During sparring sessions too many witnesses saw Holmes beat Ali before he was prime and Ali was still dominant in his. Larry had a stronger heavier jab with a much more powerful right cross and uppercut. He was blazing fast with longer reach and had routes to the body like Ali never did. Prime Ali would run from Holmes not engage him.

💠Frazier hurts every time he thinks of Ali. His hostility still rages within. It's a consuming, ugly bitterness he has carried for decades, the result of the hurtful things Ali has said. He insulted his intelligence, his character and his lack of black pride. Ali called Frazier ugly and ignorant and, most disturbingly, an Uncle Tom. Frazier, the son of South Carolina sharecroppers, was deeply wounded by Ali's ridicule which was accepted as socio-political fact and isolated Frazier from the black community. Ali somehow succeeded in making a fight between two African - American men a matter of black and white. Throughout the black community, he was an object of derision and scorn because of the way Ali treated him, it was cruel. The hatred grew intensely within Frazier. He was unable to compete with Ali's eloquence, but he had a left hook that could do the talking for him. Frazier, with loating in his heart and thunder in his Everlast gloves, punished Ali for the things he said. Notice after Ali vs Frazier 1 fight announcers said Frazier was feeling sic in his corner and he just wanted to go back to dressing room. That's because Joe couldn't slow his heart and nervous system back down to a resting state. Joe already had history of high blood pressure and diabetes, he spent nearly two weeks in the hospital for exhaustion, blood pressure, diabetes and kidney problems.. BUT BUT when he was in his 40s Joe was out dancing and singing in the clubs while Ali couldn't talk and his tremors were getting worse. Younger folks haven't a clue what Ali actually did to Joe, let me explain by saying it's exactly like today's Hollywood liberal cancel culture. Frazier hated that Louisville Lip and before fight he got on his knees and prayed to God that he could make Ali perish. Personally i have to admit, everytime Frazier smacked Ali i cheered, We All Cheered, MILLIONS CHEERED "We locked up three times. He won two, and I won one. But look at him now. I think I won all three." -- Joe Frazier

Ali, Also told His beloved sparing partner. One day your time will come, I want you to keep inside your head. You must K O or make the champ quit. This means even me, true conversation! This is why Larry was upset. During the post fight interview in his dressing room! Ali told him Ali loved Larry Holmes. Ali thought he would have been retired by then😢

I was 19 too when this fight took place, and I vividly remember how Holmes resented having to fight Ali, who was his idol too. Holmes even begged Ali not to take this fight, but Ali insisted. Holmes even pulled punches in that fight in an effort not to hurt Ali and cried in the dressing room after the fight was over. So I think it is very unfair to despise Holmes for doing a job he was paid to do and one he really didn't want to do. Ali may been the most revered man on the planet, but it was he and not Holmes who insisted on having this fight.

That was just alot of unnecessary hype. Ali needed to retire after '78, and never fight Holmes. What choice did Holmes have? If he didn't fight Ali, he would look afraid and have a damper put on his reputation. After he slaughtered Ali, the press railroaded him and just gave him a raw deal. Holmes in his heyday was an awesome fighter, but after the Spinks fight, Holmes would've been better off by staying retired too. He was past his prime when he fought Tyson, who was too quick and powerful for Holmes.

Larry Holmes made 20 defenses of the Heavyweight title over a seven year reign and could/should have retired 48-0. Larry is considered to have the best jab in history and could use it as an offensive weapon to make openings for his slashing right hand. Holmes possessed a rock-hard chin, huge heart and excellent stamina.

Those around Douglas sensed a new resolve when he went back into training after his mother's funeral. He was dedicated like never before. 37-0 with 33 KO's unstoppable Mike Tyson was only 23 years old on the night of the fight, February 11, 1990. ali is the one that did something wrong, really. he was in no shape to fight at that point but insisted on it happening (maybe for the huge pay day. maybe because he's frickin' ali and box is what he does). holmes couldn't go in there, as world champ, and take it easy on him. he had to put it to him. ali probably would have been offended if holmes took it easy on him.

The fight vs Holmes and Ali was one of the hardest things I’ve ever watched 😢 I remember it to this day. Ali was my dad’s idol, Ali and Sugar Ray got my dad into boxing, and he was telling little 9yo me that Ali didn’t belong in there anymore. It’s the first I’d ever seen of this legend, and couldn’t imagine him being the greatest ever. He still is.

Ali had Parkinson's disease since at least 1975 from when the symptoms really began to be noticeable. In the fight against Holmes, it was extremely noticeable due to the lack of mind and body coordination and lack of activity from Ali. He knew what to do but his body would not respond at all. Now, had Ali been free of Parkinson's disease, even an older (but healthy) Ali would have beaten a prime Holmes.

God damn, did Cus train a monster. Look at how sharp, and blindingly fast that jab is at 8:31 Tyson was a short, low-reach, in-fighter that relied on offensive movements (weaving, stepping in) for defense. In baseball, a lot of the time it's considered a waste of time and effort to work on something you'll rarely utilize because it's far more beneficial to master your strengths than try and cultivate and foster your weaknesses. Cus saw Tyson, and knew that he had raw talent. In baseball, the legends of the sport are 5 tool players when most players will only have 2 tools that they focus on (speed, power, contact, baserunning, fielding). Cus saw that Tyson was one of these rare athletes that are innately talented, and knew that Tyson could utilize a jab despite it having no business being in his arsenal (beyond the basics of what a jab is meant for) When you get a scientist like Cus, and have him experiment on a specimen like Tyson, you get a heavyweight monster that throws punches he isn't built for as fast as fighters that are almost half his weight. My assumption on Tyson's explosive speed is that Cus knew that you could circumvent the flaw of peekaboo by just having more speed. If you can't throw an effective punch, or wind up fast enough from peekaboo, all you need to do is throw the punch faster. Otherwise, all the weaving, slipping, and ducking means nothing if the opponent just needs to watch for you to start making a punch. This level of brute force perseverance is only possible through the mutual trust and faith Tyson and Cus had in each other. You can't become faster than fast unless you genuinely believe you can reach that next level.
