Have to disagree about the Powell one. While the board itself may have been fairly bad, it was likely the start point of what became the flight deck. Which in my opinion makes it quite important.
@darkstardavros
@darkstardavros 2 жыл бұрын
Powell already had fibreglass reinforced deck's long before the bonite stuff. They stopped making them as the seven ply was a cheaper alternative. Santa Cruz did a black top series for a while but they didn't work too well. I suspect that now that the sport has gone big time again manufacturers can start messing around with materials again. Hence we have the Powell flite deck's. I guess that it won't be long before there's more weird and wonderful ideas wandering down the path. Lol 😆😆😈

I actually can speak on this, my dad's company created, (I can't remember off hand since I was pretty young) either the original Sky Hooks, or he took the idea and changed them a bit. He had a plastic version and an aluminum version. His company was Xtreme Wheelz. The reason he made them wasn't for street skating, but for people going off road skating to have a bit more grip, but still be able to bail out if they needed to. Some people used them for other things, but that was the original idea.

Aluminum does amazing on a mountain bike(or any bicyle for that matter) , despite frame torsion when taking a drop of some kind , due to the aluminum frame being tubes connected in comparison to a nearly flat board with very little structural integrity. Aluminum does worse under stress when made to be flat considering the way skateboards are manufactured.

Frankie Hill was sponsored by Tail Devils. Can't blame him, it's money. The industry really screwed him over, anyway. Not that it's a bad product, it's just kind of a bummer what happened to his career, because he was really at the forefront of everything that was happening from the late 80's through the early 90's. If Powell would have seriously invested in getting his knee fixed, maybe they would have stayed more relevant with having another heavy hitter on their team besides Cab. @@russelljenkins6929 I'm sure they probably did suck...I was just curious if I was the only one who remembered them back in the "good ole days" of getting a new CCS mag that was about as fat as a chapter book and had decks and shoes from companies we couldn't find at a local skate shop on the east coast. But From my knowledge of Lib Tech they were like a snowboard company and then in like the mid 90's made a few decks. Seeing as how I was between the age of like 8-12 at the time I saw one in CCS and it had alternating layers of wood and fiberglass or possibly carbon fiber. (I have seen the new carbon fiber decks you're referring to though, but just like the libtech board I had...it lasted forever...like so long that we couldn't focus it if we tried. So as far as durability it was great, but it lost its pop in a month or two.

@@illmuskyhunter3313 I'll agree that shit did have pop, but after using it for like 8 months as a kid....I was dying to find a fat kid or someone who could break it in half for me so I would have a good excuse for my mom on why I needed a ride to the skate shop to get a new deck ( closest skate shop was 40ish miles from our house, so it was either snag a ride once or twice a year there. Or wait for the next CCS mag to find some stuff on sale haha)

We LOVED devil tails as kids Used to spend so much of our extra allowance on them. But it is true, it does take extra effort to get a pop for tricks and pending how many you had on, the weight did make a noticeable change. As we got older and they became harder to find, we just realized they were extra as hell And we were getting higher ollies and kick flips cause the long period of time having those on our decks made us stronger and popping and ollie. We cant lie though, the effect itself was really cool.

i requested tail devils every week at my local skate shops, called around & no one had them till finally they got an order of them. The worst part was the plastic would break by the screws / you would wear the screws down faster than the flynt & it would fall off. As a kid that gimmick was awesome however, sparking up the sidewalk as you stopped gave that same feeling you'd get pulling the rear brake & skidding on a BMX bike

I'm just really glad that no one followed through on the random idea I had when my high school physics teacher told us to invent something - I loved skating (still love watching edits) and had what I thought was a brilliant idea. I was going to make electromagnets that would sit outside the wheel and act on the metal to literally slow your roll. Wired up a battery pack, sliding rheostat so that it wasn't either on or off - it looked AWESOME. Rather, it LOOKED awesome. 1. It didn't work. Like, AT ALL. 2. If it HAD worked, it would have been bad because of momentum (not the wheels, I was trying this on Kryptos and OJs back in the 80s). When you brake on a bike, you have something keeping you from going forward. On a skateboard ... yeah. It was probably a mercy it didn't work. If it had, the battery pack and wiring and weight would have made it only "useful" for longboards. On the bright side, I learned how to make electromagnets from scratch, learned to do some rudimentary soldering and wiring, and learned a REALLY bad way to stop a skateboard. That all yielded knowledge, and that's progress, right? ;)

Fun to watch the delivery, and I had to watch bc I got lured into the kickstarter for Avenue trucks. However, it's painfully obvious that he's just guessing about the whole reaction. HOWEVER - he's right in that they're no good. Or at least I didn't feel like getting over the learning curve. Popping felt weird. Changed the bushings too bc king pin stuck out when tightened to about medium. Loose trucks plus the suspension was too much.Tried them for about 8 sessions and switched back to old ones, makes you really appreciate the control you have.
@lafemmedevastation

It's quite common to change bushings to suit your tastes with new trucks in general tho, yes? I'm not indoctrinated to the standard truck feel, so I don't have a learning curve with them in that regard. Anyway I got them for impact cushioning. Cheers!

I thought for sure you'd have Tracker sixtracks in this list. They were awesome, but had a tendency to break at the hanger way faster than any other truck. I used to skate back in the mid 80's, and the way we avoided, (for the most part), fart rocks was with softer wheels. My friends were rockin' the old Powell 85's and they were soft enough to compress, and allow the rocks to be rolled over. Not all the time, mind you, but way easier than the 97's lol.

Damn, no mention of Lox? They drilled 2 holes into your board and put these lock nuts on top of the board that came along with a special pair of shoes with matching hole in the sole, so you basically lock your shoes to the board and effectively make a snowboard. It was meant for people who couldn't Ollie I guess, to be able to hit and grind curbs or do like 360 spins, but if you can't even Ollie, you got no business doing any of that stuff anyways. More than likely, they turned into hospital trips since you couldn't bail off your board and use your feet to catch yourself so you ate shit way harder. Yeah you were able to turn your foot and unlock off, but who the hell is going to react that fast to unlock their feet when their bailing? Hahahh

It didn't help.....lmao. if I would've kept practicing, I probably would've been quite decent at it. I was already able to land kick, heel and varial flips, and almost had 360 flips down. Unfortunately, I ended up liking smoking weed better than skating when I was 13. Which of course led to all sorts of other drugs, booze and partying throughout my teens and 1st half of my 20s. At 32, I think I'm past the point of picking it up again, haha. Don't do drugs, kids! Especially heroin...

But I never heard about them after that, so maybe it was a So. Cal. thing only?
