There is talk that they won't be moving away from in person drafts since the teams that wanted to do that are having second thoughts. There was an NBA exec at the NHL draft and a hab reporter asked him what he thought and he said the NHL draft is way more exciting then what the NBA does and he wouldn't move away from this format. The guy who is reporting this is Arpon Basu, and Athletic writer for the Habs and he has been talking with the GM's. Another thing he pointed out that the NHL doesn't have an event where they all meet to discuss ideas and this is actually a good venue to do it. The real reason as to why so many GM's don't want in person drafts previously is that it was so close to Free Agency. Free Agency starts on July 1st. So they feel that they have so little time to prepare for it and don't want to travel if they can avoid it. Now though some are reconsidering.

If I had to honestly guess, it's a business tactic to skip a few years, save some cash, and generate bonus enthusiasm about the draft, simply because we haven't had one in a while. They will probably bring it back in 3 or 4 years. I doubt enough people are watching it to make it profitable, so they are doing this to try to get that number above $0 for the NHL and the owners. They probably don't see it as super critical to the game, and having a big TV event in a random venue is expensive every year. There are a lot of reasons for them to stop doing it, financially. I am a huge hockey fan, an SJ Sharks fan, and even I did not tune in live. They basically got $0 from me, a mega-fan that watches almost every team. I saw a couple ads in the borders of the screen as I fastforwarded through the draft and send my brother and dad a clip of the first OA with my phone. Too much travel to? That’s the best part of the job. Everybody just wants to work from home.

The NFL turned the draft into a huge spectacle. It's great for cities that won't host a super bowl to have a big event for their fans.

totally agree. Playoffs should end by first week of June. change the format from 4 out 7 to 3 out of 5

To be fair, the Oilers came close. Expect them to plau like crap next year; as is tradition.

NHL has to remain the NHL and honor its tradition and those who came before. We are not the NFL with the whole look at me antics.

I was lamenting the love draft this year as it was happening. So what to expect next year? The prospects are all invited to an arena and the GM’s just call in via zoom? Garbage.

That’s not the final jersey as it’s just a sweatshirt. The actual jerseys have stripes and nicer things…. Don’t kid yourself it’s still going to be boring as heck at least for this year until the permanent name and brands arrive for Year 2.

@@hughjass69702for Year 1, no it still says Utah 🤣 Year 1 they’re just the Utah Hockey Club, even though there’s an actual public fan vote as far as I know to crown the permanent name. I voted for the Utah Yeti, but I know the Mammoth and Blizzard are a few other finalists.

did not know the draft will "not be in person"....SAD....as a longtime hockey fan(I'm 66) ...way back when I was in my 20"s....I traveled by train to Montreal(from NE USA) and visited....did not plan this but stumbled into the NHL draft being held at the "OLD" Montreal forum....WOW...still recall it to this day......also got to thank AL ARBOUR who I met and introduced myself as a ISLANDER fan of fans....thanks for the video
