lot of the "dark sides of kpop" are actually societal problems that calling it a kpop issue is actually diminishing the problem and doing nothing to make it better. example dieting within the industry yes its horrible but its something ALL of Korea and many Asian countries part take in to extreme levels and calling it a kpop issue is missing the point. korean beauty standards should be one of the focal points not the kpop industry itself because its found in the makeup, modeling, skin product, sports, music, acting etc almost every industry and those are mostly entertainment related im sure its even in other industries as well as when you see koreans walking the streets theyre all very thin. in my opinion many issues shouldnt be labeled kpop issues and even if they are kpop issues what is the general public of other countries or kpop fans doing to help the situation cause advocating in English doesnt reach korea, gawking and gasping saying how bad it is in English media isnt doing anything to help change anything just pushing people away in a unfair way as all of these issues can be found within the American industries too and yet no one stops completely supporting artists from and industry in america. when all the scandals happen or exposes certain artists, labels industries etc they simply call it a one time thing or ignore it and continue to support the artists. example kesha and dr luke everyone knows what happened there and yet so many artists dr luke writes or produces for still get support so he indirectly gets money. scooter braun with taylor swift. people still support justin bieber ariana grande etc and that helps scooter indirectly. people still watch movies that directors or producers were exposed for being terrible people. so why when it comes to kpop everyone says if you support any artist under any korean label ignoring that not every label is horrible or does the same things and they tell kpop fans "you support slaves, you should ignore korean music, you shouldnt listen ot buy anything cause it helps the industry, they did this and this so all artists should be ignored " etc why does that not apply to american music industry? why does korean artists have to suffer more because of something 1 or 2 labels in their country do? but in the states everyone gets away with even more horrible things and the artists and art itself doesnt lose much audience at all. its very hypocritical the way English speaking people discuss kpop especially bts when bts maybe had 1 or 2 issues that come from society itself not just kpop like dieting and they made the change to stop doing it unhealthy years ago now. they had a curfew and rules when they were still teens but now in 2022 they can do whatever they want and it shows in how unfiltered theyve always been with their fans compared to other groups in kpop. so why do people apply things to bts without research and when armys explain how bts is different they say were naive and brainwash and lying etc instead of caring they just wanna speak badly about kpop but why? it usually comes down to racism xenophobia and fear of bts becoming bigger than american artists which is already the reality. sorry for the rant please react to bbygangmags videos we will watch the reactions we want to see your reactions to these videos :)

If you like learning a little bit and then laughing, you will have fun with this. doing an episode and then the deleted scenes and/or bonus content will be the laughing part. this is also a good way to find songs to react to. Aneesa, the creator of TROB, is a professional video editor and knows how to tell a good story. And she adds little gems in the videos like clips of songs you would probably never know about unless you are OG ARMY, which she is OG ARMY from 2013. The extra content is super funny, because if we didn't know any better, we would think that BTS are comedians. They are just naturally funny, especially when they are together, So the heavier parts of the story will be in the actual 30 minute or so episodes, and then the fun extras will balance that out. Also, remember to take the video to the very end, because she puts gems at the end as well. Looking forward to this journey with you. 💜

the Kpop industry is like a sports industry. your ability has to be to a certain standard and just like in sports they need your body to be at a certain level of fitness and flexibility to keep up with intense choreos and hours long performances. each company has different standards, like JYP needing all his tranees to be able to do basic acrobatics. after debut they usually get eased away from stricter diets and stuff but it is what it is. i don't think its problematic. a lot of these kids want to be there to follow their dreams and if they cant handle it there are other options.

I have experienced the harshness of sports systems. I was a locally famous Weightlifter. Me and my team went to a State wide competition (twice) and it wasn’t the best of times. I remember starving myself to make weight. Working for three years to win a state medal. Just for the harsh and brutal Judges to do everything in their power to stop me from winning my title. Jokes are on them tho I went to a national level meet after and won a title/medal.

4:17 yes Kpop star are highly talented Even more if they are successful I like Elliot’s analysis on corporations are there to make money Elliot used to write video essays But since beginning Bit hits took a different approach Their motto is music for healing So that is that. I think toxic environment doesn’t care with the better method if whatever they are doing brings back a hefty return on investment. What gets big bucks is not the hard work It is whatever third party paid to use such a brand and reputation Is anyone seeing Jerry Maguire ? Artists may live from their craft but big bucks are when brands sell their image

Jimin got so much hate for his baby chubby face for 3 years that he started eating one meal in 10 days to lose the chubby face. He often nose bled while practising for 12+ hours. Now currently he has given up strict diet and is going to gym and bulking out

I guess the key word is "industry", no matter if it's entertainment or sports... Most companies treat them as a mean to get profit and the problem is that they are not objets but people, teenagers, which is kinda scary, tbh. I've read myself to many webtoons focusing on the idol industry and well, some of them are quite a nightmare. You may think that is fiction, but for me art always reflects reality so, there must be some truth behind it... And it's not only Korea, Japan and China too. I personally love BTS, they are my first KPop group and they are all fantastic. Btw, waiting for the moment you start with the ships, Jimkook particularly, hahhaaah

True, I think anything that can be capitalized on tends to deal with its own share of corruption. Doesn't matter where it is (stuff I hear abt kpop reminds me of what goes on in ballet).

Wow, this is a late watch, but if you didn't notice, V (Kim Taehyung) wasn't in this. He was kept secret until they debuted, so he never did any logs until after they released their first MV, which made me sad when I found out, but he was a secret weapon lol. Thanks for the reaction!

Awwww BAP, my first loves 🥹💚😭 that guy you said was cute was Moon JongUp and he’s amazing 🥰 (they had one of the WORST companies ever…literally pulling Daehyun out of the hospital to perform and you could see the bandage on his wrist while he was performing) A good company can make or break a group and BTS were so lucky to have BH…you’d think companies would learn by now…🙄 That said, i think the reason most of us love it when they’re barefaced and show their “less than perfect” sides is cause it’s even more endearing than their “perfect” sides. We love that they’re human. Love your vids and thanks so much for starting this series!!💜💜💜

Thinking over their age separation (Hoseok & Namjoon are 2 years older than Jimin & Taehyung, who are 2 years older than Jungkook), Namjoon would be 19 or 20 here. And yes, he is adorable! Cute 16 year old Kookie grows up to be smoking hot 25 year old JK- if you like muscles & tattoos, he's your type! (My bias is Taehyung/V, but I can appreciate a good looking guy. And they're all unfairly good looking!)

Aneesa, the creator of the series, is currently working on the last two chapters, 22 and 23. (22 is basically done and ready, but she wants to wait till 23 is complete in case she needs to make any changes in her story line.) Just a note about their ages. When they say their age, they are giving their Korean age which is a year or two younger than international age. In Korea, when you are born, you are one. On January 1st, everyone turns a year older. For example, when Taehyung was born December 30th, he was a year old. Two days later he was two. When RM (b. Sept 1994), Jin (b Dec 1992), Jimin (b. Oct 1995), Tae (b. Dec 1995) and Jungkook (b. Sept 1997) give their age I subtract 2 years since they were born towards the end of the calendar year. With Suga (b. March 1993) and J-Hope (b. Feb 1994) I subtract just one year. When RM said he was 20, he would have been 18 in international age. When JK said he was 16, he was 14. (He moved to Seoul to join BigHit and BTS two years before).

Haha, there is nothing wrong with dragging the companies, we love (and some Idols as well) do that with more or less reasonable reasons...you say 99,9% in the West are questionable-shotty well SK alone has like 10000+ in Seoul I once heard so yeah there are def Bands we never get to see, I'd say roughly in the higher 100s every year who either got emotionally and or mentally and physically abused to the point they didn't want to anymore, couldn't stand headteacher or didn't like their company being (short) before broke...don't worry most Kpop Fans hate the system as much as the next one and are completely aware that we kinda support a "upside down slaughterhouse" (They just can't tell me that an average height of 5,74ft and 110lbs are healthy or normal for MALES obviously obsessionally that happens they do had growth spurts in Asia after all too but I ain't no fool and obv it's even worse for the girls who hardly ever go to the 110lbs (50Kg) (yeah I calculated that on my own ones) Also my personal conspiracy theory is that as long as "smoking cigarettes" are a scandal and "dipping the green" prison time illegal (and they still do it, because Artists/Humans?) no one sees the ones who might got hung up on pain killers and other stuff because I doubt there is any Idol that has all the disc where they belong after the age of 21 or maybe 25 . ;)

I kinda don't agree with comparing K-pop with sports. Sports activities usually make you focus on one thing at a time, and you gradually get better at one discipline that you love. K-pop is a mash-up of everything - vocal training sometimes falls back because the group is more choreo-based, and vice versa. Idols have to sing and dance at the same time. Their stamina and the way they're used to breathing are different. P.S Add the totally stupid Korean beauty standards and mentality and you get a whole mess..

I don't like the comparison to athletes that the journalist makes in this. Sure, the physical demands might be similar, but football players and other athletes get way, way more autonomy. They have managers and agents who specifically look out for their best interests, which gives them more leverage when negotiating contracts and other financial matters. And that's not even getting into the issues of no dating and keeping that squeaky clean Kpop image.

Loved your reaction but PLEASE don't mute the songs. The person who made this series put the songs to literally be part of the story and the lyrics many times tell the story and do the mood during the series. And most importantly. It was only one person doing all this work of editing Whis whole series and she is not monetizing while having sush a BIG work on it. And you trying to monetize out of just watching her work.. Idk it feels kinda disrespectful cause we all know the only reason you cut the sound is to monetize the video. And if so many reactors can be respectful and play the video as it is, you should be able to do the same. Was kinda disappointed in you ngl.. :(

Yeah, there's definitely a lot of problems in the kpop world, but the way Western media portrays it is skewed. I mean, as was pointed out, sports have a lot of the same problems, right? But mainstream media doesn't come at it in the same way. Why not? Because of the money, because it's considered "normal" and because it's dominated by men. Sorry, but mocking kpop which is (falsely) considered the domain of teen girls is seen as okay, but if you mocked the NFL like that it would suddenly be a problem.
