Dude I know that feeling so well of “I have the perfect thing, why would I ever need another thing?” and then you start seeing other things that look REALLY cool 😅 One thing I took to heart and I taught to a lot of students was: the best instrument is the one that gets you EXCITED to play it. Even a technically perfect machine that you loathe playing isn’t at all useful, and a real piece of junk can be worth a fortune if it’s exactly what you’re looking for! And I believe that 100%. All of this is to say, it’s FUN to buy gear and new stuff makes you excited to play and that’s the most valuable part!!! Also you definitely have a “type” lol! The seafoam green to light blue color spectrum is so nice, definitely making me envious!
@TOMBUCK22 ай бұрын
Haha oh man, it never ends! 😅 You're 100% right about the excitement part. That really matters! Even on my main channel I talk about mics a lot and people sometimes give me a hard time for talking about a microphones design/appearance, but it's exactly like you said: if something makes you excited then you'll want to use it more!

It’s officially listed as “Sea Foam Green” by Fender, but that finish has always fluctuated slightly with different interpretations. I do love this particular shade of Sea Foam, though. I love the beefiness of the p bass but also love the slimness of the Jaguar. I don't think I prefer one or the other, they're each just a joy to use. Currently attempting to learn the bassline for Feeling This, which is significantly more complicated than I expected, but a lot of fun.
@justind63812 ай бұрын
Great vid! Don’t forget the pickups aren’t technically “reversed” the bridge pickup is actually brought up closer to the neck. So they appear inverted, but actually the EA pickup is in the exact same location and the DG pickup is brought above it and closer to the neck. This also contributes significantly to the change in sound! You can tell if you look at a player jag and compare the pickup locations. This Hoppus bass is fantastic and I’ve been playing mine nonstop, the tone is excellent!
@bassplyr13Ай бұрын
FALSE. The EA pickup is slightly, and I mean slightly, closer to the bridge when compared to the traditional position.

If it’s in the car, it freezes in MN. If you open it up before a half hour the gloss finish on the bass cracks all over the black/red/blue/colored paint. It’s fine, my friends is perfect after he did that 40 years ago. We always set the guitars in cases for 30 minutes during the winter (I moved to FL just now, don’t have to deal with that). Also being on the truck can f’ with the temperature.

I LOVE the neck! I believer it is just a standard Jazz neck, so the edges feel pretty much the same/sharp as my P bass even though the neck is slimmer.
@WalkinHorror2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the demo! It sounds pretty much like the Take Off Your Pants-era bass tone to me, pretty wild you got the tone straight from the box! A little note on your left hand technique: I see a lot of wasteful movement in your fingers, to the point that they sometimes point forward. This looks unhealthy and you might hurt yourself if you play like this for extended sessions! My advise would be to slllooooww things down and take a moment to mindfully fret some notes, making sure your hand moves as efficiently as possible. Beside health benefits, this will improve your tone (particularly on those ska tunes) and allow you to play faster :)
@TOMBUCK22 ай бұрын

It’s kinda crazy but I’ve been eyeing both of these basses for a while now. The pbass is on sale for around $1485 w/hardshell case I know they’re completely different but if you could only choose one, which would you keep ? I’m kinda thinking although I love the look and the sound of Mark’s bass the pbass might be more versatile. What do you think? Awesome review, thank you!
@TOMBUCK22 ай бұрын
Seriously the P Bass is that price?! That makes it a very tough decision! The P Bass is definitely more versatile (no surprise there!). But the Jaguar is REALLY fun to play and makes it super easy to get that pop-punk sound (again, probably no surprise there). The quality is where I'm torn. The Jaguar's quality is easily equal to the American P Bass, with better electronics. At full retail price, I think I would actually lean towards the Jaguar, but if the P Bass really is that much cheaper now, then it might be the way to go because of its added versatility. But if you're like me then half of it is just an emotional decision 😬 Logic goes out the window when you're just thinking about which one you'd be more excited to pick up and play every day (I couldn't choose and ended up with both...)

A big reason Sweetwater says that about letting it acclimate for 24 hours is particularly important in the winter where the guitar can be subjected to very low temperatures say, in indiana, then warmer temperatures in SoCal and the big danger is finish checking.

According to a reliable luthier, weather acclimation only matters when you're going from extremes. So if it's -30° outside or 120° then ok, let it sit, if it came from a 70° location to a 75° location then just open the damn thing 😂

I do live in the desert, so in summertime if could go from like a 60 to 120 degree climate, but I don't think it was too crazy this year. Plus it sits at the FedEx center for a day or so before getting delivered, so I don't know if that helps things acclimate? It's definitely and interesting thing to think about!
