Lack of storage with an N64 cartridge was why the shotgun and super shotgun do not have proper reload animations, as well as missing chaingun guys, revenants, and archviles. The atmosphere Doom 64 had was a major and welcome departure though, and was slower paced than OG Doom.

How to open the cage in the level before last (No Escape)... Take the teleporter located in the cavern in the red radiation pit. This takes you inside of a fortress-like area. Head for the open balcony area in the fortress and look to the right. You will see a switch set on top of a cutout. Strafe jump onto the cutout and activate the switch. This opens a wall that leads to the back section of said cutout where another switch is placed. Jump off the cutout and head for the cavern in the red radiation pit again to go back to the fortress area. Enter the back of the cutout through said open wall and activate said switch. This switch opens the cage housing the cyberdemons which you must slay to end the map. The switch on the outside that you need to elevate yourself to reach only lowers the pillar which has the rocket launcher perched on top of it. To reach it, there are four outside elevators in between the main elevators. The one closest to the rocket launcher pillar will raise you high enough to jump on to the platform to activate the switch.

referring to 14:00 there's an official 8-level pack introduced in Xbox 360 port of Doom II (then Doom 3: BFG Edition) called "No Rest for the Living", its final level has you pitted against a Cyberdemon wandering down dark crammed hallways while also surrounded by Imps blocking your paths, these walls however (or more like giant red tombs) has switches that you can press to lower (it takes some time to do so) and freeing up fighting space and revealing some goodies (or Imps) inside

Pain elementals are undead cacodemons, which is pretty interesting, not sure why they have hair though. As for the super shotgun, the reloading animation was left out due to limitations in cartridge space, some people have made their own iteration of a reload animation for source port mods such as Brutal Doom 64. The cartridge limitation is also the reason why the regular shotgun has no cocking animation. In addition for the re-release they added more levels to the game which i think you should check out, should you have the time or interest.

Doom 64 is so good. I've played through it completely 3 times, each on a different platform. I originally beat it using Doom 64 EX, then Brutal Doom 64, then the PS4 rerelease. I tried the PC version, but its controls feel so off for some reason, weirdly floaty. Ive also attempted playing the N64 version, owned it at one point, but never got very far. The game does have some flaws though. You really start feeling the limited monster roster in the later levels, it turns into what feels like fighting a Baron around every corner. The levels also can have a lot of switch hunting and puzzle solving that isn't always clear how to solve. There are several levels you will be aimlessly wondering around because you didn't see the switch behind that random column in that one room, and even if you do it isn't always clear what it actually did. The N64 version is also insanely dark. Also, who ever designed the levels was definitely a fan of the "fortress surrounded by water" theme.

I still play this game on the PC, and it's still as fun as it ever was. Doom 64 is different in that everything about the game is dark in nature. From the music, to the environments, to the enemy spawns, it's just a different Doom game altogether. Oddly enough, I've been wondering if anyone is considering remaking Doom 64 in the Doom Eternal environmental. I know Doom Eternal can be modded. To what extent, I don't know. Either way, I think it would be nice to see this classic remade in a modern engine.

The actual Doom 3 is a spin-off with a brand new marine going through a demonic attack on Mars, while the real DooMGuY is still in HELL because of his DooM 64 quest in my opinion. That’s how I see things with the DooM timeline, and DooM Eternal explained a whole lot of the story and I love the inclusion of the Mykars and Night Sentinels. It opened up a whole lot of whole new characters and lifeforms throughout the entirety of the universe.

I believe Midway did initally pitch this AS Doom 3 during development, but it had to be N64 exclusive as Midway were part of the "Nintendo Dream Team" and were contracted to make a couple of exclusive games for the system, otherwise they'd have just ported the PS1/Saturn Doom over. the pain elementals look like they'd be weird cacodemons, and the cacodemons in doom 64 for look like they'd be pain elementals.

In many ways Doom64 feels closer to Metroid Prime with it's ambient music and threatening atmosphere.

Doom 64 is really good. Like, really really good. It might arguably have the best maps of all the games. Fantastic music. Looks and plays very well. They took some nice liberties with the monsters. If you like Doom, you need to play it.

Interesting enough, some cut demons included a Hellhound and a female demon. Now what they would have look like is anyone guess. But with Doom 4(2016) and Eternal out and playing them, I think I can guess that the Summoner was based for the discarded female demon of Doom 64. And the Marauder's wolf is what the Hellhound might have been.

Im relatively new to doom I played a few missions of doom eternal and fell in love with the soundtrack and one day I seen that doom 64 a title I never seen was on Xbox and I didn’t think I’d like it but damn old doom just feels so good it’s a bit confusing but hey it’s the coolest game I’ve played in the past year and thanks to guys like you in the Community it drives me to want to play and finish the game and play other dooms before and after this title... thank you Conrad

Regarding rewards in secret levels, I always felt the level itself is the prize. If playing the game is rewarding, then getting to play one more level is reward enough. Secret levels that seamlessly blend in with the campaign, like Doom‘s E1M9 or Duke‘s E1L6, are my favourite kind. But secret levels are also an opportunity to try a gimmick or level concept that doesn‘t really blend in with the rest of the campaign. If you have a gimmick that might or might not be cool in your game, I‘d rather you put it in an optional level that can easily be bypassed, and hand the choice over to me. I love the Wolfenstein levels in Doom 2, so I always go through them. I don‘t like Spin Cycle in Duke 3D, so I just don‘t go there. Simple as that.

Doom 64 is a ton like Marathon 2: durandal. Switch hunting? Check! Massive maze-like levels? Check! Atmospheric focus? Definitely check! But Marathon 2 and 3 have no music at all, but i run the doom soundtrack in the background on KZbin anyway.
