They are many underrated SA artists who are much better than Lucky Dube. Check out Colbert Mukwevho (formally known as Harley and the Rastafarians) and his Son P. Postman with their family backed band. This guys are the best in roots reggae and compete with any Jamaican, also did some work with some Jamaican artists.

Lucky Dube was known by Jamaicans well before his performance in Jamaica. How could he be unknown when Barry G was the number one Jamaican disc jockey at the time? He was respected as a great artiste. At first, many felt that he imitated Peter Tosh and were put off by it. Other than that, I remember Jamaicans having love for Lucky ESPECIALLY AS HE WAS AN AFRICAN. Jamaicans still don't think that other countries outside of Jamaica AND AFRICA, represent the Reggae sound as authentic as it should be. Africans represent the music without a flaw, which is even better than most of our Caribbean families.

Joseph Hill was a very great singer and musician who paid his dues, especially when he was left alone in the group "Culture." Reggae, which originated in Jamaica, is now bigger than Jamaicans. Jamaicans today label non-Jamaicans as reggae culture vultures, but we in Africa, especially Nigerians, are waiting to see the next big thing in black music since Afrobeats is dominating and even threatening reggae music today. Africans bought albums and records, promoted reggae music, and took it to the world stage. Today, Jamaicans are claiming to be the sole owners. good, but watch out for Afrobeats. African musicians are on the rise and dominating world music at the Grammys. Today, every music business is on social media, and with fewer likes and followers, one is not rated. Now is the time for Jamaicans to collaborate with their African brothers for growth. Burna Boy had a highly successful show in Jamaica, and they sang the track of his song by track. According to Kabaka Pyramid, in an interview with OnStage Winsford at the Jam Rock Cruise, he said Jamaica's population, which is not up to three million, should embrace its African brothers like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Kizz Daniel, and others.

Friendly competition is a good thing. And reggae is 100% a jamaican thing, but I think jamaican artists, and rootsmen in particular, need to realise that if it weren't for european, american (north and south), african and japanese fans, roots reggae would have all but died. People like luky dube kept the flame alive. Maybe without him, culture would not have the opportunity to play in the big event from 2000, with burning spear and the wailers, of which he recorded one of the best live albuns I've ever heard

He was right, Lucky Dube was so great that the totality of Jamaican modern "reggae"(cough cough...dance hall) "artists" can't even call themselves musicians if compared to him. This is why over the years African reggae surpassed Jamaican reggae of an infinite ton of times. Reggae cane back to the Motherland after the Masters' passing. And Jamaican culture looks to be completely ruined.

I'm of Jamaican heritage, both parents born in Clarendon, Jamaica. I was born in the UK, but now live in the Netherlands. Years ago while in the Netherlands a friend told me someone called Lucky Dube was playing in town. For someone who literally grew up with Reggae music I had never heard of him. Anyway I went to the venue thinking Dube was not all that popular and was surprised to find the entire crowd singing along with him word for word! Regardless, outside a few tunes, Reggae played by Jamaicans is better because we feel it more. Reggae from Africa and elsewhere simply does not have that depth of feeling for me.

And that's what Mr.Joseph Hill failed to realize.Lucky Dube could have sang roots Reggae but instead he decided to take Reggae music to a next level.
