It's the thumbnail and title combination. If the thumbnail had him with a smile on his face you would have thought it would be good news. Unfortunately the channel got a little clickbaity because that's the KZbin Algorithm game. Reaction faces, large pointing fingers, VAGUE titles... it's play the game or get crushed by it.

Hi Chris, you probably won't see this, but you've inspired me to set off on my own journey to Japan. After my fiance passed away in 2019, I lost a lot of my drive and purpose in life and, frankly, became listless. After watching travel vlogs and expat channels (especially yours) during the pandemic, i decided to take a chance on something new. I'm 35, but in 2024 will move to Tokyo to complete a 2 year international MBA and hopefully more. Just know, not only are you entertaining, you're also inspiring. Thank you for your dedication to travel and the constant search for new experiences. Edit: Thank you for all the extremely kind replies. They inspire me even more. Peace and love to all of you.

He's full of shit. You people need to stop being gullible and believing everything a random person in a comment section types. I could say I lost my wife last year in February, she had blood cancer, I was there with her all day and night until her final moments. it broke my heart losing her, I gave up on everything but Chris has inspired me to travel to other countries, experience the world and stop despairing, she wouldn't want that. Now if it wasn't for my previous statement and saying stop being gullible you'd have believed that if I commented it on this video and not a reply. It's so easy to bullshit, that's just a short lie, I could have added more detail which liars tend to do. Just ignore the attention seekers. It makes the genuine ones not be believed cos you see this shit all over yt

It certainly seems like you put a lot of heart into your work and it certainly pays off for us spoiled viewers. As a super long time viewer, when you said the first JaJ was FIVE YEARS ago it blew my mind. It almost feels like yesterday. Watching you grow from a vlogger, to making small documentaries, to small movies, and now you're a full fledged production company has been amazing and inspiring. I've been watching Japan-content since early youtube with TokyoCooney and others, so to watch another youtuber grow into the limelight has been so fun. You honestly make the best content I think on all of youtube, it's not clickbait, it's just informative and scenic with you and your friends. I wish you the best and hope you continue to make inspiring films on my favourite country! ~Some dude in Canada

as a japanese who've grown up in Miyagi the new JAJ series is absolutely exciting😭 i guess it's already been 6 years since i started checking your channel. i really got surprised when i found a thumbnail of Sendai station. back then, i barely understand your English (because of your accent and sarcasm) so i enjoyed bunch of your videos just as beautiful videoart. but now, i can understand you nearly perfectly even without English auto generated subtitles and enjoy new JAJ!! How happy it is...and i still can't believe it. can't believe it like when i knew you're just one year older than me you look...whatever. anyway, thank you for keeping posting beautiful and funny videos focusing on lots of local areas like Tohoku. i have tons of popcorn already❤

This was a wild thing to hear. I loved the spontaneity of the original Journey Across the Japan. There was something to the struggle, to the unpredictability, and the out of the way places you visited. Going back to it as I have several times, it gives me drive to be creative and a willingness to let mistakes become opportunities. There had been nothing I wanted more from this channel than a return to that format. Thank you for giving this a go, Chris!

Chris, I’m really glad to see you’re sticking with your plan of introducing lesser-travelled regions of Japan. I mean, I’ve lived in this country even longer than you (20 years!) and I still haven’t made it up to the Tohoku area. That said, I live in one of those ‘lesser-travelled’ areas myself (Mie Prefecture) and I certainly have explored THIS area quite a bit. (I’ve been working on a ‘lesser-travelled’ video of my own, but that’s another story.) Anyway, keep up the inspirational work and I’m looking forward to that video series! 🍻

We quit our corporate jobs and travelled around Japan for three months precisely because of the original Journey Across (the) Japan and other Tohoku vids. From Aomori to Akita, Morioka to Kitakata, Niigata to Matsuyama, Kumamoto and Kagoshima. Thanks for the travel inspiration - can't wait for the next adventure!

The original JAJ is still one of my all-time favorite YT series and I re-watch it like twice a year. It's also the first thing I send people unfamiliar with your channel and/or Japan in general, as not only do you do an amazing job at showing the beauty and uniqueness of Japan, but also do with that -grumpy demeanor- dry humor we all love. So, I'm really looking forward to your new adventures! Cheers, all the best from Germany.

The original Journey Across Japan was the spark that really ignited my interest in Japan. I’ve seen Japanese media and eccentric videos about Japan before, but that series showed me Japan in a whole new light. Because of that I’ve looked much more into daily life of Japan, and it’s a major reason that I visited and will move too soon. I feel that that series captured something about the real Japan that I haven’t seen in any other series. So, thank you Chris!

Just thank you!! ❤ P.S. I really like how you stick to long-form content. With all the tiktok and shorts and whatever on the internet, it's just nice to have someone like you.

The original series is such a nostalgic thing for me - that late 2018 aura is something quite dear to me despite its negative connotations. Waiting for each episode, wondering when the next ones would come out - it was just such a good time, man, I loved it. Really enjoyed it at the time, and am super excited for this new series.

SO EXCITED for the next Journey Across Japan!! We have 3 generations in my fam here in Aus who simply love it! (Nan included). Good onya for letting a team help you with the editting, I find it amazingly hard handing over creative work, our minds thinking "Of course we can do all this by ourselves within an unrealistic deadline". Since you've created so many amazing videos, it wouldn't be hard for your team to study and work out your feels. Truzza. We really hope you won't get burnt out anymore. Challenge suggestion: Sing for your food. This can be done as a competition on who gets a better feed or as a team effort. Set up a small portable kareoke on a street in the city centre/(hopefully with pedestrian traffic) and see how much you can earn for dinner... People may pay to see the rare opportunity of foreigners preforming live (like a circus) or contribute out of sheer pity (may not need any singing skills!) or avoid you altogether. More money= better dinner, less money = trip to 7-11. Natsuki would be awesome at this! Sorry if this suggestion sucks, Yes this would be cold and highly embarrassing. Might need to look up street performing licenses 🤣

Take your time on the vlogs. You’ve paid your dues, and you don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Quality work speaks for itself. Also, don’t forget snow tires and ask the locals in the tohaku area what to do there. In addition, I think you should do videos on Japanese history. Like pop culture, and life back in the 70s in Japan, 60s, 80s, and so on. Japan is just so rich in history and culture. Also, Natsuki is definitely a TRUE friend. 💯💯

Hello Chris, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my deep gratitude for the impact your channel has had on my life. Over the years, it has served as a constant source of comfort and joy, becoming a significant part of my weekly routine for almost a decade now. I can't pinpoint the exact video that drew me in initially, but I've watched them all, each contributing to a sense of familiarity and solace in my life. Dealing with various challenges, including mental health issues and a speech disorder that often led to isolation, your videos have been a reliable source of positivity and inspiration. Your content has ignited a desire within me to explore the enchanting culture and beautiful places showcased in your Japan videos. Despite not having had the opportunity to visit Japan yet due to time and financial constraints, the prospect of experiencing it firsthand remains a cherished aspiration. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the profound impact you've had on my life, even though we've never met and may never cross paths. Thank you for the dedication and love you pour into your videos; they have made a meaningful difference. I look forward to continuing to enjoy everything you create. As the holiday season approaches, I wish you, Sharla, and everyone in your life the very best. May this Christmas be filled with joy, warmth, and the company of loved ones. Thank you once again for being a constant source of positivity and inspiration. Warm regards, Miriam from Norway
