90's NFL culture was vastly different than what we have today. It was a time before social media, and even the internet to an extent.
It was just you... and the game.
I sorta took a more chill approach to the beginning of this video, so let me know what you thought. I would really appreciate it!

Commercial breaks weren't the only way we knew the time. The play-by-play guys where trained to mention the game and play clock on almost every down. Plus we always had a good idea of what it was in our heads.

Play by Play guys were awesome back then, nowadays they talk about social issues , what is happening on the sidelines and how a cold front affects kicking. Back in the day they were all actual football guys that talked about the game, hence why people love Romo now.

All the multiple scores etc are driven by fantasy football. I’m one of the rare ones that think it’s absolutely ridiculous but I’m glad I can see what’s going on around the league as soon as I tune in. Who’s doing what etc.

I remember that moment when Elway leaped forward in the Super Bowl. The NFC had won 13 straight Super Bowls at that point, and Elway had lost three of them. At age 37 it felt like this was the moment he'd been waiting for his entire life. I wasn't even a Broncos fan, but I remember that moment really fired me up. It was a seminal moment in football at that time.

Man, I played on that old turf several times and it's worst. Turf burns are like carpet burns where you were running as fast as you could before landed. Turf shoes felt like running with planks of wood on your feet. When I finally got to the new turf, I was blown away... except for the part where they had no idea how much rubber to use to maintain the field so you'd come off covered in it. It also absorbs massive amounts of heat so the field is boiling hot during summer practices.

It's all about be lightweight now. Back in the 80's and 90's players were playing on astro turf plus the game was more physical alots of hits and rough tackling. So players believed more protection to withstand the beatings they took. Eric dickerson wore alot of pads but was still faster than most players in the league. Also it was about intimidation look at Charles haley with his neck pad made him look more fierce than he already was or Brian Cox's Washboard made him look cool as well as fierce. my favorite are the neck rolls and neck collars put those on DB's and fullbacks along with linebackers it gives a great look.

The majority of those 90's Lions teams were pretty solid actually. Got to the NFC Title game in 92 and made the wild card playoffs 6 times in the decade. No they were never legitimate super bowl contenders and never made it past the wild card but 6 playoff appearances in a 9 year span is at least not bad.

Run heavy offenses. Even the big name offenses of the 90s like the Cowboys and 49ers, when they got a lead on you, you got a very heavy dose of soul crushing running. The Cowboys of the early-mid 1990s, I remember when they had a lead in the 4th quarter, a game where Madden said, "You're going to get a heavy, heavy dose of Emmitt." Today's NFL, teams putting away the opposition with running is looked at as a novelty. Another big thing in the modern NFL is that teams stat pad: They'll keep the starting QB in during blowouts to keep piling on the stats. 2 TD lead entering the 4th during the 1990s? Teams will pull the starter QB out of the game when the 4th started. Today? Keep running it up. It was hilarious when this bit the Raiders in the ass a few years ago. The Raiders were big favorites to go to the super bowl. Late in the season they were blowing out some team but they kept Carr in to keep running the score up, keep padding the stats to make it all look better. Then he got injured and lost for the season, a few week out from the playoffs. Morons. You can also see that in the value of Running Backs. There used to be more feature RBs in the 90s. This carried on into the early 2000s with names like Tomlinson. But these guys were a dying breed. Rare is the "Workhorse" or "Feature Back" today. We got some awesome guys like Henry but a feature back like him is rare. There's been more sharing of the running workload with multiple backs today. Probably healthier for the RB today, but again, it's different now.

Contemporary football is more about spread and flood offenses to kind of dink and donk your way down the field with a seam or two for long passes. In other words, it's a passing league. Back then, it was more run heavy with verticals once the defense started to get gassed out. Defense now is more Cover 1 and Cover 3, which kind of opens you up to high verticals and the dink and donk against Cover 3 is a chess match. The reality of a lot of scrambling QBs means the defense is also generally down a guy since someone is often stuck in a spy so you're seeing safeties adapt as hybrid players. Back then, it was a lot more cover 2 and cover 4 to stop the verticals and the run respectively with each defensive player knowing their exact role.
@DaSoda70
@DaSoda70 2 жыл бұрын
@@Warmaker01 Late post, but it's kind of funny you mention the contemporary dual back system. Even though singleback was really common back then, at least fullbacks were still a thing. Anymore, it seems like teams are just sticking a big tight end in there and not even using them to run block half the time.

BOTH OF HIS KNEECAPS were found by his upper thighs. Double rupture of his patella tendons. Just grotesque. There were literal seams that created gaps in the field on the surface. Just awful. If you got tackled, you got severe carpet burns or worse, peeled flesh. Some guys even got staph infection playing on that crap. If you think the 90's were a savage era of tackling for the NFL then maybe you've never heard of defenses from the 70's like: The Steel Curtain (Pittsburgh) Purple People Eaters (Minnesota) The Orange Crush (Denver) The Doomsday Defense (Dallas) The Gritz Blitz (Atlanta 1977) and the '85 Bears...just to name a few lol. I would recommend you go back and watch players like, Deacon Jones, "Mean" Joe Green, Danny White Jack Lambert, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Reggie White, Mel Blount. These are all vicious defensive players from the 60's, 70's and 80's. These defenses and defensive players paved the way for every defense in the 90's. There would be no popularity of the NFL without the era of these past defenses. In fact, several players from these eras of defenses have all claimed they couldn't and WOULDN'T play in today's NFL. Hell, Golden butt Boy Tom Brady wouldn't last one damn quarter against any of these defenses!! He'd be out of the game by mid-1st qtr. Yes, the 90's had their respective defenses, I'll grant you that; however, hard nosed defensive football was defined in the 60's & 70's and trickled down to the 90's. Sadly, because of the pro offensive rule changes since 1994, we will never see an era of defenses like we did starting in the 60's & 70's EVER AGAIN!!!

My old man played in a fantasy league all thru the 90’s and up until 2015 when they stopped. $1500 to the league winner and bragging rights, year in and year out. They even had a trophy made. I remember dad calling in his lineup by 1230 every week to the commish, then I’d be tasked to write down stat lines for his team and his opponents, checking them in the newspaper box score the following day. Philly enquirer, sporting news, and USA Today sports section were gold. They were a close group of guys and everyone respected the sanctity of honesty and the fun of it. Priest Holmes won my dad that league three years in a row. Also, the same guys would have parties every Sunday to watch the sopranos on HBO when it was fresh. Best TV show in recorded human history.

@@BadMoonRising92 Yeah, insane to even use fake ground in high level sports, but I guess with indoor stadiums and without retractable rooves that it would cost a bit to grow it under artificial lighting. @@1983jblack You're probably right, but I'm not sure how often others played on it. Houston was the first to use it and that team would have played on it much more often than others. I'm not sure when they changed the formula and all that or which teams added it. Not all teams have it now. Maybe it's just the way he worked out. He had giant quads and maybe it was just heavy the weight he was squatting. I know Ronnie Coleman tore his hips up doing heavy squats..although I've heard him say it's just a hereditary thing. Maybe they're both just in denial? Their style of play was different but everyone was running on it at some point, although running backs got it the worst because of all those tackles.

Now, games are simply controlled by the hold. It's obvious that the NFL is trying to create games that are either closer or a team heavily betted on from beating the spreads it appears. I watched Three games this last Sunday and three of the teams had over 100 yards in penalties and 'Holding' being the number one called penalty. When they replay the alleged hold, it didn't even happen. It's simply unwatchable anymore. The three best months (weather wise) a year are during football season and I'm not wasting my time anymore. RIP NFL.
