I drive NV200s for a living and I've thought of how one could convert one into a camper. This conversion is nothing less than incredible!!! Kind of reminiscent of my old '68 VW Komi Bus but BETTER! Great job!!!
@RicardoRoams6 жыл бұрын
Rrudy DeDogg - Since you drive these Nissans for a living, my question to you is what about the power? It seems to me you're asking a lot of this little 136 h.p. 4 cylinder engine. With all the camping equipment built in, 10 gallons of water, 2 adults and their personal items, do you think this vehicle could handle highway and mountain driving?
@rrudydedogg37796 жыл бұрын
Geezed Out, I currently drive an NV200 locally but for an 8-month period I drove one to and from Raleigh, NC, with local stops in that metropolis. This was a trip of 4 1/2 hours each way on the interstate in a variety of weather and road conditions. The company I work with was developing a new location there and I was transporting both products and supplies that would completely fill the van top to bottom, front to back and the loads were not light in weight. The NV200 handled things easily and I rarely felt the added weight though it did help to keep from being blown around by the big rigs. Even with these loads I was able to get 27 mpg. I never had an issue with the Nissan which can't be said for the Ford Transit 250 that took over that route. A good many years ago I had a VW Kombi bus with the Westfalia conversion. It boasted 60 horse power and I drove it across the country twice with the wife and kids. Just a simple comparison. I would buy a Recon without reservation.....if I could afford it.

That's the NV200 configured into a camping van. I own the e-NV200 and use it for camping quite a bit. Since it's electric I have access to heating and air conditioning all night without any noise or air pollution to bother other campers. I also have a 1,500 Watt power inverter that is hooked up to the big traction battery on my van so I can power everything I need and once again, not bother anyone else with unwanted noise you usually get from gasoline generators. These little vans are really quite roomy inside and are an overlooked alternative to the bigger campers out there. Great job!

I have a 40kWh eNV200 getting delivered next week. Planning on doing a conversion myself. The 40kWh has a few extra advantages for conversion over the old 24kWh (apart from the range being much more reasonable). One is it has a built-in nissan supplied 1kW inverter... the second is that the 40kWh is now tow rated so you can put a hitch on.
@ElectrifiedJourneys6 жыл бұрын
The 40kWh is tow rated now? That means they must have given it a bigger inverter like the new Leaf. You are going to love it, my e-NV200 has a 1,500 power inverter in it as well and that gives the van an advantage over other vans for converting plus the e-NV’s flat floor and low profile wheel wells. 👍🙂👍
@cros136 жыл бұрын
Yup, tow rating for a 430kg trailer. Of course it can tow much more... just not legally. As part of the 40kWh Leaf launch commercial they also did a record electric towing attempt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opC2iIeneMmcfMk . But yeah the tow rating is there because the sustained power output on the 40kWh pack is higher than the 24kWh, so Nissan were comfortable warrantying the van for towing at motorway speeds. AFAIK the motor and it's power electronics are the same as the 24kWh. One thing I don't know is whether this new built-in AC inverter (which Nissan are marketing as "PowerPort" with the suggestion tradesmen use it for powertools etc) is hooked to the 12V system or the high voltage system. If it's hooked to the HV and the DC-DC converter remains the same, I can put another inverter off the 12V and have the ability to use high amperage appliances like an induction hob.

Been following for 2yrs now. Best of luck! I would have focused the video more on STRENGTHS what the common use cases would be. (I realize this is a Fast Lane Truck venue, though). 1) The BIGGEST selling point is for urbanites/HOA affected people to be ABLE to GARAGE this campervan for ready access! 2) weekend getaway, camping situation where you'd go mountain biking or kayaking where 99% of the time there's easy dirt road access at worst. 3) Versatile super-commuter / sales portable office vehicle. 4) Great for soccer moms or family members for tailgating parties / homebase where it would be ridiculous to use a big RV 5) Great for spouse to hang out while significant other does chores/shopping. 6) I'd get the non-accessorized version to be a stealth camper to camp where ordinances are being created in response to the housing crisis (ie. Silicon Valley!) or where I'd need to park on-street. 7) A possible homebase for certain handicapped patients to travel far away to doctor appointments, especially where the parking is restricted (like the very low-height UCSF garage)! I've been thinking how I'd modify this for a person in a wheelchair. I'd definitely use it for #3, #6, & #7 to conserve the use of my big 4x4 converted Pleasure Way Class B (which is terribly expensive & expensive to maintain to risk in everyday commuting traffic! And, it won't fit into the UCSF hospital parking garage!!

Yep, we had a VW Weekender with the opposite style of fold-flat seat/bed, and it was so uncomfortable for sleeping that we resorted to using a queen sized air mattress directly on top. That solution works pretty well as long as the interior doesn't get too cold and you have some means of controlling the body moisture against the vinyl mattress issue.

Came here via my yt recommended list. In spite of all of the negative comments, I can tell you that there is a large market for this campervan. There are many of us out here that just want a basic van to eat and sleep and explore and not all of the fancy gadgets and electronics found on the high-end Class Bs. Want to just explore America and be able to boondock and be inside a locked vehicle and not in a tent. A Hymer or Revel can run up to $120,000. In this video they said a basic setup is $50,000. My friends say that what I am looking for is a "motorized metal tent." This is it. Could even do without some of the gadgets on the Nissan. For the complainers...get a Luggable Loo for those bathroom needs. If it is raining, pull out the awning and use the attached shelf to cook outdoors. Mileage is also a plus. Being able to park on city streets and in garages is a plus. Perfect for one or two people. Perfect for the beach, outdoor conerts, Nascar, extra bedroom when too many visitors in your home. Easier to drive. Registers as a car. All is not perfect. I am glad that they did not cut out the scene where the van got stuck. I had the same problem off road once with my FWD RAV4. The minimum should be AWD. 4WD would drive up the price. That said, this is not meant to be a rock climbing, wash board road vehicle. Still good for graded dirt roads and level off the grid campsites and boondocks. No mention made if the shocks and suspension were upgraded to handle the weight and the dirt road vibration. Europe is the leader in these small campervans and have perfected the art of combining small size with convenience. The Recon Camper is on the right track. I have been looking at Class Bs, but still too expensive for me. This Recon van is perfect. Can't wait for it to come on the market. In fact, I am going to the Recon site now and see if they can outfit my Nissan now, with fewer gadgets.

You had me until you said it wasn't 4x4. Then come to find out it has a CVT. Great little rig though if you stay off the loose rocks and real steep hills. Otherwise, it's gonna be cut tires and over heated transmission. CVT's don't do well in an off road situaton. Too much wheel spin for my liking. I used to have a 1984 Toyota Tercel Hatchback 4-door. I used it for long trips, sleeping in it at rest stops and parking lots (spent 4 days at a parking lot in Vancouver, BC for the World's Fair in 1986...paid the $20 day parking fee!). I would often use it on logging roads and off-roads, amazing people in 4x4 trucks & dirt bikes that I got so far in on such bad road conditions. I slept 150 yards from a glacier on Mount Baker, cruised the dirt roads behind Mount Shasta (encountering parking lots of 4x4 hunters populated by herds of deer! LOL), exploring the Badlands of Arizona/New Mexico, venturing into the Northwest Territories in Canada, etc. After 186,000 miles, I traded it in to get my current Ford Ranger 3.0 Long Bed...which now has over 300,000 miles on it. -) It is amazing what you can do in an average car if you only have the experiences on how to drive off road, the patience to drive slowly, the tools on-hand and knowledge how to use them if you get stuck. I stress that anyone who plans to drive off-road for whatever reason...contact your local Off-Road Retailer who can point you to classes on Off-road Camping...the knowledge you gain will be used for a lifetime! -) TQQdles™

News flash, the big 4x4 lifted Econoline van or other to which you allude will be a total failure on dirt bike trails, so now what are you going to do? Alot of people comment on the whole not needing 4wd thing but to be honest this vehicle did MUCH better then I would have thought it could. I plan on buying a NV and having their conversion done. I've wanted a camper van for years but most everything out there is insanely priced. This van complete with conversion puts it within grasp of most people. The thing that appeals to me most is it checks all the boxes in a minimalistic way. Its the ultimate stealth camping rig. For people wanting something more off road worthy there is a company called quigly that does a 4WD conversion on the Nissan NV and its only 10k. If this guy can make it through the woes of starting a new company I think these camper van conversions they are doing will eventually catch on like wildfire. Theres no other camper van in NA that fills the niche this one fills, especially since VW wont bring a camper van to North America.

Bike Tall, any word on when it’ll be available in US?
@BikeTall5 жыл бұрын
Por que Bitcoin Actually, i recently contacted Nissan’s corporate office. Looks like there are NO plans to release it here. At least not anytime soon. Right now unfortunately, the current American Government & the oil industry that donate to them isn’t too friendly towards green tech. But the writing is on the wall. Electric vehicles are coming. It’s inevitable. And the car manufacturers know this. Tesla got the ball rolling, but others will follow. VW is making plans to convert their entire line to electric by 2030. Once the VW ID Buzz comes out in 2022, the flood gates will open. I think the tipping point will be 2025. By then, more and more affordable electric vehicles will hit the market. EVs with a range of 300-500 miles per quick charge will be the norm. It’s happening. Hopefully by then we will have a President who actually believes in climate change & green tech. ⚡️ 🚌 ⚡️

Rarely do you camp and go on road adventures in a team, it's usually alone. I feel that 4wd gives you enough capability to really get yourself in the deepest trouble, while alone. 2wd, with a winch, a traction board, maybe a locker if you really want to push, gives you enough access without getting you in deep if you have a problem. My gf and I are building an e350 V10 econoline van and the ground clearance of that is way more than this Nissan. Couple that with a good, tall tire that fits the wheel wells and as shown by the Nissan, you can do plenty. Get most of the way out, then have a dirt bike or mountain bike. I saw a couple with a sprinter van than went all dirt roads across states with 2wd. You just have to pick your line better vs 4wd allows you to be careless....until you break.

Buy the van and contact Quigley 4x4 they can do a conversion on them as well as most other similar vans on the market now...and they can still convert the old GM, Chrysler, and Ford full size vans to 4x4's too...not cheap but if you got the money to throw away at a conversion van in the first place you got the money to have it converted to 4x4. Course most RV's aren't 4WD either, unless you buy a travel trailer and use a 4WD pickup to pull it but they don't do well trying to drag them down rough trails, sure dirt/gravel roads are fine but taking them rock crawling isn't really going to happen.
@dchawk816 жыл бұрын
They should put electric motors on the rear wheels to maintain the flat floor.

quadpit The engine is underpowered for 4WD duties. They'd need at least the 2.5 from the Rogue to do so.

I'd love it if Nissan built this on a frontier platform, have solid axles front and rear, and more of a lift. This is really good though, I want one. I'd sleep on the top in summer time with the windows open, and sleep down low when it's cold and raining or snowy.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
Well the Nissan frontier doesn't have solid front axles its IFS. However, if you buy one of these vans, you can have Quigley 4x4 convert it to a 4x4 which gives you much heavier duty suspension and axle assemblies, although in these new vans you are still stuck with IFS due to the design. I'm sure with a lot of $$$ you could get them to install a solid front axle though.

The Dodge Promaster City is a far better van overall mechanically and is more spacious. No CVT, better mileage, etc. I suspect the Nissan was used because the interior kit is readily available in Europe for the Nissan.
@ReconCampers6 жыл бұрын
The US NV200 is 8" longer and nothing from the European NV200 can be used on the North American one. We designed every part from scratch on this build for the US NV200. We would have had to cut the bed from 42" wide to 36" wide on the Promaster City since it's wheel wells are too high to put a seat over them and not hit your head on the ceiling due to the fact it was designed as a passenger van with a dropped floor pan. All great vans the Nissan NV200 just had the best geometry for this style camper.
@JT2u8296 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. There are always trade-offs. Not sure I understand why your seat and other interior components couldn't be adapted to fit the Dodge. Cargo width in Nissan is 54.8" vs 60.4' in the Dodge. Between wheel wells Nissan is 48" vs 48.4 in the Dodge. I prefer the Dodge's mechanical underpinnings but favor the Nissan window beltline and exterior aesthetics .
@ReconCampers6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. It is not about the space between the wheel wells the the distance from the top of the wheel well to the ceiling. The NV200 has a very small, low wheel well so we could design the seat to go over top of it and use the entire 58" plus where the Ford Transit Connect and the Ram Promaster City both have high wheel wells so the seat would need to go between them if you wanted to sit on the seat and no hit the ceiling. Hope this makes sense. All three vans are great vehicles.

This demonstrates how a beefier wheel/tire package can make even a square metal box on tiny wheels look good. I was considering the Nissan, but the driver seat area is too narrow and my shoulder kept rubbing on some pillar. Went with the Promaster City and made the right choice for me. A year in and many mods later - still very happy.

OblioAndArrow indeed. We took the harder line to the right just to see if we could and backed off once. Almost decided to take the easier line to the left but Overlanding is about adventure and team work and this seemed like a great spot to really push it. Great idea. Easy to take out to the National Forest up logging roads or whatever. Plus it's dual purpose. One thing, the towing capacity of the NV200 is listed as N/A. They make hitches, but would it even tow a small trailer with a couple of dirt bikes?
