Sanchez had it all. And by age 23 he had defeated all the best fighters of his era including Puerto Rico’s greatest ever fighter Wilfredo Gomez. In those days no self-respecting champion refused to fight the top competitors, unlike the “Mexican face of boxing” today. Chavez was only about three years younger than Sanchez. It’s a pity that Sanchez died so young so that the two greatest Mexican boxers never faced each other.
@hynekd2 ай бұрын
It’s so sad reading infantile, veiled, insults like the one thrown at Canelo Alvarez in this post. Any comment that includes “in those days” was written by someone who lacks the ability to remember the past accurately. Just say Sanchez was a great fighter, no need to show your own ignorance by insulting others.
@C.STRIKER-yo7zg2 ай бұрын
I totally agree Mate. In the 70s and 80s fighters were of a different breed. Especially Mexican fighters. Those fighters didn’t have rehydration clauses, duck dangerous rivals, have the luxury of picking and choosing from the bottom of the barrel opponents they knew they could beat, and most importantly relinquish their hard earned title belt just to avoid a legitimate opponent who could possibly beat them. Canelo Alvarez is THE ONLY Mexican fighter in the history of the sport to voluntarily give up his title belt rather than face his mandatory which was a prime Gennady Golovkin. The version that destroyed David Lemeiux and had the entire middleweight division running for cover. He holds that disgraceful distinction. As for Salvador Sanchez, he was one for the Ages and a proper representation of what a champion was made of by any metric.

@@JamesBlue-v4d That isn't what I saw. There was the build up to the first Lopez fight, then they showed how Sanchez kept active during the year in between their first and second fight. They then showed the second fight, which was even more impressive to me, as Lopez knew what to expect and still couldn't do anything about Sanchez's constant movement and punches. And Sanchez was a few inches from putting Lopez on his butt in the second fight. Then they showed what could have been an even more impressive fight when Sanchez defeated Wilfredo Gomez, the WBC champ, who was undefeated with 33 wins and 32 knockouts. And he beat him easily. So, for me, this was about more than one fight. The second Lopez fight was impressive, and the Gomez fight maybe more so.
