The Nightmare Before Christmas (also known as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas) is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film directed by Henry Selick in his feature directorial debut and produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town", who stumbles upon "Christmas Town" and schemes to take over the holiday. Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score and provided the singing voice of Jack.

I think the reason Jack and Sally don’t interact a whooole lot during the movie is because they want you to assume they’ve been friends since before it, which is why Sally could tell something was going on with Jack. His behavior in the movie isn’t normal for him, but yeah if you don’t assume that their romance is honestly really funny lmao They released a comic recently that confirmed they knew each other as kids, along with some history on Jack and Oogie also. Knowing that aspect of their dynamic honestly makes them really sweet to me

I think it’s because the script had to be rewritten because Tim Burton hated the idea of making Oogie Boogie Dr. Finkelstein in disguise so they were in a rush to rewrite it and didn’t get to flesh out their characters enough. Also you’ve got to remember the songs were written before the script was and the screenwriter (who just so happened to be Danny Elfman’s girlfriend at the time) wrote the script to match his songs but here it appears she didn’t match it up quite right because of the rushed rewrite.

In the DMC clone, Jack got the Soul Robber. Weirdly, it was like the beta of Nero's fully upgraded Devil Bringer. You got grapples, it would shapeshift size and sharpness, and you could slingshot yourself. Jack himself is like proto Bayonetta even. He'll only actually die when he can't pay tribute for revivals (tho you literally have to pay in his game), he'll cartwheel and axel for dodging, he can steal mini boss weapons. Heck, multiple transformations instead of just Wicked Weaves/Devil Trigger that they only did with Bayo 3 and DMCV is done with Jack beforehand. It's so advanced for a kidified spiritual spinoff.

On Netflix, there is a documentary called The Movies that Made Us and there is an episode for this movie. It just talks about details in how they made the movie. For example, one thing I found interesting was that they didn't have a script for a long time, so Danny Elfman had to start with the music to write the story. The soundtrack is so amazing, I listen to it on Halloween and sometimes Christmas (I see it more as a Halloween movie). Tim Burton was making this movie at the same time as Batman, so he couldn't be as involved as he wanted, so he let Henry Selick direct it. And it wasn't Disney's at first. They denied the movie, but then saw how well it was doing and had it rereleased as Disney.

The thing about Jack and Sally’s dynamic is that with the knowledge that Sally has been to the outside world aside from the laboratory at least 3 other times before the events of this movie, as well as Jack and Sally’s interaction, we can tell that they have definitely talked on multiple occasions, hence calling each other “friends”. However, at first in the movie I think they are more so acquaintances because their dynamic is more like a fangirl and the celebrity they swoon over since Sally is often seen watching from afar while Jack is showered with fame and applause. However, when Sally’s attempts to become closer to him, or make him notice her by gifting Jack that gift basket with the little bottle, that signified the start of their more friend-like dynamic. So throughout the course of this movie, since Jack and Sally have actually talked to each other multiple times, and with Sally showing worry and care towards Jack when creating his Sandy Claws costume, this strengthens their bond. So honestly it is reasonable that Jack calls her “his dearest friend” because she kind of is. the rest of the townsfolk don’t really talk to Jack in the way that a friend does, they treat him like a celebrity, only giving applause and appraisal. While Sally displays genuine care, concern, and compassion towards Jack in the way a friend does, and is the only one shown to do so, which is why it technically makes sense that they would be each other’s “dearest friend”. Even though when Jack goes missing for a bit when he travels to Christmas town the townsfolk do display worry and concern towards Jack being missing it is more in the sense of “how are we going to do next Halloween without him here?”, or “Nooo my favorite celebrity! I can’t believe he’s gone!”. It is simply not the same as Sally’s worry towards him. Like I’ve said, they have the most friend-like dynamic in this entire movie.

Regarding the Tim Burton part, he's not the one who directed this. He wrote the original story (I think it was a book?), but because his name was bigger than the actual director, Henry Selick, as well as his usual swirls being seen from time to time, they put his name on the title

I’d say it’s really more Danny Elfman’s project. If you think of it as a musical or more specifically an operetta, Danny Elfman is the composer AND the librettist and it’s his libretto that the script (written by his girlfriend) is based on (he credits Tim Burton for some of the lyrics though)

I blame his girlfriend for writing a shitty script, well actually she was rushed to rewrite it, so I blame Danny for not writing the script himself (he’s a capable screenwriter, or at least he’s written 3 movies that Disney never let him finish) as he doesn’t seem to have trouble acting if he wrote the script himself (see his “Danny & Buddy” shorts), but maybe he was too busy with other movies and shit.

I have the game , it’s still super fun , they take the music from this movie and rewrite it with different lyrics , the whole point of the story is jack goes off to try to find new ideas for Halloween , but the three kids bring back Oogie boogie , he kidnaps all the holiday leaders cause he wants to be king of all the holidays , Jack comes back and has to fix everything and take out oogie boogie again .. each battle has music and you have to click the buttons to try to match them with the ones on the screen , the best part to me other then the music is that Jack will change into all three looks , his normal look , his Santa and the scarecrow form you first see at the start of the movie I know there is also another game that I believe was for the DS , in the story oogie boogie has Sally kidnapped by mistake and the doctor ask Jack to save her.. in that game it’s the first time they meet .. though in a comic they had them already knowing eachother .. what I liked about the comic is Jack and oogie was friends but when it was time to pick who would be the king Jack won and oogie boogie was angry and it starts the whole lost friendship and his hate towards Jack .. Sally also has her own story where it starts with them getting married ❤ , that book is great and so worth a read , gives a whole new spin on everything and they visit one holiday .. Valentine’s Day together .. and also find out about new doors ( if it was made really into nightmares story it would be great but since Tim didn’t write any of these books I don’t know if they do ) Zero also has his own cute little comic that is also done as a manga , it’s all about him going to Christmas town by mistake And I believe there’s like two other cute comics , nothing big just a cute little story There is also a book coming out this Oct 8th .. It’s based off the series where each Disney story is different , it’s called Sally’s lament .. all I know is that it saids .. What if Sally discovered Christmas Town instead of Jack?” .. I want that book 😂

The Nightmare before Christmas is a lot of things, but is *not* underrated, ok? This is the quintessential Christmas and Halloween movie.

Look Hotel Transylvania may not be high art but Genndy Tartakovsky's direction is DEFINITELY artistic with how he revolutionized 3D animation with 2 D squash And Stretch

Touchstone Pictures initially distributed this film, so it was technically a Disney film until it was re-released for the first time in 2006 through Disney full-time. Also, what does Kor celebrate, then, if he doesn't celebrate the holidays?

Pretty sure Kor is a former jehovah's witness. J. Witnesses generally dont celebrate holidays, including birthdays. I think the only excetptions being easter and wedding anniversaries.

@@midge.a.smidge I briefly lived with Jehovah’s Witness foster parents when I was 9. I didn’t like their attitude about holidays at first but after spending a few holidays at either an orphanage or with another, more abusive foster parent who used presents as guilt trips I’m much more sympathetic to their point of view.

It was unpopular when it first came out. Hardly anybody had it on video. It came out on my 4th birthday but I didn’t get to see it until I was 8 and I was weirded out by the commercials for adult movies at the beginning of the tape.
