The Nightmare Of Food Delivery In NYC

App-based delivery drivers in New York City snake through traffic, dodging life-threatening accidents and robberies, to meet strict time requirements they say put their lives at risk.
These drivers, mostly immigrants, were deemed essential during the pandemic. But many say the city and police have failed to protect them. More than a dozen delivery workers were killed in 2021.
Here's a look into the daily challenges drivers face on the job and on the road.

I’m a delivery biker and how I see it is the apps make deliveries more efficient. instead of having to drive back and forth to the same restaurant like before, now a biker can pick up an order from a restaurant near the place he just dropped off food. If it were cheaper to have the restaurant deliver it then most restaurants would still be doing that

Two decades ago, restaurant-quality meal delivery was limited to foods such as pizza and Chinese. Nowadays, food delivery has become a global market worth more than $150 billion. The delivery drivers suffers bc US legislators were just too slow to react to food delivery industry growth. They merely exploiting the dearth of regulations.

I work part time food delivery and it’s a fun job a lot of the time but the full time guys have it rough since it feeds their family’s. A big problem I’ve personally encountered is the lack infrastructure in the Mta subway for bikes. Many delivery riders use the subway to commute to their delivery zones and we are constantly disrespected on the subway for bringing these bikes in the train. A solution would be for the MTa to add bike racks in the train cars or designate the last train car in every train as bike only. Mta recommends all bikes to go to the back of train anyway but pedestrians don’t know that and many pedestrians go to the back of the train where all the bikes are and take up space. We can’t even sit down after a long day cause of ignorant people 🤦‍♂️

I do this for one of those companies and here's my opinion for what it is worth. Make it a side-job, not your main source of income. It is fine to do a few deliveries now and then, it is tedious to work all day long trying to make ends meat. This is what I do. I work when it is dry only and when I feel like working. I also don't care what my stats are as I don't care how long I'll wait between orders. I listen to audiobooks and therefore my time is not wasted. Aproach this job as a hobby, not as a source of income and you'll be fine. And another thing: don't use an electric bike. Yes, an electric bike gives you the opportunity to work faster and longer, but it also means you exercise less and you worry about it being stolen more. Bottom line: don't make such a job your profession and you'll be fine.

For places like NYC, cars would not work. (Not taking into account the amount of $ it would take for these companies to unwillingly spend on the purchase for a fleet of cars, their storage, maintenance and insurance). Their is no profitable business model where on a good day delivery would take at least an hour. Customers would have to agree to meet the driver on the street to swoop up their food cuz' good luck finding somewhere to pull over in Manhattan. I believe a valid question (and argument in favor for) is why aren't these companies doing more for their current employees ("contractors") within their current operating model? The companies should be the ones opening the resting/bike charging stations throughout the city, not the deliverers themselves. Create incentive programs. For example, after you've completed X number of deliveries in a week, your hourly rate is doubled for the remainder of the week. Or, after working for the company X amount of time, you never have to pay out of pocket for bike brake pads ever again.

At least 11 House Republicans represent large cities with murder rates even higher than Chicago’s. All of them have A ratings from the National Rifle Association, earned from a record of supporting gun rights and opposing gun control. Five members of Congress who represent cities with murder rates that are more than triple the national average: Rep Jackie Walorski, whose district includes South Bend, Indiana, Rep Kevin Yoder, whose district includes Kansas City, Kansas, Rep Charles Fleischman, who district includes Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Reps David Rouzer and Walter Jones, who districts include parts of Wilmington, North Carolina. The others are: Michael Turner who represents Dayton, Ohio, with a murder rate four times the national average; Garret Graves who represents Baton Rouge, which has a murder rate five times the national average; and Gregg Harper who represents Jackson, Mississippi, which has a murder rate nearly eight times the national average. If cities have become synonymous with Democratic politics today, that is true in part because Republicans have largely given up on them. Over the course of decades, Republicans ceased competing seriously for urban voters in presidential elections and representing them in Congress. Republican big-city mayors became rare. And along the way, the Republican Party nationally has grown muted on possible solutions to violence, inequality, poverty and segregation in cities.Trump and his surrogates have pushed that history to its seeming conclusion: Rural and suburban problems in America today are national problems - but urban problems are Democratic problems. Numerous studies suggest that the partisanship of mayors has limited effect on much of anything: not just crime, but also tax policy, social policy and economic outcomes. This is partly because mayors are constrained in their ability to execute ideological agendas. Cities can’t run deficits. States limit their authority to raise taxes and enact laws on many issues. And cities lack the power the federal government has to shape labor laws, or immigration policies that can affect their population growth. As cities have confronted these problems over decades, Republicans in Washington have cut funding to cities and programs they relied on.

@@skapunkoialternativeliving6522 For most people who have to work crappy jobs, they don't have time to look for another job. Most people live paycheck to paycheck. They don't have time and or cant afford to go to college or university to "raise their value." It's impossible for many people simply because they're far too busy working hard just to keep a roof over their head. You are naive and the walking taking definition of survivorship bias. The hardest working among us usually get the worst pay, proof that Meratocrocy is just a myth. The worst performing CEO's usually get paid the most and actually acting like people who do crappy jobs should just magically get enough free time off work to look for better work while still being able to pay the bills when they bearly survive on the hours they can get is silly. I never said value is disgusting, dont change what I've said to strawman me. I said treating people who have no choice to work terrible jobs as less valuable people is disgusting. Acting like they have a choice is actually stupid. Google survivorship bias and stop pretending these people choose the work crappy jobs that someone has to do.

Customers don't tip much, but that's to be expected. During the pandemic I worked in five apartments per day (or more) and saw so many young people who are oblivious to working class people.
