Das Wiegenlied Summertime war das erste Lied für die Oper, das Gershwin im Februar 1934 fertiggestellt hatte. Die Idee für die Melodie kam Gershwin im Jahr 1926, als er das ukrainische Wiegenlied Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon (Ой ходить сон, коло вікон; Ein Traum geht am Fenster vorüber) von Oleksander Koshetzs Ukrainischem National-Chor hörte
