I was sent a pack of the nikko hellgrammites to try out, when i started fishing with them, i was getting aggressive attacks even from finicky fish. After purchasing some for myself and also trying different colors that were sent to me, I can say that this lure is great for smallmouth bass and about every kind of bass that can get its mouth around it.

Creek smallies and rock bass love these things, and earlier this week I caught some nice stock lake rainbows. Totally unexpected! Still coming up with new ways to rig it too. So far an 1/8 oz darter jig head has been the most productive.

Once the gills are damamged to that degree you might as well keep em. To my experience I've seldon seen fish survive after a bad bleeding gill hook. But as a southern fisherman usually head south to fish but it appears im missing some GREAT hidden creek action! Think I'll give the hellgrammite lure a shot on some secret side creeks. Right, the gill cut to fish is like the jugler to us.You are going to bleed out. May as well eat it or it's a waste. Depending on the water your fishing in. Bass and crappie normally aren't to bad though.

We would buy Hellgrammites fishing the Delaware River. as long there was fish there we caught them. Ive seen live Hellies out fish live minnows 8 to 1! They became illegal to sell in NJ or just too expensive. So we would catch our own. A small net downstream of rocks that you would kick over would produce nice sized Hellies and crayfish(we still call them Crayfish in Jersey).

I use hellgrammite on the Brazos river below Possum Kingdom lake and catch all sorts of fish on it. I haven't used the Nikko lures yet, but I just ordered some for this coming fishing season.

Love that lure, when i fished alot i used to suffer to buy helgamites. Sometimes driving 30 miles outta the way. If i could have found them rubber ones i would have been so happy. I would put a small split shot on the line 12" up, and would try a jig head. Somehow i got to get back out and fish angai. How about hooking it weedless and squeezing a small splitshot on the hook?? I think i would try it. I want to get near the snaggs. Looks like great fun. When i was buying them live were a buck each, And a sob to find. Great watching you go.

Got mine yesterday and tried it today. I'm up to like 60 casts and not one bite. They say there is no wrong way to rig these things... well I proved that wrong. The first way I rigged it, it had no action... it just looked like any other stick floating in the water so I changed the hook and added a weight. Now I had action... it did a barrel roll all the way on the retrieve. I'm pretty sure hellgrammites don't usually do that. :(

Yes for sure. It seems the smaller the water the less I catch when it’s colder. A lot of times little creeks that I know are full of fish will look completely deserted in the cold weather, but as soon as it warms up the fish get active

Hey buddy, was that a 1/15oz Ned jighead? I’m headed to some tailwaters in about four hours and I just got my Hellgrammites in. I’m partial to ned rigs... also mine are 3” which seem to be all I can find, but they look like a different color, might be the video. Mine seem to be almost black/red/silver/green. I’m taking two setups with me for that wading river (damn it’s gonna be cold), my other is set up with nano and a good weedless because I still have faith in my black/purple fleck zoom worm. Honestly where I’m at I should probably swap one of my setups to a crappie rig. But I want some big rock bass and if I’m lucky a largemouth. Suggestions would be more than gratefully approved. My father and I keep up with you! Didn’t mean to make this longer than necessary. Bottom line: need the ned rig size and also how did you work the lure on retrieve. Thanks brother!

it really depends on how much water flow and how heavy your line is for the jighead size. yes i usually use 1/15 oz but lighter or heavier will work. i like to imagine the fish want to hit a slow falling hellgrammite, and i just twitch it and let it sink or also maybe let it sing to the bottom and twitch it across the rocks. the downside of letting it sink all the way down is getting stuck in the rocks. there is really no wrong way to fish it, the lure looks like food and is also scented.

The Bass Pro version is a more dence plastic, pretty much like any other soft plastic. The lures Creek Fishing Adventures is using appear to be more like the elaztec plastics that Z-Man uses. The BPS product is excellent, and at a good price. I don't think they will hold up as well however.

I have the Nikko Hellgrammites, Im on the creeks, spending hours trying and getting nada. Nothing. No bites. We've seen lots of curious interest but no actual bites. What am I doing wrong? 38 yo fishing novice trying my damndest to catch something with my son to light a spark in him and it's just not working. Fishing east TN creeks and streams. Currently outside the Smokies near Cosby.

You have to see past the upfront cost. I've personally done over 100 bass on a single Nikko hellgrammite. On a per catch basis, it's the cheapest thing out there. When fishing another hellgrammite shown on this channel, the cost per catch was probably about 2-10 more expensive than the Nikko. Plus, I get more fish on the Nikko. And they float, too.
