As a huge boxing fan and collector of boxing careers on dvd , i remember watching john l gardner fight on t.v on numerous occasions. John always fought with his heart on his sleeve and gave it everything he had. I particularly remember his fights against sykes that was an entertaining fight . John was then taken to America to fight Michael dynamite dokes. I remember thinking at the time that the dokes match up was not particularly a good idea as dokes was apparently the successor to larry holmes at the time. John suffered a brutal knockout but gave his all again. The last time i seen john in a boxing ring was against liverpool's noel quarless Who at times could be an enormous puncher with hand speed. This fight was shown live on ITV. John was stopped in the second round after taking some huge right hands by quarless. Im lucky to have a collection of johns fights on dvd that i do enjoy watching now and again. I was surprised to see this as i was totally unaware that this incident had taken place. However johns health is now.....i wish him the very best of luck and take my hat off to him for the bravery he always displayed in the ring.

Wow!! Amazed to see this. I was a very good friend of John and Michelle for many years. This attack happened before I knew them. I've seen John and Michelle's scars and heard the full tale in great detail. Horrific attack. They moved home a lot and I've since lost touch. John was an absolute diamond of a fella and we had some real great laughs, and I wish I could get back in touch. I've tried through his book publisher, but I've been told he's not in good health now sadly. If you read this John...get in touch please fella. 👍(Mike, CD-Quays, in case you don't recognise me with the beard!!)

This was a Good video. I am from NYC and never knew Great Britain had these kinds of crazy, depraved Killers in their midst. I thought sick, twisted Killers like this primarily existed in United States. I am confused on the Laws in England, and don't understand how this Foster could get such lenient sentences for all the horrific crimes He committed. Maybe the Enquirer 2.0 reporter or someone commenting could fill me in on how he got such lenient terms in Prison? I guess the old saying "Only in America" ain't as true as I thought it was. Again, a really great, but horrifying video. Stay Safe My British Friends

Thankyou our friends from across the pond. The first crime r#pe : At the time maximum sentence 10 years for that type of offence. He changed his plea to guilty last second and the judge unwisely gave him credit for this and hence the 6 year sentence very lenient but I think different now. 2. The second attack the judge believed he made up his first confession and cleared him. 3. The Knife attack for some bizarre reason they dropped from attempted murdee to lessee wounding charge. I feel there was more going on behind the scenes 🙏

Our criminal justice system is just different mate; a ‘life sentence’ here usually has a minimum term attached of between fifteen and thirty years, occasionally as high as forty. In very rare cases people get a ‘whole life tariff’ which is the British equivalent of life without parole - as far as I am aware there have only been one hundred or so of those sentences administered. I think the idea is that only the people who have committed the most reprehensible acts are considered ‘beyond rehabilitation.’ Once you are let out of prison after your probation has been agreed (usually at expiry of your minimum term if there are no aggravating factors), you remain on license so have to follow a relatively strict set of rules or you can be recalled at any point (‘life license’). Life sentences are usually given for murder, but can be given for other crimes - repeat sex offenders for instance, and other behaviour that is considered pathological in function and therefore unlikely to change in the short term. Unfortunately our penalties regarding grievous bodily harm (your aggravated assault), r*pe, crimes against children, etc, are not harsh enough and there is often public outcry about it, and as an American who would be used to seeing people who commit rape with violence get decades in prison I’m sure the British system seems ludicrous, implausible almost. The only positives we can say for our legal system are our gun laws, and the fact we don’t have the death penalty so we are able to correct the injustices we get wrong. Otherwise, we could take some sentencing tips from the States.

If there's internal affairs involved and he was an informer then it's possible why he got leniency. Or he wasn't an asset, and the police etc considered it crime on crime.Or Foster had powerful mitigation only shared with the higher ranking judiciary. Its always nuanced....

Thanks for this fascinating article, there must’ve been so many hard men getting around Britain. My father always warned me about these types of people in the pubs. Men who had a history of being ex boxers when they were younger. Don’t let the looks of them now in thinking that they’re old drunks, because even in their current circumstances they’re still very dangerous if push comes to shove. I always thought about that when seeing young would be’s making that mistake.

I've never heard of this bloke and I never thought of Gateshead as a rough area. I used to live in Cowgate and we used to put that we lived in Blakelaw on job application forms because of Cowgate's reputation. It was the same when I was trying to chat up girls in nightclubs as soon as they found out that I lived in Cowgate they didn't want to know. The funny thing is that when my parents first moved to Cowgate from Elswick in the early 70s it was a sought after area and it was difficult to get a house there.

For info Gardner was the licencee of the Queens in wallsend prior to taking the Three Tuns. Word is after he took the Queens he was told in "no uncertain terms" by Viv Graham to get out of wallsend ASAP and This is why he moved over the water to Gateshead to the Tuns. I remember seeing him in wallsend in the pub but at that time Viv was king and there wasn't room for the two of them as wallsend was a favourite spot for viv. His partners brother Bilko ran a pub there and his other brother Peter Connelly were always in the pubs.

I heard Viv delivering his pitch to him not long after he was in there and he didn't seem overly impressed with it. That would've been in 92 or 93. Viv was a prick. The queens didn't need protection until he started showing his face about the high street. His brother in law Peter turned in to a grade A bellend as well. Brave when Viv around. Me mate, DJ Dirty Bastard also known as more posher events...DJ Stunning Steve Stallion The Total Package was the DJ at Wall Street that was just below Liberty's. It was like the warm up place before Liberty's opened later that night. Anyway, we had just left the place before the fatal stabbing. We were still questioned by CID on whether we'd seen anything. There's a part of Bensham called Murder Mile...I believe there was 4 separate murders within a square mile of each other years ago, all were in a certain time frame. I could be wrong and they are not in any particular order but I think one stabbing, one shot, a landlord decapitated and bundled back into his car boot and a son killed his lesbian mother hiding her in a coal bunker in the backyard.
