If I’m drafting today between a rookie Crosby or Mcdavid to be honest I’d like to go with Crosby. The only reason I’d ever take Connor before Sid is Crosbys concussions. If there are no injuries I go Sid all day. But it’s so close. If you add injury it’s mcdavid. If you take away them concussions Sidney may have won another cup

Being from Pittsburgh, my favorite thing about sid is that he had an absolute MOUNTAIN of hype coming out of the draft… and he actually *exceeded* expectations. Folks forget that he didn’t go to a great team. They just lucked out with the entire core and he actually lived up to all the hype. In every way.

Thank you! That is the thing that makes him so great. No player ever faced a more difficult mix of expectations, pressure and injuries. And yet Sid delivered BIG TIME. In a manner that is unprecedented. With almost all individual throhies, all team trophies. And so many great moments too, like the SO Goal in the first Winter Classic or the FUCKING GOLDEN GOAL. It has to be scripted. That is his argument for the GOAT.
@zeusthedrumlord547

@88T I agree they were stacked but you also have to remember that every draft pick can bust. Malkin, Fleury, and letang (among others) weren’t drafted guaranteed to pan out. Many more don’t than do. They were stacked because every pick in that time frame was a big hit lol. That doesn’t always happen, and there’s an argument sid helped those guys turn into what they did. That isn’t to give him all the credit for other player’s successes but do you ever notice many of the best competitors in the world in any competition are usually also the most ‘lucky’?

Hard to come up with someone to compare him to. There have been much larger centers who had vision like him (Thornton), but couldn’t skate like him. There have been players similar in size to him with skills like him, but who couldn’t protect the puck and fight through checks as well (Gretzky, Oates, Yzerman). Crosby's truly the definition of an all around, multi-faceted, player. He's not necessarily the best in any single area, save his understanding of the game arguably. He's not as fast as McDavid, he doesn't have the shot that made Ove who he was, he's not the toughest guy, etc. but he's just an all arounder that tops tier in every single regard. And while he's not as young, his leadership and experience and have made him into a better player in a number of areas as well. There's a reason he was "the next great one", and you'd be hard pressed to find an argument against him having met that role

There's no need to downplay McDavid to pump Crosby up. They're both going to go down as top 5-10 players of all time. McDavid just put up 105 points in 56 games 2 years ago, and is now pacing for 160 this year. While scoring might be up compared to Crosby's prime, what McDavid is doing right now is borderline Gretzky levels of offensive dominance. Crosby has become well rounded as he's aged but he's not a selke level defensive center, and even if he was that still doesn't compare to what McDavid is doing right now. I would love to see how a 25 year old Crosby would have compared to McDavid if he was playing in this higher scoring era but unfortunately that's not the case and as great as he still is at 35 Sid is past his prime and McDavid is clearly the best player in the NHL by quite a large margin.

Not saying he didn’t have it before, but I’ve never seen dominance in playoffs the way McDavid did last year. Could have legitimately won the conn smyth. Dominance like McDavids last playoff run was done by Crosby in 2018 when they got bounced by Washington in the second round, his point per game average was only .25 lower but Crosby was one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL that year. Malkin also had a more impressive run in 09 in my opinion, Malkin was playing in lower scoring time against MUCH tougher competition and put up 14 goals and 36 points in 24 games while winning the cup and the Smythe. McDavid is the best in the world currently without a doubt and has been undeniably since 2020 guys an absolute animal and last playoffs was really something special to watch.

In my lifetime, the 2 most skilled players I've ever seen were Lemieux and McDavid. But Sid is just a different creature. He's not going to necessarily wow you with his speed or dangles or shot-power (though he's certainly not lacking in those), but his IQ and will-to-win come second to none IMO. Necessity is mother of invention, and since Crosby wasn't born with Connor's speed, Mario's height, Ovi's shot or Kovalev's handles, he's had to adapt and find other ways to succeed. Plus, he's always working on his weaknesses. After his concussion issues, his game changed (likely for the better). He realized that he didn't need to just score or assist to impact a game. Winning small battles in certain areas or at certain moments can suddenly change momentum: setting a screen, blocking a shot, winning a face-off, etc...the things that stars usually praise their teams' role-players for doing, but Sid does a bit of everything.

Before that game when he got hit he was destroying every team he faced up to that point he was unstoppable!

87 with out a doubt. McDavid has speed and hands. 87 has hands, edge work, passing, iq, leadership and worth ethic. McDavid will never battle like 87 does, he has spent his whole like just skating and dangling people

McDavid is a great individual player, but Sid is the greatest team player of this generation. If I could choose one to have on my team, I'd take Sid in a heartbeat. McDavid can score, Sid can make you score.

Grew up about 3 blocks from Crosby, so I'm biased, but Crosby makes everyone around him better in a very noticeable way, the work and the techniques are something he spreads to others, while McDavid isn't at least yet the same type of leader, and his play style isn't something that can be shared or mimicked as much. So I think still yeah clutch situations and franchise player, Crosby.

There were a few years where Toews and Kopitar were (I mean... Kinda... Use your imagination here) creeping up on Crosby. 10 years later and Kopitar is starting to show his age and we lost Toews years ago .. Crosby is still unbelievable.

After crunching the numbers and factoring in everything, I project he finishes his career at roughly 42 and 1800 to 1850 points. Doubt he'll pass Lemieux in goals, but definitely in assists and overall points

At home maybe McD, away SidThenotsoKid. If you can control matchups, McD can burn a mismatch easier. While Sid is more versatile so handle the bad match ups better... I would just be happy to have either as an option

Being a Flyers fan I hate Sidney (yes at 35) Anyway I've got nothing but respect for his game. The man is a winner. So glad he recovered from those injury concerns earlier in his career. That said I can't wait until he retires. McDavid is so good it's still stunning that said Sid is a proven winner.

Sid is not only one of the best players ever he has been one for his entire career very few can say that sid is a highlight reel experts had him as number 5 in the top 100 the one through five are retired very impressive company very unselfish player makes his linemates very good Guentsel should be sending sid a nice Christmas card every year when sid decides to retire I'm sure that Mario has a position for him unfortunately hockey will not be the same without him thanks for the thrills I'm sure there will be more but when you decide to retire you know when it's time and good luck and thanks for the memories

Maybe I'm just biased because I grew up watching Sid, and live near Crosby's hometown, but for me he's the greatest of all time. The fact that he stays in touch with his roots and engages with the community whenever he can definitely helps. I'm no hockey expert, but Sid is just too good a guy for me to not love him.

Im in a similar situation. About a half hour from Cole Harbour, played many minor games at his home rink. I don't play favourites based on whether players are from my area, and I'm a not even a Penguins fan, but he is undeniably on of the GOATs. I watch my favourite players in awe, then I see some of Sydney's plays and don't even know how to react.

@@kg_canuck I don't even play hockey. I did when I was really young, but grew up poor so the only equipment we could afford was cheap and incredibly painful. In fact I've only really gotten back into the sport within the past week or two. Sid is an exception for me I think. I don't have the same level of admiration for MacKinnon despite him being from Cole Harbour. Like I said, I grew up watching Sid through the years. He's practically the reason I even like hockey in the first place. Being from the same area, and knowing family of his (who have told me what he's like) just makes me look up to him in a way that I don't towards any other player.
