If Cus would have lived another 10 years I believe Tysons life would have been a different . Losing Cus broke Mike . Not only did he lose his farther figure , Cus kept him busy and in the right circles. But Mike has changed his outlook on life and learned from his mistakes and has become the man Cus would have been proud of.

Don King is a virus Mike couldn't shake.

His biggest problems after Cus died were Don King and Robin Givens. Bad influences on him for sure. King is a cancer and Givens just a gold-digger. Cus would have kept him on the straight and narrow. Mike ditched his team and fell for the Don King hype. Too bad. He may have been undefeated had Cus lived.

The death of Cus was a huge loss for Mike, but I think his career went downhill when he fired Kevin Rooney. Rooney was appointed by Cus before he died to take over as Mike’s trainer and Rooney was very good because Cus taught Kevin everything. Holy christ, Tyson is a goddamn legend. I may not have been alive when Mike was at his best, but looking back at who he was leaves me in awe of the man. Looking at my own struggles, hellish as they may be and have been, I feel like he proves I still have so much farther to go in life. Iron Mike feels like, to me at least, a representation of a spirit that refuses to fold against any odds, when some of us can’t seem to win, he proves its possible, sending opponents and struggles alike down again and again. I would be lying if I said a lot if what motivates me to keep going nowadays didn’t stem from Tyson’s warrior spirit. So on that note.. thanks Mike, you’ve given me a lot of help, more than you’ll ever know, and I really doubt I’m alone in that.

Cus had Mike using a 300 pound punching bag that most other boxers refused to train on. It was used to train short heavyweights with limited reach but bring more crushing power in close proximity to their opponent. Marciano trained in the same scenario but had 3 more inches of reach than Mike had. Mike was eventually eased off the 300 pound bag as Cus thought Mike would develop microfractures in his hands. So on they went to training on the water bags. Simply amazing the tutelage by D’Amato in his final act.

OMG! They don't give this enough recognition. How do you hit Tyson that many times, with a uppercut at the end then Tyson finished him with one freaking shot 😳. DETERMINED AND FOCUSED!!! That's why I love this guy man.

What other boxer in history describes his strategy as "precarious", "impetuous"..? Such an analytical thinker.
@terryboland38162 жыл бұрын
I don't think Tyson described his strategy as 'precarious' did he? It would be an odd statement.
@UnderHisHand2 жыл бұрын
He most certainly did. Watch the video. There's also footage of him calling his style impetuous. I agree that these aren't typical usages of the words, but they aren't incorrect, either.
@terryboland38162 жыл бұрын
@@UnderHisHand At 5:02? It's not totally clear to me but I think he actually says 'but I wasn't carious about it' meaning, I think, that he didn't care about Gross's aggressive start. What do you think he says?

We were spoiled. We had Mike Tyson in the ring, Michael Jordan on the court, and we just thought that was how sport was. Little did we know it was a unique era.

Reggie’s gameplan and/or composure was off. He had to know after Tillis fight his best chance was to try to tie Tyson up and slow the fight down. It only took a split second to get knocked out in an exchange with Tyson.

One of the great keys to Michael Tyson success was not only the way his body was built with incredible strength and speed was not only the great training he received but the fact that he was teachable. He was humble and teachable. Teachable. Teachable. Teachable. And that is what the Bible says is wisdom.

Cus d'amato was a bright guy for sure. But I still believe that Tyson has a higher IQ and would have been brilliant if someone took care of him at school. His vocabulary and the manner in which he expresses himself is quite amazing for a kid from the streets.

4:38 Actually, wrong...Gross was not out for the count there, he got back up and fought for a few more seconds, and then was knocked down again. The ref didn't allow it to continue and Gross was pissed, he even shoved the ref for calling an end to the fight.

Notice how Gross threw haymakers from the side with his elbows already extended, whereas when Tyson threw from the side, his arm was still cocked, forcing the weight of his body behind the punch. This was a contest between a fighter who didn't fully know what he was doing and one who absolutely did.

When Cus was still around, Mike was well-spoken and pretty reserved. You could see the intelligence behind that hulking frame of his. When Don King got to him, he started doing a 180 in terms of his demeanor in and outside the ring. He was angrier and short-tempered while in the ring, he was no longer as feared. I'm glad Mike's the person he is now. A living legend to be sure.

I read somewhere that his brother is a surgeon. So there's definite high intelligence in the family. Very high.

That’s what I thought! Mike weaknesses was a tall boxer with a good jab. You have had boxers that survived 10 rounds with mike Tyson from James tillis bone hugger smith tony tucker. Ali had been through wars with George Forman who could punch harder than mike. Another boxer was Earnie shavers who had no joke power
