Thank you Nick. I very much appreciate the shout out.

Given how soft the steel is on the Z-Hunter I genuinely wouldn't have been surprised by a 4.5 minute sharpening vid that covered the whole process 😀

When I saw this was a relatively short video I thought it would be Nick putting a knife in a box addressed to Rob Bixby! The AposleP's edges are awesome indeed but I've managed, with much practice, to get edges to my satisfaction on my KME (your mileage might vary).
@sputumtube7 жыл бұрын
The much vaunted 'mirror edge' is indeed cosmetically beautiful and recommended for high-end collectibles/safe queens and so on. However, for a daily use knife it seems kind of pointless to me. Five minutes a day with a Sharpmaker and a (green compound) strop brings most steels back to the 'hair-shaving' benchmark we all deem necessary.
@DeSousausmc7 жыл бұрын
paul greenwood much agreed. Some knives I'll put a mirror on but for most my cooking knives I don't go past coarse or fine as that toothy edge is far superior for things like food prep

I have had a KME for a couple of months and have had descent results. Not perfect but descent. I love the process and am determined to get better. Thanks for the honesty. Sharpening is not easy.

This is in interesting conundrum. Sharpen them yourself, to save time + money (uh, long term, and especially if you have multiple knives you use often ...) But if you're ultimately not great at it, that begs the question of why not send them out for sharpening? And more to the point, who would that BE?
@bengalvin717 жыл бұрын
We don't need a Jedi sharpening video, just a basic tutorial on using on using the Spyderco sharpmaker. Watch and learn with the Gimpy Chimpy will be just fine for me.

I got good at freehand sharpening and it took years but now it's my preferred method. I'm so happy with the edge that I can freehand that I worry about trying a sharpening system.

I started sharpening with the spyderco sharpmaker about 6 months ago. I got good results from it, but It would sometimes take a really long time to get some knives sharp. recently I got the work sharp ken onion and it is fantastic! I can get a dull knife to shave in about 10-15 minutes. Takes a little longer if there are chips on the cutting edge.

great video Nick I've been hand sharpening used arkansaw stones, and wet stones, then switched to diamond stones. helps to have a guided system for sure.
@Good.shepherd4206 жыл бұрын
Are you still using the strips and glass for the kme or have you moved to sandpaper?
@petehorn67057 жыл бұрын
Guided systems make life easy! I use the $50 lansky system and it gets hair popping sharp edges, not quite hair whittling but good enough for life
@ogenmatic7 жыл бұрын
Pete Horn I found the rods too flimsy to get the stones at a consistent angle (from stone to stone especially). I got the KME & it's worth the cost difference to me at least.
@LTT.Official7 жыл бұрын
Yep, I have the shitty $22 stone lanky system and it works really well, shaves hair not smoothly but for everyday life, can't ask for more, price to performance wise.

I recently got a bemchmade 940-2 as a graduation present. however I cannot get it to easily Close without considerable blade play. would you recommend to do a full clean and polish the washers?
@NickShabazz7 жыл бұрын
Send it to Benchmade. They'll make it right.

Nick Shabazz thanks for the reply. I just didn't want to wait 4 weeks to fix it if I could do it myself
@rodrigoteresa79447 жыл бұрын
Kyle Keenliside I think Benchmade will take care off you if you have a QC problem like that. If modification doesn't void the warranty you could try something like that first though.

Thanks for this video. Sharpening is important for everybody to know about and as somebody who isn't very deep into the knife game at all (and doesn't plan to be) but has a few that I need to keep sharp, I can tell you searching youtube and google yields a lot of less than helpful results, especially for beginners. BTW do you have any thoughts on the work sharp field sharpener? It looks like a beginner-friendly sharpening system at a great price that lacks nothing necessary for maintaining an edge or resharpening a blade that's gone dull.

I've owned many systems over the years and in my experience as far as the popular systems go, I like the edgepro the best and hate the sharpmaker. I've since dumped all those systems and learned freehand sharpening . There is simply no system that can recreate the beauty and sharpness of a hand sharpened edge. That being said Mike Emler is my favorite sharpener on youtube

If you want to easily step up the quality of your edges, buy a Wicked Edge. Vastly superior to the KME, Lansky, Apex Pro, etc in my experience. I had trouble with all of those systems, but I can put a hair whittling mirror edge on any knife with the Wicked Edge.

You need alot of patience. I learned most of my sharpening skills on KZbin. I am not as good as any of the good guys but I can get a polished edge that is a heluvalot better than factory. It just takes forever. The better the metal the longer it takes. Some of the steels make you want to pull your hair out. By the way I have the KME sharpener and its great and Ron the owner will always talk to you and explain anything you need to know. He will never hawk anything in fact if he doesn't think you need it he will tell you not to buy it. I think the only sharpener better than the KME is the Tormek.
