Looks like the Mexican government is going to improve the rail "corridor" and expand the ports,, the pass between the sierra is about as low as Panama or lower than Nicaragua,, I think,, and the rainfall on the Atlantic side is more than sufficient for feeder canals but the locks on the Pacific side would need major feedwater but hey,, the Atlantic sides a rainforest so wtf... It's long though,, if I had 10 or 15 billion laying around I'd do it,, just to piss Wall Street off,, because it'd make enough revenue for continued operation free and clear and be a boom for the Mexican economy but that's exactly why Wall Street WON'T do it...

The Panama Canal wasn't Teddy Roosevelt's idea. The French started the canal under de Lesseps (who built the Suez Canal first) starting in 1881. The French also had a railroad across Panama for transshipping cargo and passengers before the canal was completed. Teddy just swooped in after the French attempt went bankrupt.

The railroad was American. Americans had been there since the early 1800s offering a shortcut for human passenger traffic to the port on the Pacific coast.

I lived in Nicaragua for 4 years when I married a girl there. Here are my takes of what I saw. he San Juan River is actually owned by Nicaragua the shore of Costa Rica of the river is the actual border, according to historical and legal documents. Has Costa Rica tried to amend those agreements? Yes they have. But nothing come for it other than a border skirmish that lasted a sew days. China has done some other work out there tho. They build either a dam or power plant (can't remember which one) in the north of the country for Rural Electrification, They also did dig some wells and canals. Ortega's idea was to build up the cities on the shores of the Canal.
@RebeccaOre Жыл бұрын
One person I knew (he's died since) in 2018 before the mess was working for the Chinese on rescue archeology, and one other man had been working on the ecological survey. The businessman was probably a cover. The present trade agreement, and Nicaragua now works with the Chinese, not the Taiwanese. The US is threatening to occupy Nicaragua when Ortega leaves the presidency (most of us think he's going to go out lying flat and as long as a person with Lupus can live). The route was evolved through the findings of the ecological study group (moved to save a Pacific Coast mangrove grove). Ortega has outmaneuvered any number of plots against him, both inside the FSLN and outside directed by the US. The route wouldn't have gone near Concepcion. Everyone knows if Ortega pulls this off, he'll be one of the great Nicaraguan presidents, so a lot of people really don't like that. The Lake isn't the main source of drinking water for Nicaragua because it's very silty (per the ecologist who told me about it). Almost anything you've read about Nicaraguan recently is close to totally non-factual. A friend said that Ortega does everything he promises. The canal is about the only thing that he's failed (so far) to pull off. The British owe China a lot for pushing opium on China despite local laws against the drug.

Pretty well ALL the objections (local corruption, geological, climatic, need for imprting large amounts of skilled labour plus explosives etc) were the same for the major widening of the Panama Canal. The reason the difficulties with one were blazoned forth in the US-led media while those of the other were ignored had everything to do with geopolitics, not engineering or economics.
@bigmedge10 ай бұрын
It had everything to do with economics & drinking water . It would’ve decimated Nicaragua’s main source (by far) of drinking water, & the Chinese guy who said he’d finance it turned out to be a scammer b/c his company has no idea or experience in how to build such large infrastructure

@RebeccaOre Жыл бұрын
The Americans have earned a 40 year time out from trying to fix other people's countries. Nicaragua tends to be politically polarized. Anything that makes that less would be useful. Americans, as at least some refugees are finding out, tend to be quite bigoted toward less than white people. Chinese have had that experience with various Europeans and Americans and the Japanese through 1949 or so. SE Asian countries do not like China, but they never colonized Africa and the Americas and the issue with seizing Tibet was not quite as clear cut as the US seizing half of Mexico. Cuba could also be guaranteed cheaper Chinese products as sea transport for them would avoid the Panama Canal.
@jakubznojemsky4936 Жыл бұрын
@@RebeccaOre Sorry pal but I disagree about most of it. It would be nice for America to take break but nobody can rest until problems are solved and there are always problems. Nicaragua is polarised but also hole in the ground so if it would seal and breach any deal Just Cause 2.0 it is. Japanese did Nankin, screwed up war declaration and treated both subjected countries and war prisoners like sh!t so what a surprise they got same treatment afterwards. In other cases every state usualy watches over their own first then imigrants but race inequality is diminishing. It's rather poor vs rich which often happen to be some old white moneybag but white commoners are stuck in same rubbish like everyone else. But I agree that US have some unadressed bigots. When it comes to colonising it's best to remember that everyone was kinda bad with most of records remaining about Europeans who exploited local resources and workforce but the local "workforce" sometimes happened to be cannibals or great fans of human sacrifices and other nauseating habits. Also some tribes were selling rival tribe prisoners. Loss of less violent cultures is regretable though. Still all the exploitation covered costs to build local hospitals, schools, infrastructure and development in general. So yeah everyone involved was large S-hole yet everyone could benefit from that. But it's old news and eveyryone is given pretty much same rights now so who gives...?

There are so many errors in this video that it’s hard to know where to start. Nicaragua does not share the Río San Juan with Costa Rica. Costa Rica has commercial access to part of the river but the River is Nicaraguan territory. Nicaragua and Panama have similar climate and geographically are in hurricane prompt areas so the argument that climate is a big obstacle to the Nicaraguan canal would be true for the Panamá canal yet the Panama Canal was built and it still is very successful. Lake Nicaragua is not the country’s main source of drinking water. For instance in the capital of Managua the Asososca lagoon has been the main source of drinking water and from what I understand now the major source of drinking water in the country is groundwater. There are many other instances throughout where information is given as facts but they’re not. You can’t form an educated conclusion or opinion if part of the information given is false or at best half false.
@RebeccaOre Жыл бұрын
Simon's just echoing the talking points of the opponents to the canal, and their opposition was mainly not wanting Ortega to pull something like this off in reality. Several old Contras and their US handlers will spontaneously combust if Ortega does pull this off. And it will give Nicaragua two deep water seaports in addition to the canal. B Panama has nastier general weather than Nicaragua, but is south of the hurricane belt. C. getting potable water out of a lake with currents that roil sediment (hard to observe fish there) is non-trival. As far as problems with the Rio San Juan, Nicaragua owns the bed to the opposite bank, and Lake Gatun has fish in it, and ships, too.

With reshoring beginning & the Panama Canal already expanded, it will probably never happen. Venezuela and Guyana (big new oil discoveries there) would like to be able to ship oil and gas on a shorter route to Asia, if a huge canal was built. If they had 2 canals, a price war might soon follow. That can't happen with the Suez Canal. The global warming fight might hit ocean shipping too, as producing as close to demand as possible is adopted as a way to reduce transportation pollution. Before an American invented the container, things were made as close as possible to where they would be consumed. Furniture and TVs weren't shipped from China to New York. It was too expensive.

Every single reason not to build this canal could have been levelled at the Panama cancel. We’re lucky that our forebears built the infrastructure we rely on today as we can’t seem to get out of our own way these days.

It depends on who stands to benefit from the project really. If it's an ''undesirable'' then we will point out everything that could go wrong with the project but swap beneficiaries then as if by magic it will be built

Panama canal being to small. Titanic was designed as an Panamax ship. Iowa battleships was too but this was an compromise who reduced their resistance against torpedoes. The unbuild Montana battleships and cold war carriers would also be to large.
