Are you a fan of the NFL and curious about its plans to expand internationally? In this video, we will explore the pros and cons of having an NFL franchise in London, one of the most likely locations for a new team. We will also look at some of the challenges and opportunities that come with bringing American football to a global audience.
The NFL has been hosting regular-season games in London since 2007, and the experiment has been a success. The league has announced international expansion plans in eight countries, including the U.K., Germany, Mexico, and Canada. But is London ready to have its own NFL team? And how would that affect the rest of the league and the sport?

One of the bigger issues would getting it cleared by the NFLPA. Can't imagine many players would be too thrilled by the prospect of being traded to a team on a whole different continent.

On the topic of logistics: There are already international leagues in other sports held every year, and they all have their own way of making the logistics work. There are alot of clever solutions. I'm personally a fan of the way VNL organizes their competition.

That's a great example. If the NFL is determined to make it happen (which it looks like they are), they will figure it out. They have enough capital to do so.

I love how they worked out the schedules this year so that a team gets two wks across the pond. There are a LOT of NFL/American football fans all over the world. The money definitely isn't the issue. However, teams can't pester cities to fund brand new stadiums; they're already built and fans are already showing up. I imagine behind-the-scene contracts may be sticking points with vendors, stadiums, and other wealthy "investors" who all want as large of a share of the pie as possible. The other thing I'm not sure most of us have thought of is whether, with these international expansion teams/divisions, the draft will ever include international players, and how that would work - especially since the NCAA holds our unofficial farm teams. We do already have players from other countries and sports, like the Seahawks' punter Dickson, but to my knowledge none of them were drafted. Anyways, I'm here for it!

I studied for six months in Northern Ireland, the Super Bowl was on during that time and every bar was PACKED there’s absolutely a market for American football over there. And I am very much pro expansion. I hope to see European teams competing for the Lombardi in my life time. But I don’t expect that anytime soon I still think it would be great

With Brexit, it may even be tougher to have an NFL division in Europe - especially since England is not in the EU anymore. There's just even more red tape and logistics that need to be worked out. Adding an expansion team in Mexico (and/or Canada) is probably an easier lift

we also share Time Zones with Canada and Mexico. teams would only have to travel farther south or farther North.

I think we'll probably see more international games. It's an easier sell now with a 17 game schedule. If we get a single international team it would be more likely to be in Mexico or Canada. If they want to base a team in Europe I do think they should go all the way and make a whole division. It makes more sense than just a single team. The logistics would be tough, but if the accounting and finance people at the NFL were to say it would be profitable I think they could/would make it happen.

Just found your channel via the chain gang video, have now looked through - great stuff, hope you keep it going and see good growth. Already really well edited and scripted, cheers!. Just a though, as a UK based Chiefs fan, most UK fans have already picked a team. To change allegiance would be challenging, might take a while to build support here in London for the home team, especially if it's not as good.

I agree. A London based franchise would need a deep playoff run in order to gain a true following. Thanks for the support! Truly appreciated

We don't really need to go back that far, just look at the European League of Football, specially the resurrected NFL Europe franchises and the new ones in France and Austria. For all it's failures, there's some franchises that show major potential. I think that the success of the Rhein Fire, Hamburg Sea Devils and some other ELF franchises is enough proof that a NFL franchise in Europe could be a success. When you got packed stadiums (look at the record breaking attendances in Hamburg and Duisburg) for a local rivalry games in a semi-pro league with little marketing and media attention, you know there's a sustainable appetite for the NFL. Not to mention the Championship Game which sold out, had more than 30K fans in the stadium and should be even bigger in 2024. Travel is such a remarkable hurdle but I think it would be possible with a good system and 1 or preferably 2 divisions in Europe.

I agree. I personally don't think 1 European team would work. However, a division or something that resembles one, I believe will.

I think in Britain we will still prefer sports that flow a lot better, such as actual Football or Rugby, as American football is very stop start but it could still grow to be very popular if they were to find a way to make it flow better. Also a recommendation, the way America hyper-commercialises sports will not get you very far with exporting these sports to Europe, we get annoyed by the amount of commercialisation in actual Football and in comparison American Football is 10 times more commercialised and doesn’t have the same cultural or historical backing behind it that they have in America or that other sports have here to make us overlook that.

Its hard to see it happen now. More international games would work, but its too soon for a full division. It will take time if they want to make it happen. Darts is playing the long game with PDC expanding the sport, and it is slowly paying off

American Football is major part of American culture that I don't think will really ever get even half as popular in other countries. Sports culture and appreciation is something that people grow up with and besides ice hockey, American Football has the highest bar of entry. There is so much expensive protective equipment and gear needed that I think most other countries would go a similar sport with a much lower bar of entry instead (such as rugby). Right now there are some big fans of the NFL in other countries, but I think it's just going to be a fad. Once the excitement period ends, they will move on to other sports.

The only way this works is if the teams on our side of the pond get the same level of support and the American side is ready to subsidize the teams here in Europe for a long time to come. Or it'll just end up the same as last time.

💯 silver lining is these expansion teams would be part of the actual league, unlike last time. Still, massive hill to climb. Any international expansion team(s) would need a deep playoff run in order for everyone to take said team(s) seriously.

Jags are going to Europe for sure. They absolutely dominate. I’m excited for it for sure. I mean, football overseas is a completely different sport, so it could change the meaning in a way. Make it a worldwide household sport! On the other hand, idk if other countries would like their athletes getting cte like the US… so idk how it’ll go on that end in terms of their regulations

Move the jaguars to London. Give Toronto a new franchise team. Create new franchises in Berlin, Oslo and one in the south of France or Barcelona.

The NFL needs to stop being greedy. Keep it up with sending a few games each year overseas, but dont push it too far by creating anothrr division. Just be happy with 32 teams, and 18 games. It is a long enough season, and considering the profits you make, the players till dont get paid enough!

The Falcons should honestly host games in israel every year and here is why 1. Falcons finished 7-10 3 years straight tribute to the israel-gaza war which started in exactly october 7th 7/10 and the 3 years represent the 3 times israel had been independent country in their hist 2. An israel soccer club Hapoel Beer sheva has their stadium called turner field or turner stadium and Atlanta Braves had a stadium had called Turner Field so mybe the Falcons would want to host in Beer sheva because of it Beer Sheva and Atlanta are both south in their countries 3. Israel has a dancing club in Tel Aviv called "Atlanta And with the Falxons beeing a cursed franchise like how israel are were as a country in their history iys a match madw in heaven

NFL won’t work in Europe. It has been tried and it didn’t work. The fanbase isn’t that strong enough internationally, whilst there have been one of games in Germany and the UK, it doesn’t prove having regular games in Europe would work. American football isn’t a global sport!
