@paulszki9 күн бұрын
I mean, when I have "the choice", I'll turn it on. The issue really is, that most of the time it's not a real choice because it either tanks performance or it simply doesn't look better, just a bit ... different. But that's not really a knock against raytracing as a technology. I have an RTX 3090 and you better believe I'm turning on raytracing in modern titles. That said, raytracing acceleration hardware simply isn't necessary because it's just not good/cheap/feasible enough most the time anyway. The hardware that CAN run actual RT at pleasing fidelity is too pricey and for game tripple-a developers it's a burden to have to create their game with both RT and non-RT hardware in mind and the result is often lacking. And I think, Nintendo being Nintendo they'll just get every last drop of power our of their little console to make their games look beautiful. Nobody is looking at Super Mario Wonder saying "this looks ugly". So I'm sure Nintendo will USE the buzz-word "raytracing" in their presentations because that's what some consumers will respond to and maybe the occasional game will have raytraced shadows or raytraced reflections in some scenes, so they can put "raytraced graphics!" somewhere on the box. But I have no doubt that Nintendo will dazzle us graphically in other ways. They're not making a console with roughly ps4-pro level hardware (and shiny DLSS upscaling/anti-aliasing on top) and not deliver some incredible moments. Like, think of some of the most impressive games on the PS4. Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2, all of which had breathtaking moments. RT simply isn't needed to deliver that.

Anyone who cares about those things will likely own a high-end PC, which is why Sony has literally shot themselves in the foot by targeting that demographic.
@paulszki8 күн бұрын
@ I don't think Sony, a corporate entity, can "literally" shoot themselves in the foot. That said, PS5 has been selling well enough. 70 million sold units after 4 years is pretty alright and basically on par with most consoles historically. No real foot shooting going on here. The issue of the current generation isn't hardware or PC competition, it's a lack of games. It's been 4 years and the amount of tripple-a "exclusive" single player games, that people were getting the console for, is a single digit number. The worst offender is Naughty Dog wasting time on a canceled live-service game and remakes/remasters of Uncharted/Last of Us. Games have become too big and too expensive to make and so, Microsoft and Sony are looking at other platforms to sell their games. Nintendo, at least with their first party titles had way less of a problem here, simply because their games never really aim to be these monolithic games like Assassin's Creed or ultra-cinematic Spider-Man 2. In that way the constraining hardware of the Switch may have been a blessing in disguise. Can't waste millions on assets and content, if your console is too weak to process it. Low-poly trees it is! That does make me wonder, whether they're going to run into scope-creep-troubles with the new Switch 2, simply because it can just do way more or if Nintendo is keenly aware of "better hardware, higher development costs" and are adressing this in their planing.

8:25 it's 102GB/s when docked, and it's LPDDR5X just downclocked to LPDDR5 speeds, these clocks are found in upcoming Switch firmware 20.0.0, they are datamined but they are also not likely to be the final firmware of Switch 2, thus the clocks can change, though likely only upwards. GPU handheld clock 460MHz was a late edition to Switch's GPU profiles, even the 384MHz clock that was available at launch was not widely used over the 307MHz clock.
@kninezbanks9 күн бұрын
You cannot compare the calculation method of the pre-ampere gpu's with post-ampere gpus. Starting with ampere, each cuda core was capable of 2 threads so nvidia lied and doubled the number of cuda cores. 2080Ti had 4352 Shaders 3080 had 8704 Shaders Double the shaders, same clocks, yet only about 30 to 35% faster. That's because the 3080 is just a 2080Ti with Hyperthreading. The GPU on the switch 2 isn't 1536 shaders. It's 768 Shaders Cores, 1536 Shader Threads. It's basically hyperthreading/SMT for GPUs. It only adds about 30 to 35% more performance. Real calculation. Docked: 768 * 2 * 1007 Mhz = 2.06Tflops Real calculation. Handheld: 768 * 2 * 561 Mhz * 1.333 = 1.15 Tflops OG Switch. Docked: 256 * 2 * 768 Mhz = 0.393 Tflops OG Switch. Handheld: 256 * 2 * 460 Mhz = 0.235 Tflops Performance difference; Docked: 2.06/0.393 = 5.24 times faster Performance difference; Handheld: 1.15/0.235 = 4.9 times faster Overall, the new switch is about 5 times faster with four times the memory bandwidth (25.6 GB/s vs 102.4 GB/s) and 4 times the memory capacity (4GB vs 12GB). It isn't a powerhouse but with lots of optimization, it will suffice. It is PS4 level on a newer architecture, ray-tracing, DLSS, Mesh Shaders, More memory, faster emmc & faster SD Card speeds. The Switch Ran most PS3 Games well, but ran PS4 Games like crap. Expect Switch 2 to run PS4 games well but run PS5 games like crap. That's okay because most ps5 games are just ps4 games running at higher resolutions/framerates. I'm still buying one, only for indies, exclusives and sports games. The rest on my gaming pc.

@davilkusgames Yeah, Nvidia lied. I think even AMD has started doing the same with their newer RDNA architectures. Even Mark Cerny in the PS5 Showcase called out the "Floplation" of recent GPUs, also pointed out by Digital foundry. Again, there's nothing wrong with comparing the "flops" of the 4070 to 5070. You just aren't meant to compare older traditional GPUs with newer ones. It would be like comparing Celsius to Fahrenheit. Both are temperature units, both mean something, only accurate when comparing other temperature of the same unit. According to leaks, handled mode has 1.71 TFLOps
@kninezbanks8 күн бұрын
@ "According to leaks, handled mode has 1.71 TFLOps" That's false. They got that by calculating 1536 * 2 * 561 = 1723392 or around 1.72 Tflops Think of it like CPUs, they have something called Hyperthreading or SMT (AMD CPUS). You see a CPU say 8 Cores, 16 Threads. It means 8 Physical cores, each core has two threads. Hyperthreading only adds like 30-40% performance. Not double. Newer GPUs are capable of two threads per shader but it doesn't double performance. Nvidia chose to double the number of shaders since each physical shader was capable of two threads. This led to "flopflation". Mostly, you can't compare current flops with older flops. in FP32 Float (typical metric) 3080 had 29.77 Tflops 2080Ti had 13.45 Tflops 3080 should be 121% faster, more than twice the performance of the 2080Ti. Yet it was only 30 to 40% faster, at best 50% faster. If the leaks are true; The switch 2 doesn't have 1536 Shaders, it has 768 cores, 1536 threads. The real calculation is 768 * 2 * 561 * 1.333 = 1148640 or around 1.15Tflops On average, those extra threads increase performance by 33%. In summary, don't compare Ampere Flops to Maxwell flops directly to gauge performance increases.

A few things to add specifically in regards to DLSS: That feature is run on Tensor cores of which the Switch 2's T239 chip has 48 Tensor cores - which is a bit lower than PC Ampere, but is the first time it'll be used on a handheld format for gaming. However, DLSS is only one part of the Tensor cores' capabilities. In Switch 1, The TX1 Cuda cores are capable of offering a mixed precision option of rendering double-speed FP16 (0.388TF Portable, 0.786 Docked) instead of the standard FP32 (0.194TF Portable, 0.393 Docked). By switching between these two rendering modes, this is the secret ingredient which allowed Switch 1 to punch above it's weight, as the older AMD GPUs of the PS4 and Xbox One had no mixed precision at all. Those could only choose between 1x FP32 or 1x FP16. Today, the modern AMD chips in PS5 and Xbox Series X/S now support double-speed FP16, however Nvidia changed things up again starting with Ampere. The 1536 Cuda cores on Switch 2 have to choose between 1x FP32 or 1x FP16, but the Tensor cores can also be used for FP16 and other calculations using Concurrent Mixed Precision! So theoretically if a developer decided to not use DLSS at all (though in reality they can still assign part of the Tensor cores to DLSS), they can use both 1.7TF Portable/3.3TF Docked FP32 *AND* up to 1.7TF Portable/3.3TF Docked FP16 - nearly DOUBLING the Switch 2's output without DLSS!

@scaryhobbit21110 сағат бұрын
@@Fusion05 RT is seperate. T239 won't be able to do RT on the level of regular Nvidia GPUs, but it can still do a light amount of it to again close the gap between Switch 2 and PS5/Xbox. Offloading RT to its own type of core is more efficient than having to brute force RT using the Shader cores like the AMD consoles have to do. Important to note also about the 6.6 Tflops is that it's the max only if DLSS isn't used at all. If the dev wants to use DLSS, it will have to take up a portion of the Tensor cores, which I hear may be around 20% of the T cores. IMO worst case, if DLSS uses 50% of T cores, that would leave 4.95 TFlops max for raster. _But,_ in exchange DLSS makes it much easier to project to 4K without having to waste power brute forcing it, so developers may be able to fit _more_ graphical effects into their game, while running at a lower resolution, and have DLSS upcale the final picture to 4K.

@giornogiovanna6472 yh 💯 both would be great especially as call of duty and other fps games will be on the switch 2 and mouse input for aiming is more accurate as far as most people are concerned me personally can't get the muscle memory built up for it other than that I hope at least that they release a separate joycon type with analog triggers that would give people a choice in what they prefer
@giornogiovanna64726 күн бұрын
Some games might benefit from it not being analog, for faster button presses or make it easier to go right/left in UI elements like in Zelda(haven't played it in a while so im not 100% sure). The nature of Nintendo games are very different but it seems like we will get more availibility for third party games. The mouse functionality is still cool (especially for third party games), maybe they will make an RTS using it or something else that pops off. Nintendo did tons of crazy stuff in the past I hope they Switch it up, they seem to play it safe but you never know. Honestly I can't be hyped for a device which doesn't have any new games announced which I don't want to play on pc, except Mariokart has been teased in the trailer but they made one for almost every big console release so nobody is surprised.

@@giornogiovanna6472that’s a very specific case though, I’d much rather have analogue triggers than instant clicks considering I’ve never had a problem with that on any other controller. We’re actually getting alot of benefit from the Xbox series S. all the third party developers are already making rendered down versions of the current get games, heck even gta 6 is coming to it. The switch 2’s third party catalog will way larger than the switch 1 because of the series s
@FrameRated7 күн бұрын
I agree with this fully! I talked to a few folks on here about this too and use the Series S as my explanation for why I think GTA6 may come to S2 as well. Rockstar stated they have no concerns getting GTA 6 to run on Series S, so since series S is like 22%-ish away in raw graphics compute, as long as the CPU of the S2 and the memory bandwidth don’t hold back the ability for the game to be run from any unforeseen tech used in the game we don’t know about, I can see them having the ability to cut back graphics / making optimizations, targeting 30 fps and using aggressive DLSS settings to make it work if they need to!

Most of Nintendo’s games ran at or close to 1080p with many, many of their titles running at 60fps, whereas most games on the 360 and ps3 ran at or below 720p. Plus, the switch 1 is compatible with most modern engines like the RE engine, Unity. Azura and UE. For example, zombie army 4 runs at 1080p, 30fps on ps4 and on the switch, well, it runs mostly at 1080p, 30fps. Not bad considering the slower cpu and less ram to pull from!

How does it compare to the Steam deck? because if its more expensive than the SD but costs more then that's a deal breaker.
@FrameRated8 күн бұрын
The Steam Deck 1 is slightly behind in raw raster and can't be specifically optimized for the same way as the S2, higher GB and OLED models will likely cost more than the S2 as well, and the S2 has hardware to support AI reconstruction (DLSS) to improve performance without much of a hit to image quality in doing so. In contrast, the Steam Deck uses FSR, which does upscaling at a software level. It does the job, but isn't as good as DLSS and hardware-based solutions as far as image quality and performance goes. So it's a trade off - being that the Steam Deck has the option of being a full fledged windows PC.

The system has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, it's unclear how much is available for games and what's reserved for the OS at this time. @@FrameRated Sounds interesting. Do you think Rockstar will support the console like with porting GTA 6 to Switch 2 in the future?
@FrameRated8 күн бұрын
@@doclouis4236 This is an interesting thought I have been thinking a lot about! Rockstar has said that they have no concerns getting GTA 6 run on the Xbox Series S during all the Series S hate over the last year. Since the Switch 2 is about 22% slower than the Series S in pure theoretical raster (docked), but also has DLSS capabilities, I think the Switch 2 should be able to handle GTA 6 with cutback graphics and lower native render than other games that is then tidied up with DLSS and targets 30 FPS. The few concerns I have over this are 1. The memory bandwidth of the Switch 2 is more similar to a Xbox One from 2013 and we still don't know exactly how powerful the CPU is compared to the Series S, which has a powerful CPU compared to it's GPU. if we are going by clock speeds,. the Series S has 8 cores at 3.4Ghz, The Switch 2 is rumored to have 8 cores too, but at just over 1 GHz. Comparing the IPC performance of an Nvidia and AMD CPU isn't possible until we have these in our hands and can do more testing, but can give us an idea. Even with a very advanced CPU architecture, the CPU is likely to be very limited compared to the other consoles. That all said, as long as the CPU and memory bandwidth don't bottleneck the S2 in any unforeseen ways that can't be worked around no matter what the resolution, settings cutback or FPS target is on really advanced games, I am hoping to eventually see GTA 6 come over to the S2.

would this be the first high end nintendo console ever? bc even the switch was underpowered at launch.
@FrameRated8 күн бұрын
The S2 is still underpowered at launched when compared to a lot of things, sadly, but the Switch is sort of in its own league. Really due to it being Nintendo and their first party entertainment as well as their seamless portable-to-TV home console hybrid that contains said first party entertainment, so when compared to the S1, the S2 is a massive generational leap ahead with a lot more resources at its disposal and pure compute power with additional tech to enhance that further such as DLS, but when compared to other current gen home consoles, it falls very short (save for Series S). For many portable gaming handheld options, it is a bit behind as well, but will likely cost a good deal less when compared + there isn’t as much of a delta performance wise there compared to the premium consoles from Sony/Microsoft and gaming desktop/laptops. I am excited to see what they can do with this hardware and their talent on game creation ☺️

I agree! I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised and we will get likewise "impossible ports" (as digital foundry would call it) on the Switch 2 since they we able to achieve a lot with the S1 :)

DLSS 4 brough a big leap on 3.x in its transformer model. It matches the native res with significant less artifacts. However, it is slower. You lose like 5% fps when in super resolution mode, abd like 40% in ray-tracing mode. If I would bet, demanding games would target 540p rendering, with DLSS to 1080p on handheld, with ray-tracing off. Docked, 720 to 1440p, with ray-tracing, or even 1080p to 4k with ray-tracing off.

I feel we will finally have pretty much unrestrained capabilities on Switch 2 to make any game world and gameplay idea come to life. Can't wait!

Yess! Especially with how much TLC Nintendo provided their first party games. So many take every ounce of juice the Switch had and they use creative ways to push this further. Having this much more horse power and hardware spec with new technologies like DLSS and RT have me so hype to see what they can do! Nintendo blew the pants off me when I saw Doom Eternal was coming to switch and looked really good still (even if at 30fps), I really can only imagine with the Switch 2 😍

Getting closer to PS4 Pro and Series S ... And DLSS may close the gap.

Exactly :) The only Achilles heel of the S2 GPU is the memory bandwidth, much better than S1, but still much slower than the PS4 and is akin to Xbox One, but that can be negated with lower res and textures (which can be reverse negated again by DLSS)

Whatever it is, it will have dlss to get those extra frames.

DLSS is kinda useless unless they're targeting 1440p. Frame gen seems more useful to me. Get the game running at 60fps natively and use frame gen to get 120fps. Other then that frame gen is useless because it has massive artefact issues when running below 60fps. DLSS to get it to 1080p is silly. Not worth it. 1080p 60fps in handheld and 1440p 120fps DLSS Frame gen docked seems good to me or 1440p DLSS 60fps no frame gen as an option and switched to automatically on TV's that don't support it. Also 1080p 60fps native for 1080p Tv's/Monitors. Also 1080p 120fps with frame gen on 1080p monitors lmao.

Nintendo will optimize their games very good that's enough for me.
