Yes, A .22 revolver for most of his shootings, though he also used a .25 semi-automatic in a few shootings as well only for it to jam when he tried to use it. He favored the revolver due to it's high penetration at close range and the fact that it didn't eject the bullet casings.

It is a common contributor for a serial killer or rapist to be a victim themselves at a younger age. Kids are not mentally prepared for that they exposed for and will sometimes grow up and inflict it to others because they was taught it was the right way of the world. It does not help if the kid in question was born a sociopath or some other mental disorder, which can push him further to the path of violence. There is such a thing as free will, but your background will shape you to what you become and how you interact around you. In this case: The person was beaten by his father, his uncle showed and retold horrible things he done in vietnam(the "good" figure who treated him like a son) and he witnessed a murder. He turned to drugs and started to get into occult stuff like satanism. So kinda easy to see what happend to him, to make him such a monster. I have no sympathy for the person, but I understand how he became the night stalker.

The only reason he didn't approach them or attempt anything violent on them was because there were 3 men who also worked in the same place she worked at following the same route as her. He was stalking, waiting for an opportuntiy she said, but once someone recognized him and yelled,"Mira! Es el Richard Ramirez!" he fled the scene in his car. I think it’s just a natural response, personally. Just like women who like pimps and drug lords, I think in a strange way it offers a sense of protection. I worked for LAPD during this time. People were terrified and frequently called in sightings; at any given time, Ramirez was reported in multiple locations in Los Angeles simultaneously. It was truly frightening and Rob had to leave out a lot of stuff. Ramirez was recognized on a bus, dragged out by citizens and beaten severely until police arrived. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

The motel that is depicted in the movie is the Bristol in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco. The motel movie over dramitizes the actual room. But in real life...the room he stayed in had a pentagram carved into the door and the investigators took the entire door in as evidence. He did stay at the Cecil on skid row too. A second murderer who was infatuated with Richard's crimes came to the Cecil from Australia and stayed in the same room as the night stalker while he killed prostitutes.
