I believe NF wrote that song from when he was in therapy. Maybe an exercise in therapy to say what you would like to tell your younger self. It's like the first verse was him taking to himself as a child, verse 2 was his teenage self, then the last verse his adult self.
@RetroQuinReacts5 ай бұрын
That very well could be the case. He done a great job with the timeline throughout the song

From reading alot of the books and the thought process of how to take your thoughts back pin point moments that you realized that you started experiencing stuff and 6 was the age that was the point where he would start to coach himself and catch before 12 or 13 when started to get into trouble.

@ianhoffmann2179, you're right. After his perception tour, he went to a therapy camp or therapy getaway thing, and this was an exercise that they did. Of course, NF being the brilliant artist that he is, he turned it into another amazing song. He talked about it on an interview that he did.

I'm telling the real talk in my life!!!
@scottralitz429 ай бұрын
This is therapy... Have a talk with your younger self. Befriend yourself. Had a lot of trauma as a child & didn't realize how much I was disgusted in my younger self, until I did this. Self-destructive thoughts haunted me in later life!

His parents separated "Mom and dad are not together, they took different routes." When it was mom's turn to pick up nate, she'd hide her boyfriend in the trunk because he was a shady dude. Once she picked up nate, she'd drive a ways down the road, pull over and pop the trunk so the boyfriend could get out. She did that so noone saw her shady boyfriend which would've prompted nate's dad to not allow her to see nate. Great reaction!

Everyone talks about "Wisdom comes with age" I'm a firm believer that wisdom comes with experience. Some people have a lot more experience with things at a young age than others. Nate is in his 20s for all these albums and all these gems that he drops.

If/when you listen to trauma, keep in mind the last line from this song. The track is young Nate talking to older Nate. This man has many layers 😊

I think the last line is very true. The simple question „what or who would I like to become?“ gives you a lot of motivation and a direction. A friend of mine quit smoking with this method and began as a teacher.

I think Nate had either admitted himself into a Psych Ward or visited a psych ward (or it was during therapy) that he got asked if he were to write a letter to his younger self, what would he say and what advice would he give? I’ve seen plenty of people have this theory on bigger channels- and the background noise in the very beginning of the song kinda goes on to solidify this in a way- So if you think about it- this entire song IS a letter to his younger self (obviously) There’s a double at the very end “That’s why I’m always looking down on you, I know it hurts” because he has to show sympathy but ALSO because younger nate is obviously shorter than current Nate so he has to “look down” At him

I appreciate u for sharing this perspective. It makes me look at this song in a completely different way now
