Sir John Hackett's book? You might have to change the lead in to say something along the lines of "Optimistic after their victory over Ukraine and certain that they solved their shortcomings found in the early days of that war, the new Russian president looked to expand on Putin's gains and further expand Russia back to its historical borders." It wouldn't change the later plot which ever side you intend to have win. Overconfidence can go either way.

I love this series. However, one problem I see at the beginning is that Estonia's Amari Lennubaas Airbase is over 200 kilometers from the Russian border. How did the Russians "quietly" infiltrate a NATO country. I'm not saying it's not possible, but that should have been explained. Moreover, the idea that it would be "lightly defended" when it hosts NATO fighter wings is laughable.
I stopped watching at the hilarious "elite Russian assault team". LOL.

Very cool; great editing, interesting timeline, good choice of (AI?) narration. Some (hopefully constructive) criticism, if I may? I realize that this definitely isn’t the topic of the video, but I, for one, would like to see a bit more backstory. As-is, it was essentially “Russia faced disaster in Ukraine, brought in a new leader, he made the country rich.” All of which is absolutely plausible (well, the “disaster” is actually authentic) given Russia’s share of natural resources and her relatively unique geographic position. But after seeing what Russia can (or rather, cannot) do, it’s borderline laughable that they’re opting to go toe-to-toe with NATO. Not without knowing at least some of what has happened in the ‘next’ 30 years. Again, I realize your intent isn’t to document this, but it would add a nice layer of realism. Even something like Russia playing nice for the next few decades, all the while they are controlled by a cabal of hard-liners pining for the days of Soviet/Imperial hegemony. They re-structured their economy via unprecedented co-operation with Europe. China takes a similar route, outwardly going through their own version of Perestroika, launching a ‘goodwill’ tour of the globe that lasts decades, nominally recognizing Taiwanese sovereignty. NATO is cautious through the early 2020s, but finally let their guard down after rapidly increasing inflation, growing internal unrest among several key members, and demands in the U.S. for more social spending leads to massive military cuts… which finally leads to NATO more-or-less accepting that China and Russia no longer pose a threat. Which is precisely what both governments were waiting for. And yet, they still bide their time, hoping to lull NATO even deeper into their false of security, waiting all the way until the early 2030s to execute their plan. I think a description such as this would add a lot to your future scenarios, and it would only add a couple of minutes to your introduction video. Anyways, I’ve said my piece, looking forward to watching the rest of the series; Thanks for reading!
@flatcirclehistory Жыл бұрын
Constructive criticism and suggestions are always welcome. Thanks for taking the time to watch and write an informative critique. Your points are all well taken. I had to strike a balance on the opening episodes between grabbing viewer's attention, while providing enough (initial) backstory for it to be plausible. Trust me... I LOVE a good a good backstory. In fact, in other writing projects, that element has come to be a fault, becoming an initial data dump that, though rich in plausible detail, can be boring and academic to a reader/viewer. Best to dole out the backstory incrementally. That is my goal here over the coming episodes. One item, in particular, gets addressed in Episode 4 coming soon. Lastly, if this series catches fire (SPREAD THE WORD!) then a prologue series is always a possibility. Keep the comments coming and thanks again for watching.

The danger of escalation would be proportional to the desire of the Russians to avoid defeat. During the Cold War, many thought that US-NATO forces would be forced to resort to tactical nuclear weapons to offset the numerically superiority of Soviet armor. ( I recall reading a US Army document back in the 1980s that essentially assumed that NATO and US forces would resort to battlefield nuclear weapons within the first few hours of a Soviet thrust through the Fulda Gap.) Now we were preparing to do that in order to prevent Soviet-Warsaw Pact forces from reaching the Rhine before American reenforcements could arrive in Europe. That was how far we were willing to go to avoid defeat. If the Russians were to invade the Baltic States, which would invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, one would assume the Russians want to "win" bad enough to accept that as a consequence of their invasion. It would also suggest that they have contemplated an escalatory response (in this case, the use of tactical nuclear weapons,) should they begin to lose. And they would lose. Russian conventional forces are simply outclassed by those of the US and NATO (if the Russians didn't know this before, they certainly know now.)

Authoritarian regimes are extremely dangerous - it is about power and control and at all costs. Democracies simply require forcing the will of the people. While this is still true of authoritrian regimes, the regimes (1) usually exist where the culture is one of abused citizens not willing stand up for themselves, and (2) the regimes have far more latitude keeping their slaves, er, citiziens in check, (3) level-headed politicians are far fewer in number and power, making reasoned calculations nigh impossible to rely on. The only way to keep that escalation threat in check is to make a strong, united front early on and keep the pressure on. It's expensive and exhausting. But the alternatives are far, far worse.
@rungfang27 Жыл бұрын
Military no, political yes. But still the same a loss,lose the people lose the war.
@jamesrogers47 Жыл бұрын
Having seen the performance of Russian conventional forces in their Ukrainian adventure, one wonders just how much a threat those forces were during the last decade or two of the Cold War (say, 1972-1992.) Yes, they had considerable armor mass to punch into Western Europe, but the US and NATO had invested heavily in countering such an armored thrust. If the Soviet army's logistics and combined arms capabilities were as bad as the Russian Federation's, after some initial success, US-NATO forces may have been able to stop them cold long before they reached the Rhine. A scenario such as this, in which the Russians attempt to reassert control over the Baltic states, would all but certainly result in a Russian defeat, for the same reasons that Russia has not been able to achieve its tactical and strategic goals in Ukraine. Russian tactics and strategies have always been dependent upon the weight of numbers, their willingness to throw away Russian lives in staggering numbers (and the willingness of Russians to accept those casualties.) The Russians no longer have the population of youngish men to throw into a meat grinder and clearly, the average Russian is no longer willing to make such sacrifices.
@flatcirclehistory Жыл бұрын
All good points. For this series I'm approaching it that the Russians have (enough) quality and quantity to move fast and initially break things... but that's a far different capability than breaking and holding. What comes after that starts to get trickier, strategically and politically for both sides. That's where mistakes, both big and small, can push the situation into something far worse.

Russia took the military airport of Kiev in 2 hours and they were there for a month!..USA needed 500.000 soldiers +450.000 allies and one month + 10 days to take the Kuwait airport, also they needed 15 days to take the Bagdad airport!...so stop cheap propaganda because if Russia would have used 950.000 soldiers instead of 120.000, then Kiev and Kharkov would have been taken and Maidan regime would be ended!
@mengshun Жыл бұрын
One minor cherry picked example does not outweight the colossal ineptitude and corruption of the Russian violation of Ukraine. The if-then simply didnt happen and what does that say about Russian leadership and planning? If they invaded the Baltic and line up their vehicles like the did to Kiev, rest assured there would be a 40km trench of dead vehicles and soldiers and with that, a collapse of the entire regional sector. And NATO would have no qualms pouring through that gap. Now the risk of nuclear war would be stupendously high, but maybe Russia and China need to rethink why using military force is NOT a good idea. Maybe hard work to invest in the country and its people but hey, greed and power.

Russia's military actions are focused around its domestic security, consolidating its position over former Warsaw pact countries such as Georgia and preventing them from entering into alliances with NATO, which is the primary motivation of the Ukraine invasion. The U.S. on the other hand has primarily intervened in countries far outside of its sphere of influence that do not pose a threat to its own national security, particularly the ones that want to stop using the dollar to buy and sell their oil (Iraq, Libya, etc.). It's almost certain that America will launch another clumsy invasion, perhaps in Iran or wherever, and this time the BRICS nations will threaten military defense and aid in support of the invaded nation, and it will all kick off from there.

Nice video but two big problems: (1) Russia lacks the ability and resources. Even for its half-measure war in Ukraine, it needed the USA to stupidly buy $160 billion in Russian fuel in 2021, with which sad old Putin prepared for war. There are no more "billions" lying around. (2) China does not need to join this risky fool's errand. It has already won the economic and political war, taken control of key bodies like the WHO, in no little way helped by a certain lab-leak incident in November 2020. Why would it risk what it worked tirelessly for, by joining Russia? It will eventually get Taiwan anyway, and it doesn't need Taiwan, it already dominates the world agenda. In light of the above, your scenario will never happen. You need idiots in charge in both Beijing and Moscow, simultaneously, its unlikely. A rogue group in Chechnya etc., or nation like Korea or Iran, going nuclear is a much less impossible scenario. The Middle East is where it's at.

I love the Ideas and story but with the level of incompetence Russia has shown in the Current Ukraine war I think WW3 May need a different player to FAFO.

Now that Putin is Re-elected this is definitely a different timeline.
