I love how this theme goes from gentle to practically demonic at the end. One of the top ten music themes for television.

Opening themes were so much better in the past. Shows with real songs (Bosom Buddies, Buck Rogers, Cheers, etc) and tons of older series with unsung song lyrics (Rifleman, Hogan's Heroes, Leave it to Beaver, Bewitched, etc) My favorite has to be All in the Family. There's a second verse in the opening credits and Carroll O'Connor actually wrote the lyrics for the closing theme.(Remembering You) Carroll preformed the tune with the original piano player, video here on KZbin

Yes. That seem always scared the hell out of me. Especially when the fan stops the clock stops the lights go out and there's just a spotlight on his face. and then when he turns to his left and has that terrified look on his face.

Same here. As formulaic as it was for Universal of the time, a lot of their stuff had a huge impact and influence on me. Particularly when they promoted Morality, Values and American Standards. Not like now, they are the complete opposite. It's like there has been a Communist take over. Universal used to be a veritable beacon of virtuosity. Now they are bottom of the barrel and they suck.

Fantastic show, one of the few 'must watch' shows for me back in the 70's. Kolchak confronted vampires, werewolves, aliens, nightmare (id) monster's, zombies, headless bikies, Native American bear spirits, satan worshipping politicians, a sucubus (or sucubi), the list goes on. 👏👏

I would watch this series as a kid in the late 70s. This theme was fascinating, but it scared me. What scared me the most was the “clunk…clunk…clunk…clunk!!” part of the theme!

That starting whistle echo is perfect and the most memory inducing part. It has such an hauntingly atmospheric quality. Iconic opening scene and theme song. Loved this series as a little kid. As I loved all things scary.

In the beginning you see Kolchak typing, the letters that hit the ink ribbon are reversed, but you will see a "P" on each character as well that isn't reversed. This stands for Pica font size otherwise known as 10 pitch. The other common type is Elite 12 pitch, the are marked E.

I remember this like if it were yesterday those cold Friday Fall nights my dad would come in late from work and moms and I would be waiting for him to bring home some Chinese food home before the night stalker came on. And soon as he would come through the door The night stalker would be coming on And my moms Would go get the plates ready . Shrimp egg foo young Would be piping hot and we would sit there and watch the night stalker . The music really creeped me out as a child and you know what I hated They would always send me back downstairs to get some more Coke while the excitement be going on and downstairs would be totally dark I would fly down there like flash run back up the steps with 2 cups of Coke LOL LOL I miss those times and my dad rest in peace pops.

Fall of 1974 was very scary for me: I was about to enter JUNIOR HIGH school. BUT: The premiere of the Planet of the Apes TV show and Kolchak TV show - BOTH on the same night! And a FRIDAY , no school the next day. I could not wait !! By December Apes was cancelled - and it was - pretty boring . Kolchak lasted to the spring with 2 more shows NOT FILMED . The ratings were bad and Darren McGavin is known as "difficult". Forward Fast to 1978 / 1979 (Now I am in high school) Kolchak was added to the CBS Late Movie on Friday Nights. 11:30. Then their movie (And back in the day - the movie was Night of the Lepus OR Frogs !! Once it was Night Stalker then BEYOND THE DOOR !) the Night Stalker got a new generation of fans AND the ratings were good ! Then Kolchak went dormant once more and then turned up (in some VERY poor quality prints) on the Sci Fi Channel. So today I am sitting pretty with my DVD set ! Best EPS: Spanish Moss Monster , The Ripper, The Zombie , The Vampire . I even liked The Trevi Collection and The Reptile .

When background music conveyed the emotion of the situation to perfection, and the actors and narration were all that was needed scare the crap out of you. Maximise your imagination of terror and fear, today's CGI over animated slap in the face doesn't evoke any imaginative capacity at all.

The Hollywood thing for quite sometime now is to try to destroy strong American related legacies by contaminating and diluting them with a"modern version" usually themed with today's engineered marxist bullshit.. There is nothing like the ORIGINAL ANYTHING.
