You know what's sad?? When a company forces their groups to fit in this "next BTS" label, they are erasing all the possibilities for their artists as individuals and they're dismissing their potential to be something new. That's truly unfair for the artists.

People don’t realize that there isn’t a specific “formula” to unlock the level of success that BTS has achieved. A huge part of what makes BTS who they are today is their journey from the bottom to the top, and that was achieved slowly but surely across a number of years. BTS is special due to a combination of the unique talents of each member, their songwriting capabilities that touch people’s hearts, their genuine love for their fans and each other, and most of all their vulnerability and rawness they’ve shared with us via social media since predebut. You can’t help but root for these 7 people who have shown nothing but determination, resilience, and passion to achieve their dreams. Throw in the whole mystery of the BTS universe storyline and sheer amount of content they’ve provided for a near decade and you’re hooked. Other groups may find their success in their own ways, but it’ll never be the same set of circumstances as BTS.

"NEXT BTS" or "NEXT 1D" .. it can never happen .. People think BTS is popular just bcz of their songs and the meanings behind it .. but actually they are also popular bcz of their fun personalities .. they will never fail to make you feel different kinds of emotions .. you can give your artist a good song, good M/V, good promotions but they will never succeed if they don't know how to interact with the fans and the outer world .. BTS always stayed original and basic no matter where they went .. especially in western Interviews .. they showed their seriousness, silliness and goofiness .. that's what I think attracted ppl to engage in them .. !! Just be yourself if you wanna succeed .. what's the use of the popularity if everywhere ppl will address you as "MEET THEM .. THEY'RE THE NEXT BTS" .. then as long as you are associated with BTS you are popular .. nd that's shameful .. even you will feel humiliated ..

Hitman Bang said this years ago “When you make music put yourself in the music.” BTS has covered all the issues that they were facing in their music. Depressed, anxiety, self doubt, etc. These are issues we all have faced and over came. That’s how we found the way to love ourselves. BTS can’t be replace if the next groups are not authentically themselves.

People need to realize army doesn’t Stan bts bc of their looks or they’re the “face of Kpop”, they began with nothing, the kpop industry hated and belittled them, yet they NEVER gave up, because they actually wanted to be singers and appreciated every little achievement. They never even thought of surpassing Big Bang or exo or any other big kpop group, but instead focused on being themselves, which comes together with their single phrase: Love yourself. Their letters are one of the most special and sincere, very few artists do that nowadays. Kpop and western music need to stop trying to be someone else and start accepting and working on themselves. We don’t want a copy, we want real people

It's funny how we're in it 'because they're so handsome', and yet people still diss certain members for being 'ugly'... the double standard rises again. And isn't it even funnier how many companies work so frantically against BTS's success and spread hate against them- even as they try desperately to fathom what makes them so successful, so they can copy it? Like how having idols who rap was simply unthinkable, ludicrous, nonsense- until BTS did it, and now virtually every group has at least 1 or 2 rappers. 🙄 Until they knock off the hypocrisy, they can't possibly succeed, but they certainly are making fools of themselves trying to imitate what ought to be genuine.

I think you've put your finger on the problem. The thing that attracted me, a seventy-year-old guy from Chicago to BTS is that they feel real. They are authentic. They didn't really come up in the K-pop world. They had to fight the K-pop world to get noticed. They had to create their own opportunities to be seen by fans. And Big Hit entertainment help them all develop their own talents, even when they felt they may not have had those talents. I think you are right to focus on the uniqueness of the music, and the authentic nature of the artists. Thank you for this video.

The fact that they share Behind The Scenes of what they do and mostly have fun with their projects that we get to see, is awesome. In my lifetime, I believe we will NEVER see another group that will be loved as much by Army (men, women, teens, couples)as these guys. BTS never wanted to be "The Next Beatles" when they were compared. They were always saying we wanted to be "The Next BTS." This is what makes them different. If they had let the narrative of the next Beatles roll for some time, that would overshadow their own success. RM and Suga being authentic and understanding the mindset of the western music industry helped a lot. Remember, they were from the underground rap scene, so they knew about the originals in rap and never compared themselves or thought they could be completely like them, but they picked up the important aspects of flow, rhythm, style, and authentic lyrics, and brought that to the entire group and gave them a sense of grounding. Jhope, V, Jungkook, Jin, and Jimin also grew up in that environment. Thus, they picked up those authentic traits with also Bang PD supporting that vision in interviews, etc.

Honestly, my gut tells me that BTS is a phenomenon and it's extremely difficult to replicate phenomenons. But having said that I think that an aspect that really contributed to their success is how instead of focusing on being the best or making it big, BTS prioritized the FANS. I can't stress this enough, so many artists try to appeal to as big of an audience as possible while BTS simply focused on making good music that ARMYs would love. They constantly focus on the fans. They thank us every chance they get, and after every major performance they go on live with us, they create content just for us. You can't buy that type of fan loyalty and it only comes after years and years of investment in their fans. The fans are what got them to the position they are in today and they themselves acknowledge that. What makes them even more extraordinary is that in addition to the fan loyalty, they are incredible musicians with a very distinct musical identity, with a desire to be excellent in all they do, not so others can love them or they can be loved by the world but because they want to represent the group well and they also want to represent ARMYs well. They always talk about how they don't want us to be embarrassed for loving them. I think that's also a major factor in why they are so universally loved by millions of armys around the world. I think the more artists focus on the people who love them while also being as much themselves as possible, the more they'll see success. Instead of trying to get everybody to like you, focus on the people who do like you and go after people who would be into what you're doing. But I get that it can be tough also in the music industry. Not everyone has a Big Hit that gives you artistic freedom and sticks with you and helps you grow as an artist. Some of these artists are under immense pressure to put out hits all the time and that's not an environment conducive to creative self-expression.

^THIS. RIGHT. HERE. It's the main reason I fell in love with them. Like, I love their music, but it was their vlogs and obvious appreciation for the support of fans that made me want to continuously come back to their music. Part of that is also that BTS *had* to rely on ARMY. Big Hit had to give them that creative freedom because they were on the verge of bankruptcy. They had to work for every opportunity, for every creative spark, for every moment to stay together. And we got to share that with them. They literally put their blood, sweat, and tears on display for us to be part of. We get to see their vulnerabilities as much as their strengths. So, they've kept their fans very close since the beginning.

That is the saddest thing, that their own agencies of many groups expect or anticipate that it will be a success every time their groups have a comeback, even the fans of those kpop groups themselves expect each comeback to be a bop, hoping to surpass BTS or achieve some records and they forget to listen to the music, which personally is why I followed BTS in the beginning... even the fans themselves should stop putting pressure on their groups and enjoy...

And the fact that their kpop stans mock us saying we are just downgrading their grp by saying nonsense hurts the most. I mean it's OK to take inspiration. Before BTS, very few Grps talked about loving yourself but now the whole 4th Gen revolves around this message. Kpop industry understood, if you want to attract people, you have to do it with something that they can relate. 4th Gen stans get irritated when we say their grp took inspiration from BTS, I mean it's a good thing that they are getting inspired from their senior Grps and exploring concepts to find their own. Even when BTS debuted, they were told that they took inspiration from BIGBANG and BTS themselves said they were huge fan of them but their inspiration was limited to clothing and styling. Their msg was really different compared to others grp. That's why SM entertainment told bighit to give BTS to them, when their main motive was to hide them in the kpop industry forever and let their boy group EXO shine as BTS was turning a threat for them but bang pd refused and kept them, trusting on them. Now in 4th Gen, where ever you go, you will see this live yourself msg. Where were they before? Then taking inspiration from BTS'S clothing for instance wearing Korean traditional clothing in idol. Then BP took inspiration from them. But none talked about it because they were a famous gg. Now people publishs that BP were the one who made it famous, when BP themselves took inspiration from BTS. BTS made it famous but Ig Grps were afraid of doing it because of armys. In this year, BP'S shut down was similar to YTC, for which blinks got irritated at us and started to defend. Aren't they the same person who blames gg when they have similar style like BP? it annoys how now a days lots of kpop stans ignores BTS and tells armys to listen to other kpop Grps when they don't even want to. If a youtuber who doesn't have a profile or caption related with BTS, they get away from everything when they criticize a kpop grp but when it comes to army youtubers, they bash them and call them toxic. None respects an army's opinions whatsoever and thinks armys always want to downgrade other Grps. In Year at MMA, lots of kpop youtubers blamed armys for giving black ocean to 4th Gen Grps when originally it wasn't even them. It was a Fandom of a trot singer. I saw those videos and saw armys were actually supporting the other artists even tho BTS weren't present there. Armys can be toxic but Army's rarely give any grp black ocean because they know how it feels to have one. If anything toxic happens, everyone will blame armys whether they actually did it or not. Idk I think people just no longer want to respect BTS and the real armys as they were the one who made kpop what it is. 4th Gen is eating the attention that 3rd Gen created. Small Grps now get attention when back in the day Grps like BTS used to get heavily mistreated and also insulted.

There are a ton more as well, but JB comes to mind instantly when thinking about how much artistic freedom and talent and the artist's original own voice has been diminished and disregarded by their agencies and companies in favour of making generic music that they know will be popular but is otherwise totally meaningless and inauthentic. It's sad, really, and another thing that companies need to stop doing to their artists for the sake of having more authentic music and treating music as the art form that it is, rather than seeing it only as a means to earn lots of money or gain popularity like how many of these companies see it as. BTS understands that music is an art form and that they want to create art and share it with the world, and that's one of the biggest secrets to their success, that they have a message they want to express and that's why they keep doing this, not to make a ton of money.

One of the main reasons why the Love myself shift in K-pop failed so much is because K-pop companies treated the LY series as an artificial concept. Rather than a deep dive into the psychological artistic expression of learning to love one's self from every aspect of the psyche. That's why the numerous clips shown from 9:46 - 10:04 are just the words "I love myself" that sound almost meaningless. It's cause it is, I don't doubt that these groups or members like the idea of such a concept but I also don't doubt they know it's not the same meaning. The commodification of such an expression into a mere K-pop "concept" is almost insulting; because at that point, it just becomes a commercial capitalistic aesthetic. Think of it like the song shake it off by TS, it's catchy, has a receptive beat, has a hook to drive you in, and is repeated numerous times in the chorus. But it doesn't really mean anything. Sure, to some it does but it's mostly a dopamine driver and commercially successful. It's a hit specifically made to be a chart-topper and virally successful. This is what K-pop wanted to do with the Love myself "concept", however, it didn't hold the same weight. We were not being told WHY/HOW we should love ourselves by other groups or the painstaking process of it, we were just being told "I love myself." Again don't get me wrong they feel like great pick-me-up songs, but it's not what understands me.

no matter what the kpop industry may see when they study BTS, for example, if they see yoongi's deep struggles with anxiety and depression, or joon's extreme intelligence and effort he puts into every lyric, they couldn't possibly find anyone else that has that "original" gift or art. the boys all came in with their own talented abilities and that's what they used to create as a "base" to start off their careers. the kpop companies can try whatever they want to mirror BTS but it just won't work because they care about external situations and how they want their members to act or be seen toward the outer world. they don't realize that in order to make the ''next BTS'' is that their missing the BIG first part of making one and that is to not focus on music, but to start with natural abilities and deeply allowing the members to do what makes them feel like "them" in order to work their way to the top. and even if they too do that, there is no possible way they can reach where BTS has reached during these long, favoritized, ignorant, and clout-chasing 9 years. BTS has also gone through their own hardships as a group and independently which also plays a big part in their growth. plainly, there is no such thing as the ''next BTS" and there never will be.

This must give Bang Si-Hyuk such satisfaction, given how badly he, his company and ‘our’ (lol) members were treated by SM and all the other big KPop companies in the early days. The problem for them is they will always be chasing his coattails because what he and his boys (with the huge support of his long time staff) did was change, create and set trends that can never be reset! There’s no such thing as another “BTS”, just like there is no such thing as another “Michael Jackson”. If there is ever to be another group who could be even a fraction as successful as BTS, they will have to find some NEW barrier to break and each member would have to be freakishly talented; but it’s virtually impossible if you ask me…they’re legendary!!! They try to create the next BTS but they can't recreate a basic part of BTS and that is the love that ARMY has for them, it's natural, real and unconditional. It's not based on visuals, or kpop rules, it's based on something that BTS planted in every ARMY and it can't be recreated mechanically.

People tends to forget that the main power of BTS is their music. They are not a mere idol, they are musicians with a lyrical genius and genius songwriter as the cores. And they also have genius musicians around them such as pdogg and bang pd. Their songs resonates a lot with life, and not only about cheap love songs. To find the next BTS? You'll have to find musicians first, then trained them to dance and sings. Good luck 😂

Forget about being BTS. 💜 I became a fan because of their music, mostly their other songs not their Title songs. It took a year before I began watching the wealth of their behind the scenes, them at play, them learning how to create a variety show, dance practices, clips of their live performances, and all the fan produced videos like this one.

exactly! when I first heard of BTS, i was in Japan for 6months (One Day Japanese version) i really thought they were Japanese artists until I listened more songs from their Skool Luv Affair album that I knew they were South Koreans and I was hooked with their music specially with their lyrics. I actually don't want to see any picture of them so I just search their song lyrics but I avoided those with videos & pics hahaha. My favorite singing voice is JK's, rapping style I love JHope's & Suga then last RM. The first time I finally see who BTS' "faces" was when I watched their FIRE performnce in that huge stage and from then on I watched videos & read just everything about them. American Hustle was my fave, I count how many times I've watched it! And my bias is Jimin - V - Jin! 😂😅 Til now BTS & some of Jung Yong Hwa's songs are in my playlist of SK artist & the rest is OPM & mix of Japanese & Latin songs.

they always focus on the wrong things in their eagerness to reach bts in some capacity. When you look at every single bts album, the "concept" fits with what the members are going through as people or artists at that moment, it feels genuine to them and true to their journey. The tannies music is like diaries. And also bts NEVER compromise quality - you don't know what it's gonna sound like, the genre, or the lyrics, but you KNOW it's gonna have quality, and that they'll have something to say with it. When they're about to release new music it feels like you'll get to learn more about them, their feelings and thoughts, their state of mind and be touched by it (while possibly shaking ass to it lol)... and when it does get released, you can track back and see the connections with stuff they were going through at the time the music was made. How many times have we looked back at song and "omg this is what they meant". Their work gets deeper and deeper the more you learn about them. Remember when we learned the heart-breaking truths behind Outro: Tear and Black Swan way waay after their releases? Even when performing, you can see bts sending a message with the songs they pick for a setlist. I remember when they performed Idol wearing hanboks on Fallon Week after the storm of "they're sell outs for singing in english" accusations after dynamite was released. They use their music to communicate, to express themselves. But people who try to create the "next bts" never have artistry, sincerity or self-expression in mind, they focus on money, greed and clout. Visuals are great, choreo is great, but damn if you do not make more efforts on the music quality than don't expect to keep people's interest. At the end of the day, if you take all the shine from bts looks, visuals and extra content, their music still slaaaps. I'd add that Proof comeback is a great example of how bts makes choices, some argue that Run BTS should be the title track bc it's a more hype commercial song that would do better on charts and with gp, but Namjoon said "everything I want to say is in Yet to Come", so artistically and in the context of them having to take a break it makes more sense to pick YTC as tt, because that song represents the main message they wanna convey and their promise of coming back together to continue their journey. Now YTC mv is grammy nominated (the grammys still suck, but at least they're not acting blind to tannies korean music anymore), an mv that pays homage to their whole career. There is no way these "next bts" companies would've made that kind of choice, bc they only want immediate obvious explosive success. Money and clout come first. That's such a pity because although to me BTS is a "once in a lifetime" artist and there is no "next" them, these labels (K- or western) might have under them people with pontential for greatness, but in their immediatism and obsession with control they rarely give them the time and space to truly grow and develop. Now that members are doing solo releases, you can look at each one and see how it's very representative of their individual personalities, not only on the work, but on the promo material too. JITB artwork is very Hobi coded, Jin creating Wotteo is veeery him, Namjoon having minimalistic, phylosofic and conceptual artsy aesthetic for his album is very him as well. Even Dreamers that is made especifically as a the world cup theme therefore not a project focused on jk's personal life, still represents so well JK and BTS' posture as people, their journey and their beliefs "Look who we are, we are the dreamers. We make it happen, cause we believe it." You're not gonna stand out if you just do the exact same as everybody else, and it baffles me how these industry people cannot grasp that concept. As Namjoon would say "Do you".

so true. the level of excellence of each bts member is so high, that each one of them can have solo careers that will outshine other kpop groups collectively. the first two solo attempts already show that the achievement of one bts member is greater than what other kpop groups could dream of. imagine jhope headlining an iconic american music festival by himself and creating such an impression with his first album from music fans and critics alike. imagine jin selling a million-plus physical copies of his first solo track -- an achievement that other kpop groups can only wish for. as one black american critic commented, bts as a band is like having seven beyonces in one group. that's high praise by any measure, which sadly no other kpop bts wannabe can approximate.

Very true. You go through a few different phases when you first get into BTS and start considering yourself an ARMY too. It takes time to notice the difference between how ARMY moves vs. others, time to tune your expectations to accepting that BTS never stay in one place. Whatever era got you hooked is one of a kind and won't come again. It also takes time to really absorb and begin to trust BTS' sincerity, then to trust yourself. To understand that it's ok to feel so deeply about them. BTS had to literally raise ARMY and we became a trust for them too. They have the privilege of just making the music they want because of ARMY. Even though they are scared and insecure about every release, every new risk, they still feel safe and secure enough to do it and show us their works. They trust us, we trust them, so media and industry shunning has never managed to damage their career - making them more free. You just can't replicate that kind of relationship.

People need to realize how BTS started their debut. They started with nothing, nowadays, if a group is coming into the world, they already have the essentials for starting out. Be your own person and find your way to make music. You cannot remake something that is already done. BTS is BTS. All of these ‘boy bands’ who are made in a factory will never understand how hard it is to make it to the top. They already have it all and they’ll never understand why people don’t fall in love with their work. It’s for the money and that’s how they fail.

This is a good analysis of the current k-pop scene. I am a kpop songwriter and all these attempts have been frustrating for us writers. To us, it is clear that there is no formula to re-create BTS, but record labels will try anyway, because they have money and they want more money. BTS' success is based on 1) An exceptional quality of the songs, which means that the single will top the charts digitally, and not just the album through physical sales; digital chart toppers come when the greater public also buys into the song, and not just the fandom 2) An exceptional aura and like-ability as human beings, beyond their music. Record labels could (maybe) reproduce 1) by picking amazing "western" pop songs like they picked "Dynamite" or "Butter", to top the US single charts. BUT (and this is a big BUT) they surely can't replicate 2). No money can buy that natural charisma. What is very sad is that actually the labels are not even doing well with replicating 1). They are investing an enormous amount of money in everything else but the quality of the music, in a desperate attempt to "create hype". This is why in 2022 girl bands dominated digitally but boy bands didn't. The single songs were better and the greater public picked on them. Soon someone else will come out by themselves, like BTS did, with incredible Music + Aura of their own, breaking new boundaries - and the focus will naturally shift to these new superstars

Streaming doesn't bring the money in for the artist like a big fan base does who buy Albums, concert tickets, and merchandise. It's a fanbase that difference between an artist selling out the biggest stadiums in the world or playing to in much smaller venue's like arena's and theatres. We know Spotify deletes streams all the time and it makes it look like a artist/group is not doing so well in order to push curated paid for play lists. It's all part of media hype. It also means they are not even paying the artist for all their streams either stealing from the artists. The US music industry likes to push the narrative that GP support is better than fandom support. Fandoms are members of the GP we don't come from another planet. We are the one's who will support an artist their work so that the artist gets paid for their art by buying as I said at the beginning of this post. We know how the industry works, we've had to learn about it.

@@eileencritchley4630 I 100% agree with you, and it is THE REASON why I love k-pop and work in this field. The bond between the fans and the artists is the reason why k-pop is so successful, and, if you want to know, I refuse to even use Spotify for how much it underpays both artists and writers. I can probably buy myself a T-shirt with the royalties Spotify sends me **in an entire year across all the releases** (and I am sure for artists it's the same). However, an incredible song will reach out beyond the fandom and make the artist bigger. The fact that fans are so dedicated should not be a reason for the labels to be lazy and not try to give their artists amazing music. Sometimes, they seem to prioritise everything else but the music.

I have thought a lot about what accounts for BTS' success. Clearly the individual members of BTS were chosen for their talents and they have worked incredibly hard to hone their craft. Their rise to the top from very humble beginnings has its own appeal. They were not afraid to write and make music about topics which were unusual in the Kpop industry. They have allowed us to share aspects of their lives so that their fans feel connected and relate to them. But I truly believe that JHope was right when he talked about it being fate that brought these 7 amazing artists together. I have no doubt that there will NEVER be another BTS!💜

I remember when the LY series came out, and it’s something that really blew me away and also included what other positivity anthems or loving yourself songs didn’t: context and validation for a lot of vulnerable people in society like myself. Positivity anthems and songs about loving yourself are by no means a new thing, I’ve heard songs like that on American radio for over a decade. But they’re always super vague and send the same general message: loving yourself is so easy, stop being a negative Nancy, and if you’re depressed due to things you can’t control, we’re not even going to consider that. I’ve never really liked them for that reason, and there’s barely any variation from this. Plus, I’m autistic and after seeing people like me used as inspiration props, a lot of the songs reminded me of that and it was just uncomfortable. LY didn’t have that issue because they had a clear and concise message: as a society, we’re too stuck in the idea of having a romance as the only type of love, and we go after it to the point we end up sacrificing ourselves if it turns toxic; and the way to heal from that is to embrace the good and bad parts of yourself and keep working towards a better you and recognize + leave a toxic situation; there are other types of love to focus on than romance, like self-love, and most importantly, it’s okay to stumble while doing so. It made people feel less bad about not knowing how to love themselves, and gave them a decent start point too. Not to mention that for aro and ace people (like me!) who have a hard time finding themselves in general in a society that makes us feel broken for not focusing on romance, this was such an empowering message and validated those identities. Oh, and the songs were not overwhelming to my sensory issues like a lot of what radio keeps spamming, so that’s a plus. People are still making love yourself songs now, but they usually come out like the ones that were on 2010s radio: very generalist and vague. People do still enjoy these songs and I know that, but when it comes to the LY series, the context of why it succeeded is just as important as the way the music sounds.

also bts's love yourself trilogy did not come out of nowhere. if you look at their journey as a group and their past trilogies it all connects so beautifully. their music has grown with them and denoted different phases of a person's life. other kpop groups don't have this kind of fluency in their concept changes at all. it's all about the trends and what's popular and what's going to make a certain group look cooler with these people.

Another great essay. You made several very good points. 1. Artists need to be nurtured and developed to become the best of themselves, not shoehorned into a pre-conceived mold to imitate someone else. If you start with the premise of creating 'the next', you've already failed. 2. Some groups with very worthy achievements suffer by comparison to BTS. Be proud of your own accomplishments, don't try to compare yourself to someone so far beyond your ken. 3. I think that all these producers, by pushing themselves to the forefront, enforce the Western prejudice against Kpop: that it's manufactured and fake. Allow your artists to be the stars of the show.

Like Namjoon has been saying all these years: “We’ve been doing our own thing. We’re thankful that people are feeling it, loving it, and now we’re here.” The difference between kpop and BTS is just by that phrase alone. BTS didn’t care whether they had a million fans or thirty. If their songs, their music, their messages reached just one person, they were grateful. Even now, they appreciate every single ARMY because they know each ARMY is their own person with their own story. It’s never been about how many awards they have, #1’s they could achieve, Grammys they could grab. It’s always been about their story, music, message, and passion at the very heart of their work. It’s why ARMYs have never doubted BTS even as they go off to serve their mandatory service. They’ve been doing their own thing, going against the normal stream. They’ve taken risks, many risks. Done things that no other artist has done before. And that’s why they have the recognition they have. They weren’t afraid to do their own thing. If people liked them, that was an added bonus. They truly, truly do this job because they are passionate for it. They have a motivation that’s beyond the materialistic achievements. And that’s the difference. If there’s no stronger motivation behind why you chose the career you did, you’re bound to die out, I’m sorry to say. This is why BTS is worldwide. They care about their music and their message, not the successes they gain. They continue to do their own thing despite everyone telling them to do other things. They keep shocking the world by going places, doing, and achieving things others could only dream of. If the artists aren’t passionate about their work, they’re gonna fail. That’s why everyone has failed.

One thing I always think about is how some of these other companies try to make their groups just popular - they don't think about how to truly impact the public and the industry I think that's what sets BTS aside The popularity isn't the goal, it's the consequence They focus on sharing their art and having a positive global impact and by doing that they naturally get more popular in a stable way and even if people aren't really into their songs, they still respect them as artists

Only those who were there during their struggles know how much they've suffered and deserved their success. People love a good UNDERDOG story and BTS is the face of all underdogs. I wasn't their fan when I saw them debut. But it was their music and talent that finally drew me in. I saw how clumsy Jin and RM danced during their earlier concerts ( they're both great now) , how Jin didn't have such great vocals back then ( he's AMAZING now), I was blown away by how fast and good Jungkook was as a rapper ( I wish he could return to rapping in their songs again)... and yet they never got the recognition. It was only after I Need You that they finally got it. But up until then they were always on the side watching. I'm so happy that I became in Army before they blew up. I remember us banding together to try to get them to the top and I am so happy of our ARMY fandom for always being the kindest to one another! Skool Luv Affair caught my attention, but it was the Forever Young series and their ridiculously hilarious personalities that finally drew me in. Took me from early 2014 all the way to 2017 to finally tell who the hell was who cuz I'm old and SENILE, but now I can tell who's who by just looking at certain body parts!..lmao

Simon Cowell really said he can't stand the most popular group in the world being non-western. I forgot about that video, ugh I can't stand him. I'm so tired of the music industry as a whole. I really never realized when I was younger how horrible and corrupt everything was. I mean, I figured there was a baseline of corruption like with anything- but they're really just blatantly horrible. It's a shame. I actually feel bad for all these groups that get created and abandoned because they never really had a chance. Their companies never allowed them the opportunity- money might buy a lot of things but it can't buy growth as an artist.

SM had my boy Taemin, one of the most artistically creative k artists, singing about jopping! 😭 it would’ve been so much better if companies allowed their members to put their own quirks instead of forcing them all into a certain image / genre. This way everyone can shine instead of making everyone a carbon copy of each other. I think that’s why BTS is also very popular because each member has a distinct image and it shows in their solo songs specifically. Also, I don’t get why kpop wants to be “the next bts” by getting white people validation. Beinh fsmous in your home country is honestly such a great achievement in its own and if it’s global that’s great too!! But anyways I’m rambling now but each group has the potential to be huge globally but the companies are just not taking advantage of that. But yeah, bts is freaking amazing. singlehandedly making kpop known in other countries!

One feature of BTS that I find unique is that each member is individually also has capabilities to become super star. They are different from each other in looks, height, appearance, mood but they all are gifted people. They all dress up different, they wear different attitudes, yet they look like a group in harmony when they come together. Seeing them all in one frame is so refreshing. Also, Tae, Jin, J-hope, Jimin they did not want to become idols. But they had their passion, so they worked hard on it. Their practice to make their own vlogs made them friends with camera right from the beginning. When someone can form a group like that that BTS will have competition. All 7 have shed their egos and sometime personal choices to make this BTS.

People in the music industry and music media don’t understand that BTS growth and popularity was an organic one; that their success didn’t come over night. So whenever Rolling Stone magazine or Billboard and whatnot are talking about “finding the next BTS” it’s like they are literally shooting themselves in the foot because they refuse to understand that the boys aren’t your run of the mill idol group and that there’s no one else like them and it’ll never be duplicated! The hardships they have encountered in their early years have forged their characters and their bond!

The best way to be like BTS, is to be yourselves. Why? Because that's what BTS did. They, at the time of their debut, didn't focus on being like Big Bang or EXO(The two biggest Male KPOP groups at the time). They focused on being themselves and this choice was reflected in their music. That's why people like them. They feel genuine and you can tell that they're just being who they are.

I agree. The artists that become the most established and well-regarded seem to be the ones who are just genuinely invested in what their music is about. Sure, not all members at all times cared about each song in the album the same way in BTS, but they all knew what they were there for. More importantly: they weren't being thrown around by Bang PD. They had to want what he wanted, because if they didn't - it just wouldn't work out. They wouldn't have a vested interest to keep the production going if they weren't interested in the story they were telling. That was definitely what separated BTS at the time for me, compared to other 3rd gen BGs that came out. I liked them because I knew they were telling an honest story and that - that would reflect through their music. That should honestly be a bigger strategy for most new groups. Always give the members a creative outlet to be passionate about. Sure, it's one thing to optimize each comeback to perfectly be in line with all the interests of the industry in that moment, yaddah yaddah. But as it seems to me, the strongest bargaining chip within the music industry is a motivated artist. You can't create motivated artists by forcing concepts down their throat that they don't like, and not especially when it's "You have to become the next BTS". It'd also do a lot better for the diversity of the music industry to just let the artists do what they want or discover what they are best at.

One big thing people and even kpop stan seem to not realize is, We ARMY don't consider ourselves as Kpop Stans, Most of us don't know a thing about any other kpop artists and have no plans on knowing them, Most of us love Bts for the music and message not just for looks and visuals, Most of us are music lovers who don't just fall in love with some artists with aesthetic looking music videos, trained vocal skills, trained rap skills without passion for music, For most of us BTS's lyrics, words and even action literally saved our life and If not saved then gave us hopes and motivations. When kpop stans tries to manipulate ARMY to like their fav group, just to find the copied concept and no originality sucks. I personally started to listen to another big kpop group because my sister told me to give a try, I listen to some of their music and could tell in a whimp that everything reminded me of BTS because they were copying BTS in a most subtle way... I stopped listening to that group and focused on BTS instead. SO BTS ARMY are not KPOP stans, Most of us don't know a shit about KPOP, we are here for BTS and we will be here until BTS stays so those people need to understand we are not charity who give our time and efforts for every other groups that the kpop company produces, We are here for the passion, authenticity, hard work, message, motivation, solidiraty, and most of all "MUSIC"...........

Fun fact: The Backstreet Boys were big in Europe before they were big in the US. They promoted themselves by performing as an opening act for DJ Bobo (Swiss eurodance soloist). Maybe that's something some Kpop groups should try as well: Proving their quality with performances and slowly gaining a loyal fanbase instead of trying to take the short route through American-based media-marketing. BTS blew up so quickly in the US because they already had a fanbase there which just grew quicker and became huge after they a) appeared on mainstream media and b) kept putting out great songs with great concepts and great performances.

SuperM is a project by SM. It is not the traditional Kpop boy group. All the members (Taemin, Baekhyun, Kai Taeyong, Mark, Ten and Lucas) of SuperM are popular and successful in their respective group and in their own rights. Taemin from SHINee is very successful in his group and as a solo artist; even Jimin respects him and views him as a dance mentor. Kai and Baekhyun are from EXO, and EXO is up there with BTS in terms of success and legacy in Korea and in Asia. EXO was chosen by South Korea to perform at the 2018 Winter Olympics ceremony and was titled “Nation’s Pick”, first of any Kpop group. In fact the fastest sold concert on record was an EXO concert in Seoul in 2017 where tickets were gone in 0.2 seconds. The remaining members are from NCT, and NCT is still one of the top 5 charting Kpop acts amongst boy groups along with BTS.

@lemonssssssss4 Yeah I agree with you that it's a rare sight to see industry people and idols being genuine but every coin has two sides. Since this is the era of the internet, it is extra hard to tell who is putting on a mask and who isn't and also viewers don't even care that much. All we have become accustomed to do is scroll through random data. Even then, although there is a not-so-genuine side in any industry there is also a genuine side as well. Where people make music because they love to, collaborate because of admiration towards another artist and not only for clout, publicly express love towards someones artistry because they truly enjoy them. So, as concious consumers of data we must do enough research and not follow the trend of who is the most popular at the moment. So, while I agree with your first sentence, I don't think it is how the industry is made and it is NOT okay. The rise in mediocre singing and performance while hard focus on visuals, emergence of songs which are custom made for the tiktok algo, these are all because WE as consumers want them. Demand meets supply and we only get what we want. That has been the rule since forever and ever and ever. Supporting Mamamoo makes me proud and happy. I don't do it because others are doing it or creating hype around that group. So, we must support the right groups and right people.

Amazing video as always!!!! Thank you for your hard work! 💜💜 I’m honestly baffled at the sheer amount and brazenness of media play in kpop lately, but also not surprised considering how desperate this industry is. I mean they’re the ones severely oversaturating their own industry to find ‘the next BTS’ without realising that if they carry on at this rate they’re gonna implode their own industry from the inside. This includes Hybe, who are trying to push out a million groups to make up for BTS’ absence the next couple years (they said it themselves). And those groups won’t make up for BTS because they’re falling into the same trap as the rest of the industry… pumping out groups and seeing what works. But there’s no originality or individuality so it won’t work. The only thing Hybe and their joint ventures with these labels to make groups is lacking is the over the top media play to link them to BTS. But the point still stands. They’re falling into the trap and continuing to oversaturate an industry that’s already failing in what they’re trying to do. It’s crazy to me how the industry seems so ignorant to everything they’re doing wrong and they just continue to shovel money into the same failed tactics. I’m unsure why they think the ‘fake it till you make it’ route will work, but what’s really annoying me is how they attach and drag BTS’ name into it. I’m sick of the constant media play articles mentioning BTS. I’m sick of their achievements being labelled by the industry as ‘K-pop’s achievements’. It’s getting so so so tiring. All I want is for BTS to be left alone with their artistry and their legacy.

We ARMYs are countering some of that by simply not liking K-pop- to the point where people are complaining that we're prejudiced against it. Which isn't so, it's just, BTS isn't K-pop. K-pop is the industry. BTS don't use or follow the vast majority of K-industry standards, rules, guidelines. So, they're not K-pop, and ARMYs aren't K-pop fans. With the guys off in the military for the next couple years, I think the collapse is coming. BTS won't be around; ARMY will stop fueling the Hallyu wave, because most of us won't throw support to other idols. The industry will learn that other groups simply cannot fill the gap left by BTS's absence, and the government will learn that when 100M foreigners withdraw financial support of the country, they lose a lot of soft power along with actual income. The current groups and the ones in training will turn into that flash in the pan, one-hit wonder phenom that the first and second-gen groups were- that PSY was- in the west. And we already know that Korea and a lot of Asia is quite jaded by...can we call it classic K-pop? I play an RP video game where people talk a lot about 'cookie-cutter builds', and that keeps coming back to me. So many of these new groups are the 'cookie-cutter' sort, right down to being chosen for a very specific facial structure.

@@ystrw I think you’re right about a collapse or decline. I’m just wondering what form that’ll take and how we’ll see it happen. Because even now, whilst BTS is still around or whilst their break is still relatively recent, the media play is still going strong and fans are still under the impression that these groups are far more successful and relevant than they actually are… I know we saw a little bit of realisation of BTS’ impact from the industry professionals and journalists when BTS announced their break, but the delusion within the actual kpop fandom seems to be going strong for the moment. I’m wondering if a contributing factor to the downward spiral of kpop will actually be the fact that BTS isn’t here as a group to compare others to right now? Because a huge part of the fake hype of these other groups is measuring their success in comparison to BTS. So if BTS aren’t active in the same manner as before for the next couple years, will that affect the popularity of these other groups simply based off the fact that BTS aren’t there to set any goals or standards or just for general comparison. Will fans be as interested if BTS aren’t there for them to pit their groups against anymore? Will companies know what to do with their groups now that BTS isn’t creating trends and goals for them anymore? I don’t understand why these fans insist that these groups ‘pave their own way’ when literally everything they’re doing is trying to emulate BTS. No one, kpop fans nor companies, even thought of or mentioned the Best MV Grammy category before BTS got their nom. It didn’t even enter their minds.. yet now all the kpop fans are saying their groups deserved it more, despite the fact they don’t know how the Grammys work and they don’t know their groups would actually have to submit their work for that category to even have a chance at being nominated… they just want it because BTS has it.. theirs no individuality. They have no initiative in helping their groups get anywhere or helping their groups walk their own paths and the companies don’t help because they put their groups on BTS’ path too 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

@@Clementinelands You're so right about others measuring their success against BTS, and that with that measuring stick gone, they're going to be floundering. They don't have an ARMY to launch them into uncharted territory. I notice a few fandoms saying that with BTS out of the way, 'this is our group's chance to really make an impact', and I just laugh. If we've got to clear the playing field for you first, you're not going to make much of an impact! Well, one thing that's going to happen is, award-voting is going to take a steep plunge downward. ARMY won't be voting- except possibly to put some weight behind SVT, TXT, and the other HYBE groups- and a dozen or so fandoms won't be uniting to vote against them. There'll still be some fandom rivalries and 'voting against' business, but not on the scale of millions anymore. And I'm thinking award attendance/viewing is going to decline as well. So the prestige of these shows is going to trend downward. Touring groups will still fill up arenas and stadiums and sell merch, because a fandom of 1-10M can sell out 20-50k seats pretty quickly, but no one is going to be able to reach the point where 4 of their shows exceed the income of all other full tours combined. Nor will they be crashing streaming apps with the weight of numbers. What's particularly interesting about that is, SK (naturally) gets vastly more income from domestic shows than from international ones. But that only signifies when *large* numbers of internationals are grabbing concert seats, buying plane tickets, reserving hotels, ordering meals, and buying merch. So other groups' at-home concerts will be successful, but they won't draw the number of international fans that BTS does- they don't have as many. That will be significantly less profitable overall. Added to that, someone else is going to take the 'brand representative' title for a while, but the days of *unendorsed* stuff selling out in hours, just because JK drinks it or RM collects it or J-Hope wears it will be over. Tourism in general is going to take a plunge. I forget what percent of tourists came to South Korea because 'it's where BTS is'- 25-30ish%- but I have already seen plenty of people saying that they have put off or cancelled plans to travel to SK. (Silly thing: Seoul Tourism was raving about getting millions of views to their latest Jin-RM and Suga-Jimin ads... but views are not plane tickets.) I've seen QUITE a lot of ARMYs saying they simply aren't going to purchase anything Korean until our guys are back again. We broke ARMYs are getting a chance to save up for whatever BTS albums, merch and tours may come along in 2-3 years...and many dedicated and protective ARMYS are quite annoyed/offended that the guys were so exploited by the very government that refuses to acknowledge their value. And as I said, most of us just are not K-pop fans and don't want other groups' merch. What's probably most significant in global terms is the Western music industry. It's taken BTS and ARMY to make even a few cracks in the granite wall of the Western industry's racist, xenophobic attitude. The WMI regards BTS specifically and K-pop in general as rivals, threats. With BTS out of the picture, the industry is going to relax- and go into full ignore-mode, with overtones of wariness just in case some other group does start to look as big and threatening as BTS used to. (I say used to; I think the WMI is counting on BTS's days of being 'big' ending with their enlistment, and boy are THEY in for a surprise in 2-3 years.) A few really determined and unique groups will manage to chart now and again, maybe- but Billboard's newest policy about counting *US radio play* as their most significant metric and 'all that digital stuff' as a very distant second, is going to be a hurdle very, very few K-groups can get over. There'll be a lot of complaining from fandoms, but it won't amount to much. So it will take a while to sink in, but I do think these groups and fandoms will eventually wake up and realize they aren't even on the back burner anymore. This is the kind of thing that happened to J-pop in the 90s; Japan had this J-wave going, J-pop and anime, as Korea's is K-pop and K-drama... but they failed to sustain it and it fizzled. SK is making the same mistakes, and can only expect the same results. And that was quite the thesis. This has been on my mind a bit. 💜

@@ystrw Yeah, I think a really unique aspect of our fandom is initiative and general know-how. I’ve never ever seen another fandom work in the same way as army does when it comes to pushing a group forward. We have a lot of very very smart people in this fandom, and a determination and hunger that serves as motivation to gain knowledge, and therefore cultivate success. I’d argue that there is no other fandom out there that knows the charts, and the way the industry works in general, like army does. In fact, I’d say we’re a lot wiser than a lot of ‘industry professionals’ when it comes to these things. And that is a huge reason why BTS were able to get to where they were (on top of their tireless work of course). We never waited for instruction that would never come. We read, we learned, we researched, we planned and then we put it all into action… and we got results. And that’s a huge reason why other groups are already at a disadvantage! They don’t have fandoms like that, and likely never will! And I know this because army is one of a kind. Sure, artists have had devoted fanbases, but there’s never been a set of factors coming together (boyband, racism, discrimination, xenophobia, unfairness) that forced any fandom before us to push their way out of a locked box like we were forced to do. All of that, of course paired with the fact that BTS had the ability to create the crazy levels of devotion and protectiveness we feel toward them because of the fact that their sincerity bleeds so heavily through every aspect of everything they show us, including their art… I guess they really did create a monster when they created army (in a good way 🙌🏻💜🤣). Voting will be interesting to observe, because I know for a fact that there’s been a lot of cheating from certain fandoms (they’re not very good at hiding themselves and their schemes on Twitter 😭🤣). I’m interested to see those numbers plunge when BTS’ numbers aren’t there to compete with. Although, we don’t know how much the BTS members will be nominated their solo work yet, so we’ll see how it all plays out! Award show attendance already did dip! The MMA online viewers were way down, and from the pictures I saw of the actual venue, it wasn’t sold out. I heard the crowd was pretty dead! Apparently, BTS’ video tape showing all their achievements and daesangs got a bigger cheer than most groups awards and performances! Seoul Tourism can brag all they want, but I’m assuming most views came from army wanting to look at the members, and they probably had those videos running as ads on KZbin which drives up views. I don’t know because I have KZbin premium, so I don’t get ads. But I’m assuming they were running them as ads 🤣. As you say, views are not plane tickets!!! This gives me the same vibes as when I saw some reactors brag about their channels growing but then they whined that their merch wasn’t selling… when they fail to realise that 90% of people are only there because they’re reacting to BTS. If you took away BTS, there is no subscribers. People aren’t there to buy a product from them, people are just there because it’s bonus BTS content (I’m sure there is people out there who are genuinely devoted and loyal viewers to reaction channels, but I can’t see it being very many people. Certainly not to the point of buying merch.) Just like if you took away BTS from those Seoul Tourism ads and stopped promoting them with paid KZbin ads, there’s be no views. I watched those ads a billion times, but I didn’t go buy a ticket to visit Seoul 🤷‍♀️🤣 Honestly, I’m an adult, I understand that SK isn’t ONLY BTS or kpop. Are BTS the reason I learned more about the culture, learned Hangul and am learning the language, yes! BUT, I am also not stupid and I won’t insult the country and the culture by implying that there’s nothing to them beyond a musical act. I am very interested in SK as a country. I like to travel and I’d love to experience SK. But, I can see why for some people, what the government is doing to BTS is putting them off. I don’t personally think like that. How I feel about what they’re doing to BTS and how I feel about some of the political and general ideologies of the country is separate to my feelings on travelling there, seeing the landscape, experiencing culture etc. I’m a firm believer in not painting everyone and everything with the same brush, so I won’t blame every one and everything in the country for everything that’s happening. Do I hate that government for the way they treat BTS? YES! Do I hate how they handle other things like women’s rights and lgbtqia+ rights? ABSOLUTELY. But I also hate those things about a lot of other countries and I separate those aspects in my mind and address them accordingly. But at the end of the day, everyone has their own feelings and as long as there’s no general unfairness, racism or discrimination going on, people can choose to spend their money as they please. If someone’s only connection to SK is BTS and they have no interest aside from that, then of course it’s likely they will have a different outlook on investing money into the country than someone who is invested outside of BTS. However, like you say, I don’t think they’ll get much army money from us supporting other groups… because a majority of us aren’t into kpop and therefore have no reason to invest in any other groups. I do think there was this general expectation that a lot of us would jump to other groups from BTS (they probs thought we’d jump to txt and enhypen).. but that’s the industries mistake. They should know by now that BTS doesn’t come from the kpop cycle where companies cultivate ‘company stans’ who are ready to jump to the next group once the one they stan already gets older or enlists or disbands. I am actually interested to see what happens in the western music industry, because although you’re right, they will relax and ignore because BTS is out of the picture, they also love the clout BTS gains for them. We already saw them ‘replace’ BTS in certain award shows this year with other groups in an attempt to, no doubt, get ‘kpop clout’ (because of course they don’t see BTS as an individual artist.. they see ‘kpop’ and think it’s all the same). But I know for a fact that despite them replacing BTS, they didn’t get the clout they were expecting. So I’m interested to see if they’ll keep on trying to invite kpop groups for clout or whether that’ll fizzle out. About charting, I have no doubt we’ll continue seeing kpop groups chart relatively easily in the top spots of the Billboard 200. They’ve got their technique down perfectly. Make 394738282 album versions, the fans will buy them all for the ‘visuals’ and that drives them up into the top spot. But unfortunately that doesn’t translate into enough streams or sales of the actual music to get them into the Hot 100. I mean I don’t blame them for not wanting to stream that music, it sounds like an alien threw up a construction site. But of course, it also won’t get radio play, so unless a Gangnam Style happens or something majorly blow up on tiktok, there’s no chance there’ll be a big hit on the singles chart. But yeah, honestly, I’m just waiting for the moment it clicks for everyone that it really is ‘the BTS wave’, not ‘the kpop wave’.

@@Clementinelands @ystrw Thank you to you both for your very insightful analysis of BTS' impact globally and domestically and how the lack of their active presence as a group in the next 2 years may affect the Kpop and western music industries and potential consequences. I have been thinking about the solo albums of our BTS members which is a huge first for them and for A.R.M.Y. I believe strongly, based also on past evidence, that all 7 via their mixtapes, OSTs, covers, soundcloud releases etc had successfully shown high streaming numbers domestically & globally plus they were able to get in the Billboard Top 100 & 200. Starting late last year with Jin's Yours & Super Tuna, V's Christmas Tree then followed this year with JK's Stay Alive, My You, Left & Right, Dreamers; Suga's That That, Jimin's With You, JHope's Jack In The Box album, RM's Sexy Nukim feature, & Jin's Astronaut - all these songs have consistently done well whether as soloists or when a BTS member was featured with other artists. These songs were not even their own solo album except for JHope. No one can forget Hobipalooza and now he is nominated as a solo artist at the MAMA. I just know that each solo album released (really looking forward to Namjoon's masterpiece) will once again blow that proverbial glass ceiling out of the stratosphere. We will witness waves of major "firsts" once again. Given each member's unparalleled work ethic and sheer determination to produce the very best music coupled with A.R.M.Y's eagerness to discover new innovative sounds / music from them, I won't be surprised if all BTS solo albums will break streaming records, top charts and continue to win awards. They are just that good at their craft. They do not settle for less. I also boldly predict a resurgence of their earlier music because new & old A.R.M.Y. will buy these albums for various reasons. So I have a feeling that BTS as soloists will give other idol groups and perhaps even established & upcoming solo artists a run for their money. Such a phenomenon will be unheard of in the Kpop world because it will be unpredictable and an anomaly. But that is BTS for you. Clearly if BTS solo albums reach unprecedented success in these 2 years when they are not active as a group, then no one can ever question the massive power of A.R.M.Y and the artistry of BTS as individuals. This will show all those who still do not understand BTS' phenomenal reach - that they are beyond the "Kpop idol group" mold and that most A.R.M.Y are not really Kpop idol music consumers but only BTS music supporters who recognise & appreciate innovative, authentic and intelligently written (composed) lyrics (music). This will be such a rude awakening to the Kpop industry & other music industries who think they can use BTS for their own gains. Let's watch another thrilling and phenomenal BTS saga unfold.

As a non pop/band-group/idol fan (untill BTS) i wanna say BTS is that once-in-a-lifetime band, like Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Queen, Black Sabbath, Metallica... That kind of band with their own footprint and it glows, whenever they walk, they leave that trace screaming WE AE BTS not only as a band, but as individuals, as humans and as artist of all kinds. They can do whatever they want and will be perfectly executed and high quality. others bands can be succes, but never will leave the tag "next bts". BTS is the footprint

Are you a rock fan. If you are, nice to see you here. I was a rock and country fan before becoming army. Something I love about this fandom is that we all are music fans rather than only k pop fans.

I remember a person who debuted a not so long time ago, when asked about their goals after becoming an idol, their answer was getting a grammy(or performing, one of those). I don't remember that being a thing before bts, aside form suga ofc but in their case it is a possibility, it amazes me that someone can have that as a goal when they still haven't shown anything to the world yet, it's not impossible ofc but it gives you an idea of the impact and how easy they make it seem

even if kpop groups get more and more popular, there will never be a “next bts”. They have achieved great things and have paved the way for others, but no one will reach their height. For a better way to put it, there can be “the next leaders of kpop”, but no one will ever outmatch bts, they are the one and only. no one can be bts and no one can be any other kpop group
