We have my great grandfather's kitchen table made from Ash. It's at the summer cottage. I love ash. I've got an ash that the ash borers pretty much killed. The tree company ( I know the owner) is going to take down the tree. He laughed when I told him to leave the trunk for milling. He said no one wants ash. I told him I do, it's a beautiful wood. It's a little bigger than what you were milling.

But remember for furniture use kiln dry only. If you use air dry and put it in a room with a wood stove it will shrink even if it was drying 20 years stacked inside in a hot attic. My father and grandfather owned a cabinet shop and wood milling from 1926 to 1989
@jameswilson3224 жыл бұрын
Dry is dry weather its kiln dry or air dry , auctuly air drying is better because the moisture leaves slower with less chance of warping and twisting
@johnnorris12274 жыл бұрын
Not sure where you heard you cant make furniture from air dried lumber because that's just plain wrong. I air dry all my lumber and while it takes time usually about a year or more outside in covered stacks before I move it into my shop to bring it down to final moisture %. I have no problem getting my lumber down to 6% MC the way I do it which is perfectly good for building furniture. 6% MC is about as low as they can go when kiln drying. I've also heard air drying is better in most cases and especially for certain types of wood as it preserves the color better than kiln drying.

You could use a bigger chainsaw with a longer arm so you can go all the way thru with one cut. If you place some small limbs under the log, 1 on each side of where you cut with the chain saw and a slightly smaller one on the ends, it will keep your log from binding up your chainsaw and lift the log enough you won’t get your blade in the dirt at the bottom. Awesome video. So many great projects that can be made. I just saw these saws for the first time yesterday and would love to have one but being a truck driver I would never have time to use it. Lol

OK, first off, what a beautiful piece of wood! I hope you can make something equally as beautiful. Thanks for the video, but a couple of things... you probably should be using some PPE (personal protection equipment) like head phones and safety glasses. You'll want to be able to hear when you get older (take it from me :) also, um, you should use the car horn more often... ;) I guess your grandpa(?) didn't know how well your camera picks up his words. Other than that, you do a lot of unnecessary raising and lowering of the saw. If you complete the cut, remove the freshly cut board, return the saw to the start and lower it to the new cutting depth it'll save you a lot of work. Just sayin' from personal experience. Take care.
@josaljo14 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, we found that the saw blade picks up a considerable amount of dust if you don't raise it after a cut, and that dust causes the guide roller to stretch the blade when you start the saw. We find it easier to raise and lower without having to clean the blade.
