I think my favorite part of the gameplay loop is the way the devs balanced the Soldier weapons, where the "worse" shotgun can one shot all enemies, while the "better" rocket can't overkill health bars. Makes it so no matter what build you're going for, the whole kit is still important. It's a great way to balance the primary/secondary weapons. Ya know, for Soldier. *glares at Hunter pistol* That said Hunter's teleport turning you toward your target is chef's kiss so I can't stay mad at it. Great analysis/showcase of the game, I'm excited for the game to explode when it fully releases. Also thanks for the shout-out that I definitely didn't see. :P Was a nice surprise.

What caught my eye on this game when looking at the steam page was that the gameplay had the same feel like borderlands, where it feels constant and you get stronger weapons as you keep playing.

If you like games with constant action and progression, you should look more into the roguelike/roguelite genre. One of my favorite things about them is that the combat usually feels very satisfying and there's really good progression where you consistently get stronger and stronger. If you specifically want more FPS games like that (other than Deadlink), I recommend Gunfire Reborn. If you want something with similar gameplay as Borderlands, that's your best bet.

It really is the Borderlands comvat loop boiled down and concentrated if you look at it. It really looks like they got really close to Borderlands 2 (which is probably Borderlands at its best tbh). You even have a clone ability like 3 does. A lot of the game is interacting element effects and chunky damage like BL did its stuff. Except you have way more movement which BL lacked.

The best part of this game is that they let you save in between every single arena, something I feel should be a necessity in roguelikes. These games can be physically exhausting on long runs and being able to take a break and come back later is very helpful

This just gets me thinking, are there any conventional roguelikes you're into? Whether it be Nethack/Slash'em, ADOM, Doom the Roguelike (or its spiritual successor by the same dev, Jupiter Hell), Dwarf Fortress (sorta, adventure mode is more roguelike than fortress mode), or Cataclysm (if you do look into that, I'd say go for Bright Nights over Dark Days Ahead), whatever may have stood out to you.

You should try force reboot an fps roguelite where your hp is constantly going down and you have to kill enemies to regen at the end of every floor you get an upgrade that always comes with a downside like your aiming cursor moving around paired with getting a shotgun its a lot of fun.

It feels much more like doom eternal than overkill. No style system, semi limited ammo, timed abilities, priming enemies to drop armor, dashes and slower movement like doom compared to the speed and sliding of overkill, etc. even the shotguns feel similar.

To keep is simple: RogueLIKEs mean that if you die, you need to restart from square 1 and you don't keep anything from in between playthroughs. Sometimes you'll keep stuff if you win, but not always. RogueLITEs usually have a progression system, so even if you fail the run, you can upgrade your gear and tools in between them.

It's good to have some shorter form vids again (though 20 mins is not that short) as they are a wee bit more digestible during the busy day. As much as the deep dives are cool, for myself I tend to watch them to see if I missed something in a game I already own or just to view some confirmation bias. Shorter vids that give just enough info to hook are more likely to make me want to buy a title and this, something that was only sort of on my radar, is now thoroughly grabbing my attention. Will likely give it a shot next payday.

I think I know what you mean when you say the lore is too deep. The Halo series has some of the best lore out there, but they built up to it. When the first Destiny game released, they tried to have all this lore all at once, and I think that's what contributed to the game sucking so much.
