🚲 The nice way to cycle from Wanstead to Woodford

You can cycle from Wanstead in north east London to nearby Woodford, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 5.6km long (3.5 miles) and makes use of protected cycle lanes along Woodford New Road, a cycle path along Whipps Cross Road, as well as quiet streets near George Green.

The weeds that cover half the width of the cycle path just before the Green Man roundabout (at about 2.30) have been cleared this week. Maybe someone at Redbridge council watches your videos.

Was probably me shouting at them! :) I raised a ticket to Tfl streetcare.tfl.gov.uk/report/5996478 on 20th May and one to Redbridge on 20th too. TfL came back pretty quick saying work was scheduled and Redbridge came back no action was needed. Initially I thought it was Redbridge being crap, but it was clear on 26th May when I was on it. They cleared the narrow passage at 2:10 and 2:30 onwards. So kudos to TfL for actioning it so quickly! If I'm being picky they could have done with pressure washing it afterwards, but baby steps... I'm going to raise a ticket to have some path markings (bicycles and pedestrians) through the Greenman Roundabout as they've mostly faded and lots of people walking everywhere.

It's a great route, but you don't need to cross from the two-way cycleway in order to access the subways. You can keep going across the junction with Forest Rd and there is an entrance on the shared pavement.

Yes was going to add as well. Quite why you would try and cross the new road anywhere but at the lights is totally bananas

@@Londoncycleroutes in fairness, I know the area so was surprised that you did this. But on reflection, what it shows is how poorly designed and signposted a lot of the cycling infrastructure is in london.

Great video as always jon. In case you didnt know going northbound you can carry on from where you crossed woodford new road and cross forest road instead over a signalised crossing, and do the roundabout underpasses with flow. Bit safer especially when Woodford new road is busy

Yes I think you’re right that’s a better way of doing it - I actually ended up doing that on the way back. If they don’t have the money to rebuild the junction it would be good to have some better wayfinding there to show you can cycle on the pavement

The council's plans for Forest Road should see the junction with Woodford New Road turned into another one of their totally protected junctions and a cycle lane right up to waterworks roundabout- hoping they start building it soon!

Well done with the route, great stuff. I would be careful of over-praising some of these side road treatments such as at 6:20. Turning drivers will likely assume they have priority over anyone walking/cycling across when turning from the main road into here, especially with the double yellow lines interrupting the pavement and cycle track. Being a 2-way path also means people cycling from the opposite direction could be missed. 5:49 is a much better example

It's a private road, not owned by the council, so that may limit the level of treatment WF are able to install there. Fortunately it is a relatively small cul-de-sac and has a 3mph speed limit.

Very informative, but doesn't convey just how confusing Waterworks Corner is if you're not familiar with it. Don't you just hate streets where all the former front gardens have been used for car parking?

Yeah the waterworks corner is confusing! I should have made a bigger thing of that. You can see me pausing to check which way to go haha (although I did manage to do it without any wrong turns the first time)
