FILM DESCRIPTION:
Karate master Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) goes to Boston to attend a military reunion. There, he visits with Louisa (Constance Towers), the widow of his former commander, and meets her granddaughter, Julie (Hilary Swank). Julie's parents were recently killed in a car accident, and she is still reeling from the loss. When Julie surprises Miyagi with her knowledge of karate, he takes her to a Buddhist monastery for training and to help her come to terms with her angst.

It's great that Daniel was at least mentioned on this movie. However, since Daniel is not on this movie, I'm only guessing that he's back in California either working in the banzai tree shop and/or if he decided to start college (he did say in the beginning of the third film that he needed a break from college). I can only hope at this point he's not getting problems from John Kreese, Terry Silver, and Mike Barnes not having Mr. Miyagi to protect him.

+STEJTHEGREATEST If Daniel is being used as a dartboard in the dojo, the only ones who would be throwing darts at him and/or punching and kicking him is John Kreese, Terry Silver, and Mike Barnes since the Cobra Kai dojo is probably out of business by this point. However, Terry Silver did tell Daniel that Daniel has two choices to either fight one fight on one day (the tournament) or fight everyday for the rest of his life. So for that, Daniel attended the tournament to fight on that one day so they hopefully are not causing problems to him anymore just for attending the tournament. Also, when Mr. Miyagi said before he lived with a friend named Daniel, at this point maybe Daniel and his mom moved back to their home state which is New Jersey and with Daniel moved away and probably away from Terry Silver, John Kreese, and Mike Barnes, Daniel is probably safe which gives Miyagi the opportunity to take a trip to Boston. Otherwise if Daniel was still living in California, maybe Miyagi would have taken Daniel with him to Boston to protect him so Daniel doesn't get problems from John Kreese, Terry Silver, and Mike Barnes.

+jerrygodeep That's unknown because after Daniel won the tournament on the third film, people in the crowd were throwing the Cobra Kai t-shirts back at John Kreese and Terry Silver which kind of shows that Cobra Kai is out of business forever and all John Kreese and Terry Silver could do is just sit in the Cobra Kai dojo doing nothing. (That's probably what John Kreese was doing as seen in the beginning of the third film since he mentioned to Terry Silver that no student has walked into the dojo for nine months to attend a class after Daniel won the tournament on the first film). Hopefully during this movie all three of them decided to let it go about Daniel since Terry Silver told Daniel that he has two choices to either fight one fight on one day (the tournament) or fight everyday for the rest of his life. So for that, Daniel attended the tournament so hopefully they are not bothering Daniel anymore.

Aside from a couple unnecessarily forced fight scenes and the poorly written conflict arc between the students and Michael Ironside's character, this was a nice movie, especially when you see it through the lens of a father and daughter relationship. There were some very touching moments. It had the potential to be so much better, but for what it is, it's a cool addition to the Karate Kid canon. I hope Hilary Swank joins the Cobra Kai series. I'd be interested to see how they could include her in the series.

The first one is the original that began the series so that makes it especially important. In the world of Hollywood the original movies are usually the most remembered and most successful financially. Hollywood knows this but keeps bringing on the sequels but I guess some of them do ok and I guess you gotta at least try. God bless!

I remember watching this movie as well, I probably thought it was a Disney Channel Original Movie. I lost connection to this movie keeping on wondering what's that one movie where a sandbag hits her, however when I started the Karate Kid movies I learned about all the movies and began watching "The Next Karate Kid" and then I saw so many familiar scenes. I was happy that Daniel was mentioned in this movie. Though this movie is not good. This one in the third one had its flaws this one had it because it's no sequel in my opinion. You can't have a sequel without Ralph Macchio that's why I wasn't it called The Karate Kid Part 4. And Ralph Macchio was in the first three of course.

The Next Karate Kid was considerably better than the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid. That film should have never been made in the first place.

I'll admit that The Next Karate Kid is the worst film in the original Karate Kid franchise. I highly doubt that Jaden Smith will ever rise to the ranks of his father which would explain why his acting career hasn't skyrocketed like his father's acting career did. Will Smith has charisma while Jaden Smith just comes across as an awkward person in his movies. Plus, he posts strange comments on social media sites. Jackie Chan tends to give an entertaining performance in the majority of the movies he appears in. I grew up watching his action films and Jackie Chan's ability to perform his own stunts is impressive and shows his dedication to the film industry. There was nothing remotely wrong with the original Karate Kid movie. If Hollywood is truly running out of original ideas then they should just take bad movies and remake them into good movies. They can start with the infamous Fantastic Four franchise.

I'll agree that my comment is a good one. My observations in regards to the Karate Kid franchise reminded me to add the original Karate Kid movie to my DVD collection. I grew up watching it with my mother on VHS as a kid and I've been busy replacing my VHS collections with DVD and Blu Ray discs since that medium doesn't cost much anymore. I prefer to have hard copies of movies and games. Stores that sell used DVDs are a good place to look when it comes to finding older films. There's a store called FYE that's known for carrying movies that would normally be difficult to find. A lot of great movies were released in the 1980's and have become classics as the decades have gone by. The only reason people would check out The Next Karate Kid is to see where Hilary Swank's career started and to witness the final appearance of the Mr. Miyagi character. Regardless of the story, I'll admit that Pat Morita gave a good performance in this movie and in the Karate Kid franchise in general.
