Guest: Kevin Donovan, chief investigative reporter at the Star, and author of The Billionaire Murders: The Mysterious Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman
It has been four years since the bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman were found murdered in their Toronto home. Despite the fact the that couple were very wealthy and high profile, there have been few updates from the police and no arrests made in this crime. Recently, the Toronto Police gave an update on the case, and released a short video with information about someone they believe to be a suspect. Kevin Donovan has been reporting on this case since it happened, and as some official documents have shown, his work has helped push the official investigation. He joins This Matters to to discuss the latest developments.

I keep coming back to the fact that the children/heirs had the house torn down with all contents still in it. There were photos hanging on walls, and large holes knocked into the drywall as if someone was looking for something. Two people outside the family said the Honey was having a will prepared a few weeks prior to her death, but no one has found it. Honey was not close with any of her children, and I always wondered if she planned on giving her/Barry's money to charity in her will.

"Honey was not close with any of her children, and I always wondered if she planned on giving her/Barry's money to charity in her will." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My understanding is that there was a will; it may have been Barry's, not sure. In the will, everything was left to four business people. Also, unexpectedly, the Sherman's charities were left completely out of the will.
@skeena59
@skeena59 11 ай бұрын
@@kenthompson5723 there is a will, Barry's which left everything to Honey if he predeceased her. Honey also was said to have a will and recently changed it. Why and How? Who benefited and who lost? The fact said will cannot be found speaks volumes. One would think her lawyer has a copy, it would certainly provide an insight into why we was killed also. Both parents die, the kids get everything.

Initially I thought their murder was a result of competition between pharmaceutical companies. However with Barry no longer alive, Apotex has continued to thrive. Therefore, Toronto Police would look @ motive and opportunity. Motive would be who personally gains from Barry and Honey’s demise. Family members. Opportunity, key to home in a lockbox which Real Estate Agency had access to and would know the house has no security cameras as would immediate family members. That would narrow down suspects who masterminded the murder. Obviously a third party was hired to do the murder.

This is such a puzzling case, even after reading K Donovan's book. Now we have a potential killer coming on foot for miles, how does he plan to escape if things go wrong - how does he know the Shermans will be home alone - no live camera in the house - no alarm. And why on earth does he bother with the macabre set up of the bodies by the pool, using a second belt he fetched in the master bedroom 2 floors up. I can't make sense of it.

Some of the documents they are not willing to release are also very puzzling in relation to this walking man theory as well. First the fact they took so long to ask for the publics help to identify him is strange to begin with - but then there are also apparently more images of him that have been barred from release (police say it would reveal the mans "direction of travel"). So if they now want the public to help find him, release all the images.. There is no reason not to. There is also 'security camera photos of Barry and Honey arriving and leaving Apotex after a meeting and them arriving home the night they were murdered' (police say this would reveal if someone was following them). Someone following them sort of throws a wrench in this whole walking man sole suspect theory.. All of this was taken from Kevin Donovan's most recent article a month ago. Must say he is doing a damn fine job, we need more Kevin Donovan's in this world

Both parents needed to die within 30 days for the four children to become heirs. If not, besides Honey as heir, who else would be heirs? If there was no suicide, the insurance would pay the full amount. The insurance payment would not be a huge amount of money, but it would pay the children soon after the deaths, unlike having to wait to settle the estate.

The man walking in front of the Sherman home is referenced in eerie detail by this reporter so similarly to the Bridge Guy in the Delphi Murders of 2 teenage girls. Dropfoot, middle age stout, 5ft4in to 5ft7in, something in his hand, arm not moving. The police made an arrest of a local man 5 yrs later and his trial is scheduled later this year. Eerie. Both happened in 2017.

The murderer needed to find a second belt since he didn't anticipate the warm body flopping forward. The death scene was to mimic the sculpture. Whoever was the mastermind, wanted the murder to garner a MAX amount of public attention and notoriety. Sounds like the ego of one of the children. The child could have had a partnership with a revengeful corporate person. Who knows, maybe the murderer was a revengeful business person who was also Honey's angry lover!?!? So many possibilities for a partnership with one of the children.

I don't know the details of the will. Could the cousin's benifit by both of the Sherman's dying? If the children were heirs, could the cousins sue again for their financial interests due to the terms of Barry's purchase agreement when he bought the company from his uncle, the father of the subject cousins? Was the judge that was murdered by the divorced...... also the same judge that decided the cousins couldn't implement, in some way, the terms of Barry's purchase agreement with their father. It said they were to hv 20% ownership in the original company of their father. If the murdered judge was the same one that ruled against the cousins, perhaps they could have a better chance of a favorable decision by a new judge???

Kevin, in one of your episodes of the Billionaire Murders podcast, you mentioned a phone call from an amateur sleuth who began to talk about "someone who took one of Barry's/Apotex's drugs, or someone who knew someone who took one of Barry's/Apotex's drugs, and [had issues resulting]..." (sic.), but did not elaborate on it any further, dismissing any talk of such as being a "conspiracy theory". While that caller was arguably taking his hypothesis into overly unnecessary territory (Israel/Mossad, etc.), is it not plausible that someone out there was in fact massively aggrieved as a result of a death in their family or of a loved one, caused by an Apotex product, who may have decided to seek direct revenge against Barry in a way that did not involve money? Your colleague Robert Cribb reported on a story in the Star in Feb 2019 regarding a long-term trial of deferiprone (one of the few Apotex drugs that they created themselves, and obviously massively controversial as you know). In that drug trial, a woman in her thirties died in 2013 as a result of side effects from the drug. Two years later, despite the historical and well-catalogued issues with its efficacy, deferiprone was finally given official status by Health Canada. If hypothetically I were the partner of the dead woman, and I were a male who might now be in his early-to-mid forties, and I had a history of PTSD, BPD, and perhaps some mild neuroatypical issues, and that initial PTSD-causing trauma came from being exposed to horrific scenes in my younger years (perhaps in an overseas territory, probably somewhere in Europe, from which I then migrated to Canada, say in the mid 90's), I would be very likely to be utterly furious at the billionaire creator of the drug that killed my partner and potentially swayed towards seeking the fullest revenge possible (again, hypothetically; it obviously isn't me - an Australian man who has never set foot in Canada, sadly!). The guy may have still been trying to find a way around his grief until 2015, whence the drug became fully available, at which point he lost the plot and decided to spend two-and-a-half years planning his get-square. Given the shithouse security in the Sherman home, he probably didn't need 2.5 years of planning. You have also mentioned the Keyser Söze character from "The Usual Suspects" in regard to this individual in the video, again seemingly flippantly, yet my suspicion is that his walking style is deliberately acted out as per that very character, possibly veering between normality and "cripple" in order to throw off any cameras in the area (as such this one appears to be one of a very small number along the route that you have proposed). Indeed, the Keyser Söze angle makes me think that the suspect here is of Eastern European descent, as alluded to above, and (after migrating to Canada in roughly 1994) saw the film when it came out and had the walk (and aspects of the fearsome mythos of that character) subsumed into his very being. I also agree with you that he probably came and went from Leslie Street the night of the murders, and I bet he was eating at The Keg steakhouse for months leading up to the murders, all in preparation. Talk to the staff, present and past! In amongst all of your court dates seeking the release of relevant documents, I think you and Mr Cribb should use whatever mechanism is available to you to determine the identity of that deceased woman (if you have not already done so), and subsequently any information that you can find regarding her family, most specifically a partner. If it amounts to nothing, you don't have to publish a thing. If it turns out the partner has an interesting history and is also not currently in Canada as of early 2018, then dig deeper! If this whole angle has been ruled out, then please give some clarity around that in an article, as opposed to brushing it off.

As for the mystery person, how did he do it and vanish without a trace? Not a hair, not a speck of DNA. This guy with a limp kills both without a struggle. How? Can anybody describe the scenario?
